Sport Round Up - February 2022

In athletics, the Millfield team travelled to Cardiff to compete in their first indoor competition since 2020. 

Year 10 Stefan Chirita jumped a new personal best in the long jump of 5.69m, while Ernesta Danquah Amoah made her debut in the high jump with a well put together competition, achieving 1.45m. 

Year 11 Gerard McGrady recorded two new personal bests in his events, running 56.14s in the 400m and a superb 26.00 in the 200m. 

Lower Sixth Tyra Jagtiani made her debut in the 200m and ran a strong 26.97s to make the semi-finals. 

Year 10 Carlotta Muller achieved a personal best in the long jump, leaping to 4.96m, which ranks her within the top 10 in the UK, while Year 10 Oscar Webb also jumped well. 

Lower Sixth Sabrina Jones (8.49s), Year 10 Carlotta Muller (8.44s) and Lower Sixth Tyra Jagtiani (8.28s) all recorded personal best times in the 60m sprint. 

Lower Sixth Lucy Fellows completed her first hurdles race over senior height and distances, running 9.12s. 

Upper Sixth Ella Smith ran a superb 26.04s to win the 200m open championship ahead of teammate Upper Sixth Keira Gilman (26.90s).  

Upper Sixth Harry Barton and Matt Bailey reached the finals of the 60m sprints, both achieving national standard times. 

Lower Sixth Ella Wintle ran a new season’s best of 1:01.09 to take the silver medal in the 400m national championships. 

Upper Sixth Ella Smith, Tottie Taylor and Keira Gilman all ran national standard times in the 60m sprint, with Ella running 7.99, Tottie 8.08 and Keira 8.20. 

Millfield Athletics also headed to Sheffield for the England Indoor championships, where top class athletics was on show across the weekend.

Upper Sixth Tottie Taylor and Keira Gilman, and Lower Sixth Tyra Jagtiani, all set personal bests in their heats for the U20 womens’ 60 metre race. 

Lower Sixth Lucy Fellows finished in 5th place in the U20 womens’ long jump despite being two years younger than most of her competitors. 

Upper Sixth Harry Barton finished 7th in the top class 60 metre boys’ hurdles, equalling his personal best of 8.02 seconds in the fastest race seen in England for many years.  

Upper Sixth Sophie Hamilton competed for England at U20 level in the Throws International competition in Vaxjo, Sweden. She performed well against a field of older athletes to finish 5th in the javelin with a 42m throw.

In biathlon, Year 9 Annabelle Suffield, Oliver Tomlinson, Tom Webb, Reuben Alty, Dexter Townsend, Year 10 Zac Cooper, Bea Kinnear, Bianca Gomez-Velasco, Francesca Woollard, Year 11 Tate Green, Gerard McGrady, Lower Sixth Jasmine Caley, Upper Sixth Juliette Janne D'Othee, Olivia Mahony, Emily Crookes and Charlotte Tilney all qualified for the British Modern Biathlon Championships, which is to be held at the University of Bath on 26 February. 

In cricket, Upper Sixth Cal Harvey has been named as the captain of Meyer’s XI this season. 

Somerset Cricket 1st XI bowlers and Bowling Coach, Steve Kirby, used the top-class facilities in the cricket centre over half term. 

In equestrian, Year 10 Harriet Blair placed fourth in the 1m at the 2022 BE Arena Eventing Championships. 

In fencing, Lower Sixth Umar Badroel Rizwan achieved a bronze medal at the U17 Malaysian rankings, helping his selection process for the 2022 Asian Championships. 

Lower Sixth Lauren Tang has been selected to represent Malaysia at the 2022 Asian Fencing Championships and is currently through to the T16 stage. 

Upper Sixth Kelsey Woname and Year 9 Kaden Woname have been selected to represent Ghana at the African Championships. 

Lower Sixth Renee Nassozi Kiggundu has been selected to represent Uganda at the 2022 African Championship. 

Lower Sixth Sabrina Jones and Year 11 Maisie Everett represented Team GB at the European Fencing Circuit in Krakow. 

Millfield hosted the South West Regional Fencing Championships, with great results. 

In the U18 boys Foil, Lower Sixth Umar Badroel Rizwan finished first, Upper Sixth Ben Huckle was second, while Year 11 Isaac Searle was sixth. 

In the U18 girls Foil, Lower Sixth Lauren Tang finished first. 

In the U16 boys Foil, Year 11 Arseniy Orekhov was third, while Year 10 Aleksey Ageyev Jr was eighth. 

In the U16 girls Foil, Year 9 Evie Colyer finished third. 

In the U18 girls Epee, Lower Sixth Sabrina Jones finished first, Upper Sixth Vivien Taylor was second, Upper Sixth Abbie Freeman was third, while Lower Sixth Laura Judge-Wee was fifth. 

In the U18 boys Epee, Upper Sixth Peri Newman was third, while Year 11 Jamie Mackelden was fifth. 

In the U16 girls Epee, Year 11 Haleena Callaghan was first, Year 11 Maisie Everett was second, while Year 9 Evie Colyer was third. 

In the U16 boys Epee, Year 11 Patrick Jackson was fifth, Year 10 Harrison Cox was eighth, Year 10 Stefan Chirita was eleventh, while Year 10 Charlie Weston was thirteenth. 

In the U14 girls Epee, Year 9 Steffi Berndt De La O was first. 

In the U14 boys Epee, Year 9 Andéol Drion was third, while Year 9 Oliver Tomlinson was sixteenth. 

So far, 32 Millfield students have qualified for the 2022 British Youth Championships with one more event to go. 

In football, Lower Sixth Catrin Thomas played in goal for Wales U17 game against Scotland. 

The boys first team are through to the round of 16 of the ESFA cup and will face Barton Peveril Sixth Form College in the next round. 

The girls first team are through to the semi-finals of the ISFA cup and will face Rossall School in the next round.  

In golf, Upper Sixth Dewi John has been selected to represent Wales in their upcoming U18 match against Ireland. Read more here

Lower Sixth Harriet Lockley and Upper Sixth Gracie Mayo played in the Portuguese Ladies Championship and are heading off to play in the Spanish Ladies Open early March. 

In hockey, the senior girls won the Independent Schools Hockey Championship at the Olympic Park in London. The U15s placed fourth in their respective competition. 

The girls first XI are into the semi-finals of the England Hockey Tier 1 national competition, having defeated Sedbergh 2-0 in the quarter final.

The girls U16 are into the England Hockey Tier 1 national final, they will play Repton at Lee Valley on Thursday 3 March. 

OM’s Vicki McCabe, Kitty Chapple and Becky Manton have all been included in the GB Elite Development Programme, with all three in line for U21 selection for the Junior World Cup in South Africa. 

The boys U16 team have progressed through to the last 16 of the England Hockey Tier 1 national competition. 

Upper Sixth Tottie Taylor has accepted a sports scholarship at Stanford University. Recent OM Kitty Chapple will join Ivy League Harvard University. Read more here

OM Stuart Rushmere was selected for the England Hockey Senior Men’s Squad in their FIH Pro League squad against Spain. 

Upper Sixth Ines Braithwaite has been signed to Sacred Heart University on a field hockey and academic scholarship. 

In netball, the U15 girls’ netball team qualified for the ISNC final, defeating Hurstpierpoint College in the semi-final.

Lower Sixth Ella Honey has been selected into the U17 Ireland Squad for 2022-23 season. 

Lower Sixth Darcy Highmore has been selected into the U17 Scotland Squad. 

In pentathlon, Year 9 Oliver Tomlinson, Annabelle Suffield, Steffi Berndt De La O, Year 10 Bianca Gomez-Velasco, Zac Cooper and Year 11 Tate Green all recently received acceptance on to the Athlete Development Programme pathway for Pentathlon GB. 

Upper Sixth Olivia Mahony competed at the Junior and Senior Pentathlon GB ranking, placing 12th in a strong field of 25. 

In rugby, five Old Millfieldians have been selected to represent their countries in this year’s Six Nations. Josh Bayliss (Scotland) and Callum Sheedy (Wales) received senior call-ups while players Ewan Richards (England), Will Joseph (England) and Tom Cowan (Wales) were selected for the U20 event. Upper Sixth rugby player Sam Harris attended the England U18 development training camp over half term. 

Upper Sixth Max Pearce has been offered a Rugby and Academic scholarship at St. Bonaventure University, New York. 

The U15 and U16 sevens teams will travel to Broad Street RFC to face Sedbergh in a number of matches this weekend, in readiness for upcoming tournaments. 

In swimming, the Millfield team had an extremely successful year at the Somerset County Championships, achieving 98 gold medals, 85 silver medals, and 91 bronze medals. A special congratulations to Year 9 Reuben Alty who won a staggering 10 gold medals.  

In tennis, Year 9 Rafe Samuel won the Grade 3 U16 event in Bristol. 

Lower Sixth Francesca Davis obtained her first singles and doubles senior world ranking points at the women's $25,000 events in Bath and Glasgow. 

Year 9 Hugo Dunn reached the singles semi-finals of the Bath U14 Winter National Tour event, with Year 9 Charlie Ruffell also reaching the quarter-finals in the singles and Year 9 Joshua Craze winning the doubles event.  

Joshua Craze and Charlie Ruffell finished in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, at the Under 16 Winter Regional Tour event in Barnstaple. 

In squash, Year 11 Amelie Haworth played up an age group to finish second in the England Squash Warwick Silver U19 competition. 

The Key Stage 5 girls’ team qualified as squash national finalists, finishing top of their group. They will travel to Nottingham for finals week next month.
