About Millfield Sport News

Sports Desk - 30 January

While relatively quiet on campus, our sports teams were busy around the country with block fixtures in Boys Hockey against King's Taunton, Girls Hockey against Cheltenham Ladies, netball in the Regional Championships, and Rugby 7s at their first tournament of the year at Wellington.

The Boys Hockey outweighed King's 6-2 across the 8 fixtures, with a particularly strong 5-1 win at U16s. And the Girls triumphed 3-1 in their block against Cheltenham Ladies, featuring a 6-1 win at 1st XI. The netballers tried valiantly, placing 4th in the Region at 1st VII and 5th at U14, though unfortunately falling short of progressing to Nationals. And the Rugby U16s were runners-up in their first 7s outing at Wellington.

Our fencers picked up more medals at the South West Championships, this time with Harriet Dixon, Venetia Manuel, Roo Whelan, Will Woodley and Craig Worman all reaching the podium. And in the Southern Zonal Championships, our swimmers took every available relay gold across all age groups! There were a number of notable performances including Cameron Kurle stepping up from Year 10 to the Senior Boys 4x200m freestyle relay team and aiding them to victory.

On a crisp morning in Henley, in the company of OM and triple Olympian Sarah Winckless, we took perhaps the decisive step in Millfield's embarkation on rowing: taking ownership of our first eight-boat. Merlin Rotermund, Jack Robertson-Macleod, Griff Williams, James Bloxham, Max Hutchinson, Rory Gibbs, David Shepperd and Dylan O'Kelly-Lynch all enjoyed a paddle on the famous stretch of the Thames, before lunching at the legendary Leander Club.

This mixture of sport, culture and education has resonated through other sporting activities this week, with Dom Hudson and Harry Turner refereeing their junior peers in basketball; Henry Smout, Ricard Vicario, Sezno Benson and Nnamdi Ikeazor progressing with football refereeing qualifications as their MAP; the U15 Rugby Boys enjoying a coaching clinic from World Cup-winning former Australia coach Bob Dwyer; and our squash teams prepare again to host Oxford University for training and supper as the Varsity Match looms.
