From Millfield to the Mid-Atlantic: OM Rufus Lewis Takes on the World’s Toughest Row

Old Millfieldian Rufus Lewis (Walton House, 2015–2019) is preparing to take on one of the world’s most demanding endurance events: the World’s Toughest Row - Atlantic - a solo ocean row of more than 3,000 miles from San Sebastián de La Gomera to English Harbour, Antigua.

Rufus is set to race in December 2026, spending weeks at sea in a completely unsupported, self-sufficient crossing. Alone on the ocean, he will manage everything from navigation and weather to repairs, nutrition, and the mental challenge of isolation - all while rowing for up to 18 hours a day.

Millfield foundations

Rufus says the mindset behind the challenge can be traced back to his time at Millfield, where he was involved in triathlon and developed a love of endurance sport - and the discipline that comes with it.

“Millfield taught me to commit - to show up consistently and keep improving, even when it’s uncomfortable,” Rufus said. “That’s exactly what this row will demand."

Rufus hopes the challenge will inspire others to take on ambitious goals while supporting young people who need it most.

Raising £150,000 for young people across the UK

Alongside the sporting challenge, Rufus is aiming to raise £150,000 for Caudwell Youth, a charity that supports young people aged 11–24 who are at risk, through long-term mentoring.

“Every mile is an opportunity to raise awareness and help fund mentoring that can genuinely change a young person’s future,” Rufus said.

Currently seeking sponsors

As well as fundraising, Rufus is currently looking for sponsors and partners to support the campaign. Sponsorship helps cover the significant costs of preparing for and completing a solo ocean row, while also amplifying awareness of Caudwell Youth and the impact of mentoring across the UK.
