Millfield Athlete Performing on the National and International Stage

Upper Sixth Millfield Athlete Lucy Fellows has been performing on the national and international stage.

18-year-old Lucy began the year with a fantastic performance at the England Athletics Combined Events Championships in Sheffield. She put together some brilliant performances in her individual events scoring 3,707 points and taking the silver medal, missing out on the national title by just 20 points.

Following her performance in Sheffield, Lucy was selected to represent England at the 14th edition of the Indoor Combined Events Tallinn meeting. The competition was held at Lasnamäe Indoor Arena in Tallinn, Estonia, from Saturday 4 - Sunday 5 February. Lucy had a great experience at the event, finishing 20th with 3640 points amongst a field of top-level international athletes.

Reflecting on the experience, Lucy said “It was nothing like I have ever experienced before, and I loved every second. Travelling out with the England Team as well as staying in a hotel with the other athletes was so fun. The competition itself was amazing and gave me the opportunity to compete against a world silver medallist as well as several national record holders. That was a new experience for me competing at that kind of level for the first time which taught me so many lessons I never thought it would.”

Lucy swiftly backed up her international selection by claiming the title of U20 Long Jump National Champion at The England U20 Athletics Championships in Sheffield on the following weekend. In a closely fought competition, Lucy slipped into the silver medal position after round four. Showing great resolve, she produced her winning jump of 5.90 metres in round 5, before jumping the exact same distance in round 6.

Lucy, who is a boarder at Millfield, studies Maths, Geography and Business Studies at A level, and chose to come to the school because of the unrivalled sports provision, as well as the high academic standard. Lucy said, “I think the people within the world-class athletics programme at Millfield is what makes it so special. The team and coaches are all at such high levels and are the most caring people. When you surround yourself with these types of people, with the knowledge that they have, is in my opinion when you have the greatest chance of success. My teachers are also all incredibly helpful and understanding about my athletics commitment, and when in need of help they are very approachable and willing to do whatever they can.”

Lucy recently achieved her goal for this year after being selected to represent the Great Britain U20 team at the DNA Athletics meeting in Madrid. Competing in a unique head-to-head style long jump competition, Lucy finished fifth, contributing four points towards the team total and helping Great Britain to victory against the Czech Republic, France, Ireland, Spain and Portugal.
