Upper Sixth - Joined in Year 9

I originally joined Millfield to pursue athletics, however I discovered a talent in cycling. I love how it’s a niche sport which makes it interesting, as you don't just have to focus on yourself but on your bike too. After joining Millfield’s cycling team, I began track cycling training with the Millfield Triathlon team which has led to being able to work with British Cycling. All the coaches have been so supportive and motivating, as they give you goals to aim for in the specialist gym sessions. Old Millfieldian Milly Tanner motivates me to succeed, as she experienced what I am currently, and has achieved so much to get onto Great Britain’s cycling team. I will continue on the British Cycling talent pathway to develop my skills and race tactics for sprint cycling.

One of the subjects I chose to study at A level is physical education. As I’m so involved with my sport, I thought it would be beneficial to have an insight as to what affects my body in certain ways and how to exceed my full potential. I was also intrigued as to how my role models in the sporting world got to where they are today. Millfield also gave me the option to take media studies for A level which I didn’t even consider before coming to the school. Media Studies as a subject has given me so much inspiration and helped me develop my creativity so much that I now want to study international media and communications at university. Balancing my sport and academics at Millfield has helped me to realise that it is possible to pursue high level sport alongside my studies.

Being a boarder is a very full-on experience but one I would never change. I’ve been boarding at Millfield since Year 9 and the friendships I've developed are immense and will stay with me for life. You develop a family with the other boarders, and as your friends in house are going through the same as you, it helps tremendously. The atmosphere is so welcoming and caring, so I have really enjoyed being a House Prefect in addition to helping mentor Year 9 students. Everyone embraces all the different cultures at the school and there is a great support system around you 24/7. The experience has helped me become more independent and organised which has given me a head start into the future.
