Sport Round Up - June 2022

In football, Upper Sixth student Clarissa Jackson and Ella Smith, and Lower Sixth students Lauren Pickup and Maya Kendell have all received their first official caps for representing the England ISFA U18 National Team. 

In rugby, OM Will Joseph was selected for the England senior squad for their upcoming tour of Australia. 

OM Oli Burrows has been selected for Wales U20s for the Six Nations Summer Series. 
 
Upper Sixth student Sam Harris and OM Evan Richards have been selected to represent England in the Six Nations Summer Series in Italy. 

The rugby 7s boys first team competed at Twickenham in the Rosslyn Park London 7s event. 

In athletics, OM Jazmin Sawyers has been selected to represent Team England at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Read the full story here. 

OM Elise Thorner won a bronze medal in the steeplechase at the UK Athletics Championships in Manchester. She has been selected to represent Great Britain in the upcoming U23 European Championships in Estonia. 

The Millfield Athletics squad took part in the Somerset Schools Championships in Yeovil. Athletes were competing to attain a place in the Somerset team for the following weekend’s South West Championship.  

Year 9 Lois Moore jumped 1.55m in the high jump to book her place in the team for the following weekend, while Tom Webb followed suit in the 1500 meters, running a 4:19 which places him within the English Schools qualifying standard. 

Year 10 Venetia Mahony claimed a personal best of 1.65m in the high jump, placing her in the top five in the country for her age group, while Amalia Eneanya-Bonito followed up with a personal best of her own, throwing 12.87m in the shot putt. 

Lower Sixth Lucy Fellows leapt 6.03m in second round of the long jump to record a new personal best, which elevated her to a top six spot in the country.  

Rounding off the day was Upper Sixth Sophie Hamilton. The Great Britain Junior international launched her javelin out to 50.08m for a new school record, championships record and a top 16 all-time U20 javelin distance. 

Five Millfield students took part in the South West Combined Events Championships in Yeovil, with all five successfully qualifying for the English Schools Combined Events Championships in September later this year.

A number of season best performances saw Lower Sixth Lucy Fellows come away with a heptathlon personal best of 4762 points, while Year 10 Oscar Webb set a range of personal bests himself as part of the victorious Somerset Team, who he will represent at the English Schools Finals. The Somerset junior girls team included Year 10 Maeve Murray, Year 9 Lois Moore and Zoe Allen, with all three students claiming personal bests in different events to help Somerset win the competition. 

30 Millfield students represented Somerset in the Southwest Schools championships in Exeter. Notable performances on the day came from Upper Sixth Harry Barton, Lower Sixth Noah Miller, Year 11 Iris Courtney, Year 10 students Venetia Mahony and Amalia Eneanya-Bonito and Year 9 Tom Webb, Charlie Roebuck and Zoe Allen. 

The following students have qualified to represent Somerset in the National Schools Finals in Manchester: Upper Sixth Harry Barton, Sophie Hamilton, Keira Gilman, Sophia Wilson, Ella Smith, Lower Sixth Lucy Fellows, Freya Buglass, Noah Miller, Toks Akanbi-Mortimer and Ella Wintle, Year 11 Iris Courtney, Year 10 Venetia Mahony and Year 9 Annabelle Suffield, Tom Webb, Gemma Tolputt, Zoe Allen and Lois Moore. 

In modern pentathlon, the Millfield squad attended the South West Laser Run at Leweston School, which was a qualifier for the National Finals in September.  

Year 9 Daniel Pearce placed first in his age group, while Year 11 Gerard McGrady and Year 10 Francesca Woollard both placed second in theirs respectively. All three have qualified for the National Finals. Year 10 Bianca Gomez-Velasco and Year 9 Annabelle Suffield both placed second in the Pathway Athlete category for their respective age groups.  

Millfield attended the National Schools' Biathle Championships at Leweston school on the 19 June. 

Year 9 Tom Webb was crowned National Biathle Champion, with Cai Lewis third, Oliver Tomlinson fourth and Daniel Pearce sixth. The team were crowned overall National Champions. Year 9 Annabelle Suffield placed second in the Year 9 girls category. 

In the year 10 age group, Francesca Woollard placed fifth, while Jamie Bedford was second and Stefan Chirita fifth in the boys category. 

Year 11 Gerard McGrady was crowned National Biathle Champion in the Year 11 category. 

Year 9 Tom Webb competed at the UIPM international Biathle in Madeira. Tom won the U15 category and lead by 29 seconds. Year 10 Stefan Chirita finished third in the U17 event, representing Romania, while Bianca Gomez Velasco represented GB in the U17 girls category.

In hockey, OM’s Toby Reynolds-Cotterill and Hannah Cozens have been selected to take part in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where they will both represent Wales. 

In netball, Year 10 students Cammie Collins, Venetia Mahony, Amalia Eneanya-Bonito, and Year 9 Olivia Pitt have been selected for the U15 Team Bath long squad in preparation for the upcoming 2022 School Games. Read the full story here. 

In skiing, Upper Sixth student George Black has selected GB Snowsport Alpine Squad for 2022-23.

In golf, Year 9 Freddie Turnell was part of the Somerset Men’s Team for the South West Counties Week, and finished unbeaten with four singles wins from four matches, and claimed three and a half out of four matches in the foursomes, where he played alongside OM Phil White. Freddie went on to finish in third place at the South West Youths at Minchinhampton Golf Club, scoring seven under par. In the English U18 Championship at Woodhall Spa, Freddie finished tied in 31st place. 

Upper Sixth Gracie Mayo finished 50th in the German Girls Championship. 
 
Lower Sixth student Harriet Lockley travelled internationally to compete, finishing tied 12th in the Annika Invitational, Sweden, 23rd in the St Rule at St Andrews and 77th in the German Girls Championship. 

Harriet was joined by Upper Sixth Gracie Mayo, Lower Sixth Hugo Wu, Josh Izod, Year 10 Thomas Richardson and William Welsh in the HMC National Foursome Finals at Little Aston, where Millfield finished in third place. 

Upper Sixth student Gracie Mayo and Lower Sixth Harriet Lockley have been selected to represent Wales Ladies in the European Championships at Conway, Wales. 

Lower Sixth Sophie Sharp was a semi-finalist in the ITA Wallace Plate at the AIG Irish Women’s Amateur Close Championship.

Year 10 student William Welsh finished 12th in the Wiltshire Boy’s County Championship. 

Year 9 Abigail Moore finished 12th in the 13-14 U.S. European Championship at Musselburgh, Scotland. 

In tennis, Lower Sixth student Francesca Davis competed in the Wimbledon Pre-Qualifying event. 

The U18 boys B team defeated Exmouth College to qualify for the finals of the National Schools Championships, where they will be joined by the girls and boys A teams.

In swimming, Lower Sixth student Harry Hewitt has been selected for the Great Britain Open Water team. 

Lower Sixth student Conor Cherrington has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Youth Olympic Festival, where he will be joined by Millfield Swim Coach Matthew Puddy, who has been selected to coach the team. 

Millfield Swim Coach Ryan Livingstone has been selected as a coach for the British Team at the European Swimming Championships in Rome, Italy. 

The Millfield Swimming team enjoyed huge success at the 2022 Swim England South West Regional Swimming Championships, with multiple students collecting victories in their respective events. 

Upper Sixth student Tamryn van Selm was 400m freestyle open champion, while Evan Jones was open champion in the 100m fly and 400m freestyle 

Lower Sixth Alex Painter was open champion in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events, while Conor Cherrington was 16 years champion in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 50m fly events.  

Year 11 Nicole De Pree was 50m and 100m freestyle champion in the 16 years category. 

Year 10 student Lauchlan Parrott was 15 years champion in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 50m fly, Charlotte Hardy was 15 years champion in the 100m and 50m breaststroke, Sienna Franklyn-Miller was 15 years champion in the 50m freestyle while Ivan Hart was 16 years champion in the 800m freestyle. 

Year 9 Eva Lawson was the 14 years champion in the 200m freestyle, Megs Higgs was champion in the 100m and 50m freestyle for the 14 years category, Sophie Davies was 15 years champion in the 100m and 800m freestyle events, while Reuben Alty won the 14 years 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 800m freestyle. 

In triathlon, OM Erica Hawley has been selected to represent Bermuda in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. 

In fencing, the Millfield fencing team took part in the British Youth Championships. All students who took part put in fantastic performances, with great success across the board. 

Upper Sixth Alex Cupper was tenth in the U18 Boys Foil. 

Lower Sixth Renee Nassozi Kiggundu was third in the U18 girls Sabre, while Lauren Tang was seventh in the U18 girls Foil. 

Year 11 Haleena Callaghan was second in the U16 girls Epee, while Maisie Everett was ninth. In the U16 boys Epee, Patrick Jackson was sixth. 

Year 9 Evie Colyer was seventh in the U16 girls Foil.
