About Millfield Sport News
Sports Desk - 23 January
2012 has started with early Olympic success for Millfield, with Jazmin Sawyers racing to a silver medal in bobsleigh at the Winter Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. In the men's event, OMs Olly Biddulph and James Lelliot finished 5th, representing GB in what was an all-Millfield sled (5th in the world from one school!). These are incredible results considering that none of them had even considered bobsleigh 16 months previously, and testament to the efforts of Mrs Richard Smith and Gary Jennings in enabling their uptake and training.
Further international success was achieved in squash, with Roee Avraham and Mykhaylo Sorochev placing 3rd and 5th in the Czech Junior Open in Prague. The event is part of the European Super Series and reflects Roee's standing in the European top 10. Vivan Sachdev also enjoyed his first win in a Super Series event and ultimately placed 28th.
And our football and rugby players will pick up international experience this week, with James Golby and Dominic Webb due to play for ESFA U18s on Saturday, and Tom Bellak and James Bloxham having debuted for England U19 rugby against Wales in Newport last night. England went down 11-8 in front a healthy and excited crowd.
Closer to home, boys hockey experienced a mixed day, winning 1 and drawing 2 of their 6 fixtures with Dauntsey's. Our netballers fared better, winning against King's Taunton at all ages and splitting results against West Buckland. And the 1st XV rugby team signed off their season with an impressive 50-7 win over Crawshays, including debuts for Sam Gregson, Ed Lovell and Ed Poynter.
In the South West Schools Biathlon Championships, there were medals for Danielle Morgan, Venetia Manuel, Thomas Bielich, Alex Allen and Amy Cooper, with Toby Griffiths and James Rustom joining Alex to win the Y10 boys team event. The biathlon was just part of a busy and successful weekend for Amy, who also won the Somerset Cross Country Championships, handily beating the current English Schools champion. Alongside Amy there were strong runs from Alice Hannan, Tom Parkinson, Charlie Martin, Zach Stephenson, Sam Bedford and Kitty Bartlett to earn selection for Somerset for the SW Regional Final. And finally our swimmers continued their impressive form at the Exeter Meet in Cardiff, posting an impressive PB rate of 73%, including a fantastic effort from Lizzie Barber in the 200m freestyle, clocking 2:30.87 min to break her PB by 10 sec!
