'Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: 90 Years of Jazz and Surrealism'

Eileen Agar 'Sunburst' Image Courtesy of the Reiff Collection of British Art
25 February - 21 March 2026
This spring, the Atkinson Gallery will host a fascinating exhibition 'From the Devil to the Deep Blue Sea: 90 Years of Jazz and Surrealism'. The exhibition of paintings from the Reiff Collection will explore the Surrealist movement in British painting particularly the intersection of the visual and the musical. Some other themes that will be represented are improvisation and automatism, the human body and sleep and dreamscapes. In the foyer, there will also be creative responses to the exhibition by Millfield students. This is a very special opportunity to see some remarkable and stimulating paintings and to discover more about the significant impact of Surrealism on the British art world.
