A panel of Millfield rugby legends, including Sir Gareth Edwards, join our latest online event

On Wednesday evening, we were excited to host our latest online event, Millfield 80’s Rugby Reunion. We welcomed a fantastic panel of OM guest speakers hosted by John Mallett (1983-1988; Orchards), who is currently the Director of Rugby at Millfield: Sir Gareth Edwards (1964-1966; Millfield), Andrew Higginson (1961-1965; Shapwick), Rod Speed (1964-1966; Day), and former Millfield teacher and rugby coach, David Rosser. It was wonderful to hear all their rugby memories and stories.

The panellists spoke about the current game, OMs who are currently playing professional rugby, and The Sir Gareth Edwards Scholarship Fund here at Millfield.

The first guest to speak was Sir Gareth. He shared the importance of his Millfield education, the impact it has had on his family, and discussed his own experience of joining Millfield and playing rugby. It was lovely to hear him say that he would never forget his “wonderful two years at Millfield School!”

We then heard John speak about OMs who have gone on to huge success playing rugby, including Callum Sheedy (2012-2014; Shapwick), who is currently representing Wales in the Six Nations, and Ewan Richards (2018-2020; Mill), who was signed for Bath and made his debut 2 weeks ago.

There is also currently an OM in each of the Home Nations squads in the Six Nations!

We also loved hearing Andrew and Rod, both of whom played in the same team as Sir Gareth at Millfield, speak about being such a big part of Millfield rugby over the years, and the generosity of the donors who have contributed to The Sir Gareth Edwards Scholarship Fund.

David Rosser also shared with us his fond memories from coaching talented rugby players at Millfield and the amazing opportunities he saw students benefit from.

All of the guest speakers were excited to speak about The Sir Gareth Edwards Scholarship Fund. John spoke about the first Sir Gareth Edwards Scholar, who started at Millfield in September and has shown great potential. Nicola Pender, Head of Alumni and Foundation, shared that the aim is to build the fund so that we can offer the life changing opportunity of a Millfield education to many more talented rugby players.
