Millfield sailor selected to compete for Great Britain at European Championships

Millfield sailor Maia Delin has been selected to compete for Great Britain at the European Sailing Championships this April, following a series of ranking events in the past year.

The event will see Maia compete for Team GB against 124 sailors at the 2023 ILCA 4 European Championships and Open European Trophy, which are to be held in Cadiz, Spain from 15-22 April.

Fifteen-year-old Maia, who is in Year 10 at Millfield, will be the youngest girl on the GB team, which is composed of the top six girls in the country and the top 11 boys by ranking.

Maia joined Millfield Prep in Year 7 in 2019, and studies Economics, Geography, History and French GCSEs alongside the core subjects. She boards at Millfield, and is one of four siblings across the Prep and Senior Schools.

Maia has been preparing for the event through her packed training schedule, which comprises of at least three sailing sessions a week, including Wednesday and Saturday training with the school team. She also trains at Weymouth and Portsmouth National Sailing Academy as part of the South West Regional and National ranked squads. Maia competes in regatta events all year round, and fills her school holidays with national level and international competitions. She hopes to rank in the top 10 U16 girls at the European Championships, potentially qualifying her for the ILCA 4 World Championships in Greece later this year. When not sailing, Maia swims with the Millfield team, who she will represent at the upcoming South West Regional Swimming Championships.

Maia said “I am very proud to represent Great Britain at the European Championships, especially being the youngest on the team. I am really looking forward to the event; Spain has great sailing conditions and hopefully we will have great winds. It will be nice to sail in the warmer waters and to race against some of the best in Europe in my class of boat.”
