In Conversation with Millfield Prep Girl Boarders

In the latest episode of The Millfield Way podcast, we caught up with four girl boarders at Millfield Prep School (MPS).

Cecily, Bel and Martha in Year 8, and Daphne in Year 5, discussed their experiences of boarding at MPS.

Millfield Prep currently has around 125 boarders and offers both flexi and full-time options. There are two girls boarding houses and two boys boarding houses on campus, equipped with cosy dorms, kitchens for snacks, common rooms and outdoor amenities.

The four pupils we spoke with are all first-time boarders. In the podcast episode, the pupils discussed their boarding experiences, challenges and interests they have discovered since joining Millfield Prep.

The pupils had a variety of backgrounds, with two girls’ parents living abroad and one pupil having several family members onsite. Several of the girls were in the recent production of High School Musical and are excelling in music, drama and sports.

Why did you decide on Millfield Prep?

Cecily: I was offered a double scholarship here. I have a scholarship in Sports and Drama.

Bel: The reason I came was because my aunt, uncle, brother and cousins came here, so I feel like all my family has been through the Prep and Senior schools.

Martha: I chose Millfield because of the swimming. It’s my favourite and best sport. In Year 5, my mum and I were watching the British Championships on TV and she saw someone from Millfield swimming. She said it was a good school for swimming and since then it has been my dream school. I was so excited to finally come when I joined in Year 7.

Daphne: I listened to lots of audiobooks, like Malorie Towers, about boarding schools and it was always my dream to come to one. We looked at loads but none of them felt quite like Millfield.

What are your current interests, and have you discovered any new ones since joining the school?

Cecily: My main sport is netball, I’ve been doing it since Year 3 and really enjoy it. We’ve recently had a tournament that we came second in. Another sport I’ve discovered here that I like and am good at is fencing, on Thursday morning I have an early morning fencing club and on Sunday I have a tournament which I’m excited for.

Bel: Before I came to Millfield, I liked sports but wasn’t the sportiest person but I’ve definitely picked up a lot more sports. I like all sports but my favourite which I discovered here is Lazer Run, I do that on a Thursday morning. You have a gun and have to hit the target and get five green lights. You run around campus and shoot until you get five green lights. I find it really fun and I’m quite good at the shooting part.

Martha: Before I came to Millfield Prep, the only sport I did was swimming because I love it so much and came here for the swimming. I’ve now discovered I’m good at playing hockey, I’m good in the goal and have good coordination with my feet. Coming to Millfield Prep, I’ve discovered a lot more than I would have at my previous school so I’m really happy that I came here and tried out new things.

Daphne: I’ve found lots of sports that I love doing. I also do fencing like Cecily and it’s been really interesting.
