Millfield Sixth Form student Yuhka has been named as one of the top young mathematical minds in Europe after placing second out of 195 contestants from 53 countries in the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad, held as a virtual competition because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is a mathematics competition for high school girls from all over Europe, and beyond. Yuhka completed the competition from home in Japan, and is part of the squad from which the UK team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) will be selected. The IMO was due to be in St Petersburg in July, but has now been postponed until September.
Sixteen-year-old Yuhka, who joined Millfield Prep School in 2013, also won a bronze medal and honourable mention at the 2020 Romanian Master of Mathematics Competition in Bucharest, in February. Yuhka competed as part of the UK team who placed 5th in the team competition with Russia taking the top spot, followed by Ukraine, USA and Bulgaria. Yuhka placed joint 43rd in the competition out of over 120 of the best young mathematicians in the world.
