Former Millfield student presents Design and Technology talk on Robotics to BTEC Art students

Old Millfieldian Edward Chudleigh (1993-1996; Shapwick) presented a talk to Millfield BTEC Art students on the links between engineering and art and how he has used art technology to develop his new sustainable energy machine, Genesis2, and created thousands of PPE face shields for frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Edward attended Millfield on a scholarship and is now a pilot, engineer and artist after studying Industrial Design and Engineering at Brunel University. In his talk, Edward discussed his time at Millfield and how he began his career as a designer and engineer after developing one of the first elastic metals using a solar powered machine while studying at university.

Edward then worked at Dyson for 11 years as an engineer before opening his own robotics lab in Bath.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in spring 2020, Edward developed and created a design for plastic face shields within a few weeks, manufacturing thousands of 100% recyclable PPE products for front line workers with his not-for-profit company, Foldall.

At the end of his talk, Edward discussed the future of plastics and sustainable materials and his ongoing recyclable projects, which are currently being trialled at national fast food chains.
