OM Harry Barton - Studying in the States
It was a pleasure catching up with OM Harry Barton (2015*-2017; Great), who shared some fantastic insights into life after Millfield. Harry is currently studying Business and Finance at the University of Tennessee, where he successfully balances his academic pursuits with competing as a student-athlete in Track and Field.
Tell us a bit about what you’re up to at the moment
I’ve just finished the US collegiate track and field season. I made it to the semi-finals at nationals, which was a great experience. While our team had hoped for a better overall performance, it’s something we’ll build on going forward. I’m now focused on training for the upcoming European Junior Trials.
What’s your favourite thing about your school and where you are studying?
There are two things that stand out. First, Knoxville itself where the school is located, it is generally just such a fun place to live. And second, would be going to the different sporting events as they have amazing facilities including a huge arena that seats over 100,000 people.
What has been the highlight of your time in the US so far?
Probably meeting loads of new people. I like being around people for the most part and meeting lots of new and like-minded people has been a lot of fun.
What would your top tip be for current students considering a US university?
If you’re thinking about it, go for it! Even if you only spend a year out there, it’s absolutely worth the experience.
My main piece of advice would be to do thorough research into the universities you’re considering. Make sure they’re the right fit for you, some might be in very remote areas or have a strong religious affiliation, and that may or may not align with what you’re looking for. The more you know going in, the better your experience will be.
How has Millfield shaped your journey?
When I joined in Year 7, I was given the chance to try so many different things. I originally came to Millfield as a swimmer, but over time my focus became football, and I ended up playing for the first team right up until I left in Upper Sixth. Along the way, I also had the opportunity to play rugby, cricket, hockey, cross country, and more. The coaches here helped shape me as an athlete which I am grateful for, and I am still in contact with many of them.
The Futures team were also a huge help. They supported me through the university application process and helped connect me with agents, which made a real difference when applying to US universities.
What is your goal for after university?
I have one more year, possibly two if the opportunity arises, but the goal is to go pro!
Harry’s sister, Maddie, is also studying in the states, at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York. A fashion school, where she is mostly enjoying the marketing element of it. Maddie is currently in her placement year and is working in London as an intern with Jellycat.
It’s inspiring to see OMs taking their Millfield foundations across the Atlantic, embracing life in the States and making the most of every opportunity along the way. Well done to both – we’re excited to see where your journeys lead next.
