Adrian E. White CBE. Chairman of the Governors

Father of five Millfield pupils. Founder and Chairman of Biwater plc. BBC Governor since 1995. Chairman of Epsom Health Care Trust from 1992 – 1999. Governor of Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for the Disabled since 1990. Chartered Engineer and Founder of British Water. Dedicated 50 mile charity walker since a teenager – since gone to seed but supermanaged by wife, Gill(ian), for the last 29 years. Intrepid entrepreneur, stubborn inventor and committed promoter of Millfield as the Best School in the World.

Bishop Paul Barber

Bishop Paul Barber is an Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Previously he was Archdeacon of Surrey and then, in 1989, became the first Bishop of Brixworth in the Diocese of Peterborough, in which he served for thirteen years. During that time he was the Archbishop’s adviser to the H.M.C. and Chairman of the School Chaplains’ Conference. He also chaired the Church of England Board of Mission’s Rural Affairs Committee, and the Northamptonshire Rural Housing Association. Educated at Sherborne, St John’s College Cambridge, and Wells Theological College. Bishop Paul is married to Pat, a former teacher. They have four children, all long grown up, and six grandchildren. He lists his interests as reading, sport and learning to pray better.

Robert Clark (1960-65; Etonhurst)

Lucky enough to be educated at Millfield having failed both Eleven Plus and Common Entrance. Played First XI cricket from 1962-65 Captain in 1965. After Millfield entered Guy’s Hospital Dental School, University of London, graduating with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree. A Ph.D. at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences and a Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow followed while holding clinical posts at Guy’s Hospital and the Royal Dental Hospital.

From 1980-1994 was Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry in the University of Hong Kong, and also held appointments as visiting professor at Sun Yat Sen Medical University and Jinan University, Guangzhou, P.R.China. He was the Founding Secretary of the Hong Kong College of Dental Surgeons, a constituent College of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, which was set up to take over the role of the British Royal Colleges after the hand-over of Hong Kong to China in 1997.

Returned to UK in 1995 and is now Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry at the King’s College London Dental Institute. He was President of the British Society for the Study of Prosthetic Dentistry, 2001-2002 and has been a Committee member of the Old Millfieldian Society since 1996, Chairman 2002-5 and since 2006.

Married to Kathy, one son William (1999-2004; Skinner).

Mrs Clare Cripps (nee Swindall) (1965-68; Elmsett & Ashcott)

Read Anthropology at University College London. Qualified professionally, Clare pursued her initial career in personnel management in the City. She then moved to Imperial College where she ran the residence office before instigating their initial on-line alumnus database. Following a move to Chichester with the family in 1994, Clare joined West Sussex County Council where she is currently a senior manager heading up the Registration Service for ‘hatches, matches and despatches’.

Married to Martin, Professor of Information Engineering. They have a daughter, Stephanie, who is an art historian and a son Andrew, an electrical engineer. She shares a love of sailing with her husband, enjoys a keen interest in art and is a passionate gardener.

Mrs Judith Derbyshire (nee Clark) (1968-73; Day)

Following Millfield, went to York University, then became a solicitor working in private practice in Bristol.

Since 1991 Company Secretary at Clarks Shoes in Street. Married with two boys who both went to Millfield.

Jonty Driver

Master of Wellington College from 1989-2000, now a full-time writer and occasional consultant to schools. Educated at the University of Cape Town, and Trinity College, Oxford. Elected President of the National Union of South African Students but in 1964 was locked up in solitary confinement by the South African security police for his outspoken opposition to apartheid and became stateless and a prohibited immigrant in South Africa for more than twenty years. He taught at Sevenoaks School (becoming Housemaster of the International Sixth Form Centre), Director of Sixth Form Studies at Matthew Humberstone Comprehensive School in Cleethorpes, as well as Principal of Island School, Hong Kong. In 1983 he became Headmaster of Berkhamsted School, in Hertfordshire.

He has published four novels and six books of poems. He writes for various periodicals, including the Times Literary Supplement and the Daily Telegraph, is working on a novel, a Selected Poems, and autobiographical essays. When forty, he took up long-distance running, and has run, slowly, eight marathons and many more half-marathons.

Gareth O. Edwards CBE. (1964-66: Millfield)

Wales and British Lions rugby player. Currently involved with several companies in South Wales, including one with Nick Williams (1965-66, Walton). Local Director of Coutts Bank, Cardiff. Also public speaking and television commentary. Hobbies include golf (seven handicap) and fishing (once held British pike record – 45 Ibs 6 oz). Married to Maureen. Children: Owen (1990-92; Orchards) and Rhys (1990-94; Orchards).

Richard M. Mawditt OBE

Director of the International Centre of Higher Education Management, University of Bath. UNESCO Chair in Higher Education Management. Chairman of Bath (Rugby) Football Club Trustees Limited, Director of Millfield Awards Foundation, Trustee, Holbume Museum of Menstrie and Huntington Heritage Centre (Bath) Limited. Avon Scout Commissioner from 1974 – 1986. Trustee, The Royal Literary and Scientific Association, 1990 – 1995. Non-Executive Director of the Bath Royal United Trust, 1990 – 1996 and Consultant to the DfEE on the Parents’ Charter in 1991. Executive Board Director for the European Youth Olympic Games, 1993 – 1995. Executive Board Member, Commonwealth Educational Council from 1998. Married with three children.

Stephen R. Morley Secetary and Clerk to Governors

Read law at Birmingham University before being admitted as a solicitor in 1979. Presently a partner with a local legal practice. Director of former Somerset Training and Enterprise Council (1997-2001) and Director/Company Secretary of Bridgwater Arts Centre (1996-2001). A former National Youth Theatre player, retains an active passion for music and the theatre. Married with three teenage children.

Atul Patel (1962-67; Shapwick)

A Fiji Islander and Old Millfieldian with a background in international merchant and investment banking. Also an ex-Millfield Parent with two children, Manu (1989-94; Millfield) and Leela (1992-97; Acacia).

Lived and worked in London, Hong Kong, Jeddah and currently, in Dubai. A committed advocate of the pursuit of excellence in education and pastoral care.

Brian Rigby CBE

From April 2000 until his retirement, he was the Deputy Chief Executive of the Office of Government Commerce, and prior to that Director of the Procurement Group in HM Treasury. Formerly, he held several senior business management roles in the Telecommunications field, working for Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe, British Telecom PLC and Post Office Telecommunications. He began his career working for the Department of Transport. His first degree was in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Hertford College, Oxford University, followed by an MSc in Finance and Accounting at the London School of Economics. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply and a Visiting Fellow at Warwick Business School. He is married with one son, Thomas, and lives in Shipton under Wychwood.

He has recently been appointed to the Board of Partnerships for Schools by the Secretary of State.

David W. A. Rosser

Served the nation for three years in the Royal Army Educational Corps before Cambridge University; rugby blues in 1962-63-64,captain in 1964; capped for England in 1965 and 1966. Taught at Dulwich College and Sherborne School before joining Millfield in 1971. Coached the 1st XV for 25 years, 13 as Master in Charge. Appointed Senior Master in 1986 subsequently translating to Deputy Head in 1990, in which capacity enjoyed nine absorbing years with Christopher Martin and Peter Johnson. Married with two children, Meriel and Alan, who went through Edgarley Hall (as it then was) and Millfield.

Anabel Sexton (nee Lewis) (1980-87; Lower Edgarley and Oaklands)

Educated at Edgarley Hall and then Millfield, where she obtained International Honours for Squash. A career in sports marketing and management followed, during which time she ran her own Sports PR company before selling it to take on the role of European Brand Communications Director at TaylorMade adidas Golf. In 2002 Anabel put her career on hold to bring up her two children, Freddie and Gabriella. Living in Hampshire with her husband and children, Anabel is an active golfer, tennis and polo player.

Roger Trafford

Read Modern history at Hertford College, Oxford and taught for three years in Boston, Massachusetts, and then at St Paul’s Prep where he was Head of English and a Housemaster and spent much of his time on various games fields. He then began twenty-nine years as a Prep School Headmaster which took him to King’s, Taunton, Clifton and the Dragon School, Oxford. He has been Chairman of IAPS, Chairman of ISIS and until recently was Deputy Chairman of the Independent Schools Council, the governing body of independent schools. Since he retired in 2002, he has worked for the Asquith Court group of schools as an educational consultant. He has acted as a headhunter for a number of schools seeking a new Head and is a Governor of three Prep schools and four Senior schools. He is married to a teacher and museum educationalist and they have two boys, a lawyer and a teacher.
