The Careers and Higher Education Department, now rebranded as the Futures Department, supports all senior students for guidance on post-Millfield pathways.

The department consists of: Mr Jono Santry (Head of Futures), Mrs Ruth Landrigan (Deputy Head of Futures – Years 8-11), Dr Lisa Hall (Assistant Head of Futures - Sixth Form), Mrs Gabrielle Owen (Futures Office Manager and SAT Test Coordinator), Mrs Heather Jackson (SAT Education Coordinator), Dr Beatrice Priest (Head of Academic Culture and Tutor in Charge of Oxbridge support) and Ms Jancis Weal (Tutor in charge of Medicine/Dentistry/Veterinary applications).

We use the UNIFROG careers and future pathways online platform for all Year 9-Upper Sixth students. Here students can explore opportunities and prepare documentation for all future pathways and transitions. In September all parents are also given a password to log in to the parent view of Unifrog.

We host many universities, colleges, training providers and employers each year for Millfield's annual Futures Fair as well as welcoming small group and individual institutions throughout the year. All students are encouraged to regularly engage in the in-house events hosted by Millfield as well as being encouraged to log-on to regular virtual events advertised on a weekly basis on UNIFROG, in the Library and on the school’s intranet.

All Lower Sixth students will attend two days off curriculum in January where they will have the opportunity to either attend a visit to a UK university, or a day of activities for USA & Canada applications or an Alternative Pathways activity day. They will also have the opportunity to talk to OMs at the annual OM Futures Convention held at Millfield, where OMs from different industries will present their career stories. They will all also attend the UCAS Convention in Exeter in March, where around 150 UK HE institutions, Military, Gap Year and Apprenticeship opportunities are represented. Also in March all Lower Sixth will attend the Futures Fair.

Those looking to apply to Oxbridge are prepared for the specific requirements of Oxbridge entrance in small seminar groups, overseen by Dr Beatrice Priest, Head of Academic Culture. Those looking to apply to the USA and Canada are supported by Dr Hall and those specifically looking for Sports Scholarships in the USA will often also engage the services of private consultants and agencies. An annual Sports Forum for UK and USA sporting pathways is offered each year in September for students and families to explore opportunities. Those searching for apprenticeship, military or alternative local and global opportunities are also supported through the Futures department.

We are also very fortunate to have the Cadets (CCF) office here at Millfield and those students wishing to apply to the military services can seek advice from the CCF as well as request interview practice for military applications.  We also engage the services of external careers provision from FutureSmart and Investin.

A full programme of tutoring is also given to students applying to prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT). The SAT is used for many USA applications and also for some EU and global applications such as; IE in Spain, Bocconi in Italy & NUS in Singapore. Millfield is one of only a few schools in the UK registered as a SAT Centre.

All Sixth Form students will be encouraged to attend one-one meetings with a designated member of the Futures Team as well as being regularly guided in their options by their Group Tutors and Houseparents.

Students in Sixth Form can arrange meetings with the Futures Team by contacting the Futures Office Manager on futures@millfieldschool.com All students are very welcome to come to the Futures office at anytime to use the resources here or to simply work on applications in the quiet spaces offered in the centre. The Futures centre is situated above the Meyer Theatre on the first floor of the maths block.
