Where Olympians Are Made: Millfield’s 50m Performance Pool
At the heart of the campus is Millfield’s 50-metre Olympics size swimming pool, built to FINA standards and widely regarded as one of the most impressive school swimming facilities in the country. The pool was selected as a training base for athletes preparing for the 2024 Olympic Games, underlining its elite status. For aspiring swimmers, training in an Olympic standard environment foster both technical excellence and competitive confidence. Millfield swimming has produced 29 Olympians in its short history and has had a swimmer at every Olympics since 1968 including champions like Duncan Goodhew and Mark Foster, and most recently the incredible James Guy.

A Stage Fit for Legends: The Sir Gareth Edwards Pitch
The Sir Gareth Edwards Pitch, named in honour of legendary Welsh rugby player Gareth Edwards, stands as the school’s showcase rugby ground and a tribute to its proud rugby heritage. It continues to host championship level fixtures and reflects Millfield’s strong tradition of international representation. Old Millfieldians have gone on to play at the highest level, including Chris Robshaw, Mako Vunipola, Jonathan Joseph, Huw Jones, and Adam Hastings.

Premier-Level Football: 11 Pitches, One Professional Pathway
Football is the school’s largest participation sport, with over 300 students involved. This success is supported by exceptional facilities, including 11 pitches and a First Team Pitch built to Premier League Category Two equivalent standard. These facilities help sustain Millfield’s strong track record of guiding players into the professional game. Recent leavers have secured contracts with Premier League and Women’s Super League clubs, while many others progress to NCAA D1, D2 and D3 programmes in the United States, as well as leading Russell Group universities.


A £2.6 Million Investment in Sporting Excellence
Launched in 2020, the Indoor Golf and Cricket Centres represent a 2.6 million pound investment in world leading technology. Equipped with advanced motion tracking and simulation software, the centres place Millfield at the forefront of school and university sport.

The golf programme extends beyond the indoor centre. Onsite outdoor facilities include two putting greens, a nine-hole pitch and putt course, a specialist short game area, and a 350 yard driving range, providing golfers with a comprehensive performance environment.
For cricket, the indoor facility enables year round training at all times of day, supporting an already thriving programme of 370 players, including 80 girls. Features include PitchVision technology across three lanes, a 4G fielding area, three adaptable bowling and batting surfaces, five nets, and an expansive 22 metre run up facilities already used by professionals from Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.

Elite 400m Athletics Track and Field Arena
Millfield’s 400 metre athletics track provides elite level training across all 20 athletics disciplines. Recently resurfaced as a Level Two facility and equipped with 18 metre, 200 lux LED floodlights, the track is designed to host regional and national schools’ championships, as well as elite pole vault competitions. It is not simply a training ground, but a competition ready arena preparing athletes for the sport’s biggest stages.
Riding at the Highest Standard: Millfield’s BHS-Approved Equestrian Centre
Equestrian sport is equally impressive. The Indoor Riding Arena spans 30,300 square feet and can be divided into two expansive training areas. Diffused natural daylight, combined with a modern LED lighting system, ensures optimal riding conditions year round. The centre also features an outdoor arena and stabling for 53 horses, allowing riders to train in a professional standard environment throughout the year. As a BHS Approved Livery Yard, and one of the few British schools with fully integrated on campus equestrian facilities, Millfield offers an exceptional setting for aspiring riders.

Fast, Fearless, Millfield Hockey
Hockey is another sport in which Millfield excels. The school boasts three water based FIH certified pitches, providing players with outstanding training conditions. Athletes are supported by three specialist coaches alongside 20 dedicated academic staff. The quality of provision has helped numerous Old Millfieldians represent their countries at major international competitions.

World-Class Walls, World-Class Players
Squash at Millfield is also strong, with six newly refurbished courts. the squash programme caters to all levels, with daily coaching, international competitions, and, for elite players, a six-day-a-week training schedule. Among the distinguished alumni are Angus Gillams, who broke into the world’s top 70 in his second year as a professional; Peter Marshall, former British and European Number 1 and World Number 2; Mohamed El Shorbagy, former World Number 1; and Marwan El Shorbagy, former World Number 3.

All-Weather Excellence: The Millfield Tennis Academy
Millfield’s Tennis Academy is fully equipped to meet the demands of students of any age and ability. The Tennis centre consists of three indoor Courts with spectator balcony seating, plus additional outdoor courts, allowing students to train all year round.

The only school in the UK to offer training in all three fencing weapons
Millfield is proud to be the only school in the UK to offer training in all three fencing weapons to boys and girls at the highest levels. Training takes place in a dedicated nine-piste fencing salle equipped with wall-mounted electric scoring boxes. This facility supports students of all abilities and offers an environment where athletes can improve and pursue there fencing ambitions.
