Millfield Student Wins Rotary Young Musician Competition

Millfield pianist Hannah Yap has been announced as the winner of a prestigious Young Musician Competition celebrating classical musicians. 

The Rotary (Greater Bristol) Young Musician Competition recognised outstanding young classical musicians from across Bristol and the surrounding counties. 

Year 10 Hannah, from Street, impressed the judges in the final with performances of three piano pieces, securing her place to progress to the regional and national stages of the Rotary Young Musician Competition. The competition, organised by seven local Rotary Clubs, is open to instrumentalists and vocalists aged 13 to 17 in full-time education who are performing at Grade 7 standard or above. 

Hannah’s success reflects years of dedication and hard work. She began learning the piano at just four years old and now practises for around two hours every day, alongside regular violin, and vocal practice. Speaking about her achievement, Hannah said: 
“Winning the Young Musician Competition meant a great deal to me. It was incredibly rewarding to see my hard work recognised, and it gave me confidence and motivation to continue developing as a performer.” 

Millfield allows Hannah to balance her music commitments with her academic studies. She said “I plan my practice around my schoolwork and make good use of free periods and weekends. Millfield’s supportive environment has made it much easier to manage both at a high level.”   

Hannah praised Millfield’s music programme saying she receives “encouragement and support from the music department, as well as the opportunities to perform and work with inspiring teachers and other musicians. The programme really allows students to grow both technically and musically.” 

Kirsty Barry, Director of Music at Millfield is extremely proud of Hannahs achievement “This is just one in an amazing array of successes, demonstrating her love of music making, and hard work through practice and commitment.”  

Looking ahead, Hannah hopes to continue developing her musical talents by performing more concerto and solo repertoire and taking part in major competitions and international performances. “I would love to pursue music at a higher level and continue sharing it with wider audiences.”
