Sport Round Up - March 2020

In Athletics, Millfield students competed in Vault Cardiff, with Lower Sixth Jami S clearing his first 4 metre jump. 

OM Ollie T received the highest ever indoor heptathlon score by a British Junior at the MPSF Championships, Seattle, Washington.

In Clay Shooting, teams competed in the Harrow Fido Cup placing second and third overall in the main competition and first and second in the Flush competition. Year 10 James H placed second in the High Gun.

Millfield won the Cheltenham Shield, winning both the overall competition and Flush competition. Year 10 Ivor F won the High Gun.

In Cricket, Millfield are teaming up with England Test Captain Joe Root and ‘The Root Academy’ in an exclusive deal which brings the world-class cricket programme to Somerset. Read more. 

In Cross Country, 14 students represented Somerset in the English Schools Cross Country finals at Sefton Park. Year 12 William A placed 72/323 in the Senior Boy category, Year 9 Jack H placed 99/340 in the Junior Boys race, Lower Sixth Pia L placed 100/298 in the Senior Girls and Year 10 Daisy P placed 117/335 in the Intermediate Girls race. 

In Dance, performance group Aspire performed in their Spring Forward. 

Dance students also worked with commitment and focus to perform this year’s show on camera. With outstanding effort and team spirit, the dancers performed a varied and highly entertaining programme in full costume and lights. 

In Fencing, Millfield hosted the Pentathlon GB Talent group training. 

Millfield competed at the British Fencing School team championships coming home as U11, U13 and U18 champions with U15 finishing in second place. 

Year 9 Oliver C competed in English Fencing’s U15 sabre in Barcelona. 

In Football, the boys’ first team bought the ISFA trophy home for the fifth time after winning the final at Stadium MK 5-4 in extra time. Read more. 

Four members of the first team have accepted places to study in America; Upper Sixth Toby M and Rafa P have both received football scholarships for Ashland university in Ohio Cleveland, Ben J received a soccer and academic scholarship from Adelphi University in New York City and Dominic C will attend McKendree University in Illinois on a Football scholarship. 

In Girls’ Football, the U18 girls’ first team played in the ESFA semi-finals, this was the furthest they had reached in the competition. 

In Hockey, the boys’ U14A team have become regional final winners and the first Millfield Boys U14 side to get to the national finals in five years. 

In Netball, our U16 team competed in the England Netball National Schools Tournament placing fifth. 

Lower Sixth Catrin R played for the Welsh National team at Netball Europe bringing home a silver medal whilst Lower Sixth Olivia R represented her native country Switzerland. 

In Outdoor Adventure, four groups of students set off on their three-day independent practice expedition in Snowdonia for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. 

In Rugby, five players have received international call ups for their native countries, the largest amount in 11 years. Oliver B and Tom C have played for Wales’ U18 squad whilst Dan J plays for Wales U20. Ewan R has played for England U18 s and Bath U18s, Will J plays for London Irish and has played for England U18s. 

In squash, Year 9 Amelie H won the Girls’ U15 Dunlop English Junior Championships after competing in Hull earlier this month. 

Year 9 Amelie H and Ayaan competed at the German Junior Open with Amelie coming first and Ayaan placing 9th Boys’ U15 event. 

Three teams have progressed to the finals of the National Schools Squash Championships. 

In Swimming, Millfield placed second in the National Arena Swimming League. 

In Tennis, Frankie D and Joel G travelled to London to compete in the Junior National Tennis Masters, placing them in the top 16 of players nationally in their age groups.
