Last week, it was amazing to see so many OMs competing at the British Swimming Selection Trials for the Tokyo Olympics this summer. The OMs who participated were James Guy (2008-2009; MPS/2009-2014; Great), Kieran Bird (2016-2018; Holmcroft), Brodie Williams (2013-2017; Great), Jessica Podger (2018-2020; Martins), Jakob Goodman (2015-2019; Orchards), Rachel Anderson (2015-2020; The Lakes), Cameron Kurle (2008-2010; MPS/2010-2016; Great), William Mitchell (2015-2020; Orchards) and Samuel Irvine (2014-2016; Holmcroft).
James, Kieran and Brodie all set Olympic standard times and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, which are due to take place this summer.
James is already a double Olympic medallist, after his success in Rio, 2016, and he achieved a rapid qualification time in the men’s 200m butterfly during the trials. James’ life as a swimmer has remained closely attached to Millfield since he graduated in 2014. Much of his training was based at Millfield in the Prep and Senior school swimming pools, having relocated with his family from Lancashire to pursue his swimming dreams. James says, “I don’t know where I would be today without Millfield. I really learnt to keep going, keep striving and never give up.”
Kieran produced an outstanding swim in the men’s 400m freestyle final, beating his previous personal best and qualifying him for Tokyo. Kieran only graduated from Millfield in 2018, and we have enjoyed seeing him achieve so much success since leaving school.
Brodie also did amazingly, reaching the men’s 100m backstroke final and qualifying for Tokyo. Brodie started swimming at just 2 years old, achieved a swimming scholarship to Millfield when he was 13 and had the opportunity to compete at an international level whilst he was still at school.
A huge well done to all of the OMs who competed!
