Sports Desk - 16 January
Winter finally seems to have arrived this weekend, with frost on the ground.
Our hockey girls headed indoors for the National Finals in Worcester. The U16s played strongly to head their group with wins over Egglescliffe (5-1), Malvern (6-0) and Sir William Borlase (3-0), and a draw against last year's champions Ipswich (2-2). Unfortunately they were shaded 1-0 in the semi-final by Bromsgrove, who in turn were well beaten in the final by a very strong Coopers' Co & Coborn. Special mentions go to Meg Lewis Williams, Fliss McCarthy, Katya Slate and Ffion Thompson. The U18s had a tougher time, fighting hard but going down to Collyer's (0-4), Coopers' Co (1-3) and Repton (2-4), and beating Cheltenham (2-1).
In even chillier climes in Bratislava, Slovakia, George Bailey and Craig Worman continued their excellent form with strong performances at the Cadet (U17) World Cup. George finished as the highest ranked Brit placing 37th in the foil to almost certainly secure his place for the World Championships, and Craig finished 45th in the epee in his first international representation.
Also indoors, our trampolinists enjoyed significant success, with the U15 Boys Elite team (Harry Close, Calum Eley, Asher Roberts and Yuu Kurihara) winning the Southern Zonal Championships to qualify to the National Finals in March. Harriet Dixon placed 4th individually in the U19 Girls Novice, to miss qualification by just one place, and Seb Baxter-Allen was 7th in the U19 Boys Novice. And our U14 and U15 basketball teams won all 6 of their matches at the Somerset League Tournament, with standout performances from Noah Tomlin, Marcus Barker and Harry Griffiths. Devraj Harilela, Fernando Lecuona, Josh Avent, and John Wildgoose made their debuts for Millfield basketball and all played with good spirit and learnt a lot.
Braving the outdoors earlier in the week, our Cross Country runners put in excellent performances in the Mendip Championships: Alice Hannan (Junior Girls), Amy Cooper (Intermediate Girls), Charlie Martin (Intermediate Boys), Kitty Bartlett (Senior Girls), and Zac Stephenson and Guy Marshman (Senior Boys) leading the way with podium finishes, and a total of 16 Millfieldians being selected for the Somerset final.
Results from these and all other fixtures can be found on the Millfield website.
