Millfield named as the UK's number one Sports School for 2025

Millfield has been named as the number one sports school in the country for 2025.

The rankings, published annually by School Sports Magazine, sees Millfield claim top spot for the 12th time in 13 years. This is in recognition of both Millfield and Millfield Prep School’s continued success across a variety of sports. 

2025 proved to be another year of exceptional sporting performance at Millfield. A selection of the many exceptional achievements are as follows:

The boys’ U18 football first team were crowned U18 England Schools Football Association Arnold Clark Cup Champions for 2025. The team defeated Samuel Whitbread Academy 3-2 in an incredible final, played at EFL Championship club Stoke City’s Bet 365 stadium.

The U14 boys’ hockey team won the England Hockey Tier 1 National Final played at Lee Valley Hockey Centre. The boys defeated a very strong Repton School side on penalty shuffles following a well contested 1-1 draw.

The Millfield Endurance Squad made history at the English Schools Cross Country Cup Final, with the Senior Boys team finishing second, and the Senior Girls claiming third. This was Millfield’s first ever double podium finish at the event. Upper Sixth student Tom Webb, who was a member of the Senior Boys team, went on to win the TCS London Mini Marathon in April, coming out on top against the most promising young athletes from across the UK.

2025 proved an incredible year for individual success from Millfield cricketers. Upper Sixth Caleb Falconer scored 74 on debut for the England Invitational XI, and signed a professional contract with Middlesex CCC. Lower Sixth Laila Moledina formed part of the Girls First XI who reached the national quarter finals, and was the top scorer in the ECB U18 Regional Girls festival at Loughborough.

Millfield Fencing secured a historic 12th consecutive victory at the Public Schools’ National Three-Day Fencing Championships. Students from Year 8 to Upper Sixth contributed to a remarkable 10 trophies, including Overall Best School and Best Girls’ Team.

In Rugby, the First XV claimed the Schools Championship title for 2024-2025, sealed with a 33-10 win over Sedbergh on the Sir Gareth Edwards Pitch. The team also finished as runners up in the prestigious St Joseph’s Festival, losing 10-7 to Wellington College in a thrilling final.

Millfield Netball achieved incredible success across a number of teams and age groups. The First team were crowned as National Champions in the Sisters n Sport cup, and World Schools Champions at the World Schools Games in Abu Dhabi. These victories were complimented by an impressive third place finish at the England Netball National Schools Finals.

Millfield rowers beat Cambridge University’s development crew in the British Rowing Championships, bringing home multiple medals. Millfield pipped the Cambridge team to win the silver medal in the Women’s Club 4+. The young school team competed against university-aged crews, including Cambridge, whose squad were competing for a prestigious spot in the famous Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race. Over the four-day event, 11 crews competed across multiple categories, with the team’s efforts culminating in outstanding results, including four crews reaching A Finals and multiple medal wins.

Millfield swimmers achieved phenomenal success on both the national and international stage, with over 35 international selections. In the summer of 2025, almost 50 Millfield swimmers competed in national and international meets, securing 29 national medals, 11 international medals and dozens of records. A standout performer was Upper Sixth Filip Nowacki, whose gold medal swim in the Men's 100m Breaststroke at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Romania was preceded by a record-breaking European Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in July. In the process of claiming 200m Breaststroke gold, Filip twice broke the Championship Record, and broke the European Junior Record, with a time that would have placed him fourth in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Millfield Prep reinforced their position as a powerhouse in school swimming at the National IAPS Swimming Finals in London, where the girls' team were crowned overall IAPS National Champions for the 37th consecutive year, while the boys’ team were champions for the 23rd consecutive year. Millfield Prep pupils excelled at the 2025 IAPS Trampolining Finals, held at Royal Russell School; first-place titles went to Millfield teams in the U9, U13, and U13 Plate competitions. The U13 girls cricket team also enjoyed a memorable season, reaching the National Indoor Finals, held at Lord’s.

Millfield Sport offers students diverse range of sporting opportunities, with 30 sports currently being offered. 200 sports staff, with 1850 years of cumulative coaching experience, enable a dynamic and flexible sporting timetable, in outstanding facilities, catering for all abilities and aspirations.
