11@Millfield

The 11@Millfield English Language course equips students with the ability to effectively articulate thoughts, emotions, and imagination through both spoken and written communication. They will learn to understand implicit and explicit meanings, uncover authorial intentions, and analyse texts with a critical eye.

Through mastery of a comprehensive range of devices and techniques, students will gain the skills needed to become confident and compelling communicators in a fast-changing world. They will take a globally recognised IGCSE English Language qualification in the summer term.

The 11@Millfield Mathematics course is designed to develop mathematical fluency, deepen understanding of concepts and methods, as well as hone problem-solving skills.  The course will engage students by covering key foundational content on number, algebra, geometry and statistics.  Students will be challenged to develop models of real-life situations and interpret and communicate mathematical information.

Students will take a globally recognised IGCSE Mathematics qualification in the summer term. We work with students to develop a deep understanding of the topics covered so that necessary foundations are in place for those wishing to study mathematics, or a mathematical subject, in the sixth form and beyond.

Dive into learning Chinese! A language which has shown to improve handwriting, concentration, logic, and numeracy! Through learning the most basic and ancient Chinese symbols/characters, which are essentially drawings of the natural world, you will glimpse a vivid, living world from thousands of years ago.

Students journey includes interactive learning tasks in class, classical poetry, music and calligraphy using a soft paintbrush and a magical scroll.  There is also a two-day Chinese Food Festival where students make and taste authentic Chinese foods, and celebrating three main traditional festivals, such as tasting festive foods, making lanterns, racing paper dragon boats, and visiting London for a day during the Chinese New Year period.

Possibilities exist to take the internationally recognised YCT (Youth Chinese Test) certificate, which has four levels. An achievable YCT level 3 is equivalent to CEFR A1.

We also offer German, French and Spanish as an option for those students who have completed at least three years study in that language.  Additional English support is also possible within this block, if appropriate.

Students who are already fluent in Chinese may be offered a more advanced Chinese language course, depending upon demand.

The 11@Millfield Science course will help students understand how the world around them works, from tiny atoms to the vastness of space. In addition to this, students will learn essential problem-solving and analytical skills which will be useful in everyday life plus future careers, all in a fun and stimulating learning environment.

Science is the foundation for many exciting fields of study, opening doors to a wide range of opportunities. Plus, it helps students make informed choices about important issues like health, energy, and the environment.

The 11@Millfield Humanities course is a dynamic interdisciplinary course that will unlock some of the hidden aspects of Millfield’s surroundings: Glastonbury, the wild marshlands known as The Levels, and the unique context of Somerset. A rigorous academic blend of Geography, History, and Economics will encourage students to enhance their understandings of humanities disciplines (and therefore offer them foundations for A Levels), but it will also allow students to explore narratives of people and landscape that have created the present. The course will contain exciting and relevant field trips, energising the mind and enhancing a love of learning within and beyond the classroom.

The 11@Millfield Computing course is a forward-thinking programme that empowers students to tackle challenges through hands-on projects in Artificial Intelligence, programming, data analytics, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. Collaborate with industry professionals and engage in problem-solving activities that mirror the demands of the modern workforce.

Combining creativity, critical thinking, and cutting-edge knowledge, this is a course unlike any other. Demonstrating Millfield’s commitment to curiosity and disruption, this programme will ensure students become skilled innovators ready to challenge the status quo and help shape the world of tomorrow.

The 11@Millfield Research Project is a project-based course about curiosity and enquiry. Students will develop their own ideas, whether in an analytical or creative form, and turn them into a reality. They will have the opportunity to explore new areas of personal interest that may not normally form part of a formal curriculum or to explore areas they have touched on in their studies in more depth.

We have developed a course that allows students to have as much freedom and agency as possible within in a well-structured programme that delivers the key skills needed for a piece of academic or creative research. Students will benefit from the support and guidance of expert teachers and researchers and complete a globally recognised HPQ (Higher Project Qualification).

The 11@Millfield Character Education and Life Skills programme includes developing stress coping techniques, revisions skills and study skills in order to support students during this busy academic year. Students will also study personal behaviours and professional behaviours, CV writing, work experience opportunities, citizenship and the impact of financial decisions and some introductory work on the economy. They will engage deeply with what it means to make and break relationships and how to develop trust.  The course also covers how the UK government and voting works, as well as understanding prejudice, racism and discrimination in society.

11@ Millfield students will have full access to the entire range of activities and opportunities available at Millfield, read our Millfield Diploma Brochure.  They will be able to complete the Year 10-11 Millfield Diploma, with bespoke support and guidance from their Group Tutor, completing the qualification in a single year.

11@Millfield students will have full access to the Futures Department who work with students to provide tailored guidance and support to all students exploring their sixth form and post-Millfield pathways. This will entail events, trips, presentations and experiences that will allow students to explore possibilities. The pastoral and Futures team will work with students 1:1 to ensure we address the needs of each student.
