Millfield athletes represent Great Britain at the Manchester International

Four Millfield students represented Great Britain in the junior athletics team at the Manchester International in August.

The British U18 and U20 teams included Sophie Hamilton, Lucy Chalmers and Harry Barton in Lower Sixth while recent leaver Seb Clatworthy represented Wales.

Sophie Hamilton took the gold medal in the junior javelin competition. The competition was an incredible experience for Sophie and her consistent victories predict a bright future next year.

Lucy Chalmers competed in U20s 400m hurdles, against senior women athletes from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the National Athletics league team for the second time this year. Lucy started focusing on hurdles in January 2021 so it’s an impressive progression to be representing her nation just a few months later.

Harry Barton ran the 110m hurdles in (14.46) and secured a commendable 4th place with one of his fastest times of the season.

Seb Clatworthy competed in the U20 high jump and won the bronze medal with a jump of 2.03m. He is now heading off to Princeton University in America to continue his high jump development alongside academics.

The athletes are following in the footsteps of Old Millfieldians and Olympians Jazmin Sawyers (British Track and Field Athlete) who competed at the Loughborough Internationals during her time at Millfield. She has gone on to achieve international success in her athletics career, recently making the Tokyo Olympics long jump final.

Alan Richardson, Director of Athletics said “It is a real pleasure to see young athletes achieve the ultimate, that is representing your country in your chosen sport. Not only is it an outstanding achievement but an outstanding opportunity to move towards future success and to be inspired to go further in sport.”
