On Friday 5 February, we were excited to host our second online event dedicated to Millfield in the 60’s. The guest speakers for the event were OMs Malcolm Tucker (1961-1965; Millfield), Rod Speed (1964-1966; Day), Lesley Warner (1967-1971; Portway), Elizabeth Monnet (1967-1970; Grange), and President of the OM Society, John Davies.
All of our guest speakers regaled us with wonderful stories and memories from their years at Millfield and we loved seeing all of the comments from the participants in the chat function!
Our first guest speaker, Liz Monnet (née French), shared funny anecdotes about ‘Boss’ Meyer, the first Millfield Headmaster, and discussed her favourite subjects whilst she was at school.
The second guest to speak was Rod Speed, an OM and former member of staff! Rod aspired to come back to the school and teach; he spent 38 years teaching Geography and is still closely involved with the OM Society. It was lovely to hear him say that “Millfield has been my life and still is!”
The third guest speaker, Lesley Warner, was at school with Liz and they knew each other well! We loved hearing about some of Lesley’s fondest memories from her time at Millfield, which included sitting in the sun for outdoor lessons and dance classes on Sunday afternoons.
The final guest speaker, Malcolm Tucker, is also still a huge part of the OM Society. Malcolm shared his memories of swimming at Millfield and the impact that the school has had on his life, preparing him for a range of situations and scenarios.
It was fantastic to hear memories from all of our guest speakers and attendees about this dynamic decade at Millfield, and great to have John Davies, President of the OM Society, rounding off the event!
