Millfield Hosts Inaugural South West Regional Computational Thinking Shield 

Millfield School hosted the first South West Regional Computational Thinking Shield welcoming 114 students from across the South West of England.   

Organised by Millfield’s Computer Science Department, the competition aimed to inspire and challenge students in the fields of problem-solving, teamwork and logical thinking.   

The event which was on Friday 22 November, featured five rounds of complex puzzles, designed to test participants' ability to break down problems, think critically, and work effectively in teams. The competition provided a unique opportunity to foster curiosity, creativity and collaboration.   

The overall winners were an all-girls team from St Dunstan’s School, Glastonbury. Other notable performances came from students at Crispin School, Exeter School, Hugh Sexey Middle School, Queen’s College, Taunton Prep School and West Buckland. Additionally, teams from Millfield and Millfield Prep, comprising students from Years 7-9, also participated in the competition.   

Kirsty Rogers, Head of Computer Science at Millfield, said "The Computational Shield was designed not just to challenge students academically but to foster creativity, resilience and teamwork—the very qualities needed for success in the rapidly evolving world of technology."   

This inaugural competition highlights Millfield’s commitment to equipping students with the skills and confidence to excel in computational thinking. Plans are already underway to expand the event next year.
