In Athletics, Millfield athletes competed at English Schools’ Cross Country Championships, Liverpool. The English Schools’ Cross Country Championships is one of the UK’s most prestigious school athletics events, featuring over 300 competitors in each race drawn from the top runners in every county. Millfield students were selected to represent Somerset Schools’ across all age groups. Highlights included Upper Sixth Tom W’s superb 20th place finish, putting him among the leading athletes in his age group. Congratulations to all who took part including Year 9 Kiki F, Lottie B, Arthur S and JJ W. Year 10 Ana P-M, Year 11 Sam J, Lower Sixth Bella H, Alex S, Liam D and Upper Sixth Eva H. 

In Cricket, Upper Sixth Dexter T was chosen for the Gloucestershire CCC Professional Staff Pre-season tour to South Africa, between 7 March and 22 March.  

Year 10 Arabella G has been promoted into the Somerset CCC Emerging Player Programme  

Lower Sixth Coby C has been selected for the Cricket Scotland U17 Squad for the upcoming Cricket Season. 

In Clay Shooting, a successful three weeks for the Millfield Clay Shooting squad has seen the team claim four wins in four competitions.  

At the Harrow Fido May fixture, the first team of Upper Sixth Oliver A, Satya S, Lower Sixth Jack E (overall High Gun) and Archie M.  

Millfield Ladies took sixth place overall out of the 31 teams taking part. The team included Upper Sixth Matilda W (who also took ladies High Gun), Year 11 Peggy S, Mikaela P and Rebecca Z.  

Overall, Millfield took six teams which all placed in the top 14 positions. The First Team also won the Flush competition.   

Millfield students competed in the Cheltenham College Smeaton Farquhar Challenge, a four-school competition won by Millfield first team of Upper Sixth Oliver A (High Gun), Lower Sixth Jack E, Year 11 Jedidiah R-A and Charles E. They also won the Flush competition.  

The Bradfield Inter Schools Challenge at the Purdey Shooting Ground was won by the Millfield First team of Oliver A (High Gun), Satya S and Year 11 Charles E.  

The Bredon School ISA/Open CPS was won by the Millfield Second Team of Year 11 Charles E (High Gun), Jedidiah R-A, Toby W and Year 10 Henry I.  

The Ladies Team came second on their first run out as a team. The team included Lower Sixth Rania G, Serena S and Year 11 Peggy S (Ladies High Gun).  

The team also competed in the Nationals competition at Eaton Hall Derbyshire. 

In Equestrian, at the NSEA Elite Qualifiers at Bicton, the 1m team won and qualified for the Hickstead Championships. The team included Upper Sixth Manige D, Lower Sixth Bella S-L, Mimi W and Year 10 Kiya K. In the 1.10m Elite Individual Qualifier, Year 10 Kiya K finished in second place and qualified for the Championships at Hickstead. 

The Millfield team of Year 11 Finn M, Year 10 Ksenia K and Year 9 Mercedes T competed at the Polo SUPA Onley Grounds on 1 March.  

At the British Showjumping event in Chard, Upper Sixth Gracie D placed seventh in the 1.10m Grand Prix. In the Academy Show, Year 9 Martha D won the 85cms National Amateur Qualifier.  

At the Kings Sedgemoor Unaffiliated Showjumping, Year 11 Jimena D A F was first in the 1.10cms and second in the 1m. Year 9 Martha D won the 80cms and was second in the 90cms. Year 11 Bianca B was first in the 85cms.   

Students took part in the British Dressage Mendip Plains event. Those who competed were: Year 10 Amelie G (Preliminary 4), Year 9 Alya A (Preliminary 4) and Year 11 Camellia V (Novice 4). 

In Fencing, Millfield teams competed in the British School Team Championships in London. The event saw one Millfield’s strongest performances in the past five years, with five teams becoming National team Champions, two claiming silver medals and three winning bronze over the two days. The U18 Boys Foil Team won their event for the first time in eight years.  

The four national champion teams were as follows: U18 Girls Epee (Upper Sixth Evie C, Alice K, Lower Sixth Dora J and Daisy B). U18 Girls Sabre (Upper Sixth Evie C, Maisie S, Lower Sixth Victoria B and Dora J). U15 Girls Epee (Year 10 Eva D, Year 9 Polly W, Katie G, and Rihana V). U18 Boys Foil (Upper Sixth Anton S, Year 11 Kuzey A, Henry G and Jason S).  

Millfield won the Overall Best School trophy at the British Public Schools National Championships for the 13th consecutive year. The victory was complimented with the Most Improved School Award.  

A 42-student strong squad from Year 7 to Upper Sixth travelled to London for the three-day event. Significant victories from the event included: Overall Combined (Best Boys and Girls School across all events all ages), Johnson Cup (most last eight Girls Sabre), Queenswood Cup (highest points across Senior Girls Foil, Epee and Sabre), Whitgift Cup (highest points across Mount Hayes Boys Foil, Epee and Sabre), Bishop Challoner Trophy (highest points across Mount Hayes Girls Foil, Epee and Sabre), Centenary Cup (boys school making best increase in overall points), Graham Langton Cup (Girls school making best increase in overall points), Ann Williamson Cup (highest points in all girls events for all ages), The Graham Bartlett Cup (highest points in all boys events for all ages), Keeble Cup (best Girls Epee School). Year 10 Eva D was Girls Junior Champion at Arms. The Boys Mount Hayes Master at Arms was Year 9 Kruze F, while Polly W was the Girls Mount Hayes Champion at Arms.   

In Golf, Millfield golfers competed in the Somerset Schools Championships at Weston on 18 March. Six players finished in the top 10 of the Boys Championships and in the top two of the Girls Championship. Lower Sixth Carolin M won the Girls with a gross 76, on the back 9 from Upper Sixth Abbie M (6). Year 10 Jack I was runner-up in the Boys Championship with gross 71, followed closely by Alexander L with 72. Upper Sixth Leon B, Lower Sixth Joss M, Toby M and Year 10 Matthew B did well and finished in the top 10.   

Lower Sixth Joss M, Toby M and Year 10 Alexander L won the Team gross with a combined score of 223 from Taunton School.  

Four students played in the recent Swifts Schools Golf Strokeplay event at Royal Ashdown. This is a 54-hole event. Year 10 Zane B finished 14th, Year 11 Jack M 18th, Lower Sixth Toby M 23rd and Joss M 36th. 

In Martial Arts, Upper Sixth Emma M passed her 1st dan black belt during the Spring Gasshuku at the Wincanton Dojo. Emma's assessment was judged by a panel of six senior black belts using our new curriculum, the panel were very impressed with Emma's performance.  

Year 11 Myriam Z passed blue belt, Lower Sixth Leon H gained his green belt and Year 9 Lisa F graded to Yellow Belt. 

In Netball, March was a highly successful month across the netball programme, with teams delivering strong performances throughout. The First team produced one of their standout showings of the season at the England Netball National Schools Finals, finishing an impressive fifth in the country after competing against the top schools nationwide and demonstrating outstanding consistency throughout the day. This result also marks the fifth consecutive year that Millfield’s U19s have placed inside the top five at Nationals, more than any other school.  

Both the U15s and Second team enjoyed excellent campaigns in their respective County Cup competitions, each securing third place after a series of competitive and hard‑fought matches. Their achievements showcased the depth within the programme, with both squads demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and continued progress across the season.  

Year 11 Gracie T represented Northern Ireland at the U17 Netball Europe Championships.   

In Rugby, March has been an outstanding month for Millfield Rugby, with impressive performances, tournament victories, and displays of resilience from teams right across the school. On one weekend in March, 132 pupils represented Millfield across the rugby programmes.  

The U16 Girls began the month in strong form, winning the West of England 7s.  

Both the U18 and U16 Girls teams travelled to the Hill House 7s, where they delivered excellent performances and won their respective competitions, showcasing dynamic, fast, free‑flowing rugby throughout the day.  

A bare squad of seven U14 Girls travelled to Hill House and delivered one of the toughest shifts of the season. They completed five consecutive matches with minimal rest, showing exceptional determination, teamwork, and resilience.  

At the Continental Tyres National Schools Cup, the U15 Boys squad defeated a strong Beechen Cliff side in the quarter-final of the national cup competition. They then produced a brave performance in the semi-final against Whitgift, narrowly missing out in the final moments of a tightly contested match.  

A very successful month of sevens for the U14 Boys saw the team win the Sherborne 7s and capture the Bowl at the South West 7s.  

The U16 Boys showed consistency and quality, earning tournament victories at both the Warwick 7s and the KES Bath 7s.  

The Second VII Boys had a busy and competitive sevens schedule that included winning the Middlesex 7s, finishing runners‑up at Brecon 7s, and reaching the Plate Final at the South West 7s.  

The First VII Boys put in a standout performance to win the prestigious TSC 7s in Worcester, overcoming high‑level opposition across the day. They also won at Hampton 7s.  

We were delighted to welcome eight visiting schools for a fantastic afternoon of rugby in the Millfield 10s Tournament. Millfield entered two teams—Millfield Red and Millfield Green—both of whom delivered strong performances and contributed to what was a competitive and enjoyable festival of rugby.  

The prestigious Rosslyn Park Sevens event saw another set of strong performances from the Millfield teams. Highlights included a first ever Rosslyn Park for a U14 Girls team, who reached the quarter final, the U14 Boys reaching the final and a Cup victory for the U16 Boys.  

The Senior Squad put in an incredible effort to reach the final of the Sedbergh 10s event. 

In Ski Racing, it has been an excellent ski season for Millfield students. They have competed in races across the country on both dry and snow slopes, and took part in the Interschools Race in Verbier, Switzerland, in March. The week in Verbier resulted in four medals and some outstanding skiing from all students, including several who were experiencing their very first ski race on snow in the mountains. The team finished an impressive sixth overall out of 43 schools.  

Year 10 Nat S competed in Kitzbühel Austria, Serbia and Bosnia this term, representing GB in international races.  

Year 10 Amelia M took part in the Anglo-Scottish Alpine Championships 2026 in Verbier, the first major British Alpine event of the season. She also competed in the English Alpine Championships 2026 in Bormio, a selection race for future GB Alpine squad consideration. 

In Squash, Upper Sixth student Tamir W was been crowned the U17 champion at the US Squash Nationals, defeating the top players in his age group from across the United States. 

In Swimming, Millfield had many swimmers competing in meets across March. 17 students raced at the Edinburgh International meet, while an incredible 80 Millfield swimmers raced in the Team Bath Level 1 meet. 

The following athletes have qualified for the British Swimming Championships in April: Upper Sixth Ed B, Upper Sixth Ethan S-G, Henry G, Sophie D, Tilly C, Mikayla M, Megs H, Filip N, Reuben A, Lower Sixth Asta M, Frank L, Joshua B, Oliver M, Wilfred L, Skye S, Year 11 Xander T, Roc V O, Colton D, Kaden F, Emily H, Year 10 Charlie P and Year 9 Chloe M. 

Millfield were fourth overall at the National Arena League meet. 

Upper Sixth Filip N was first in the 17 and over 200m IM and 100m Breaststroke. Upper Sixth Megs H was third in the 17 and over 100m Freestyle. Year 11 Xander T was first in the 15/16 Yrs 100m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke. Year 10 Charlie P was first in the 15/16 100m Freestyle. Year 10 Henry F was third in the 15/16 100m Breaststroke. Year 9 JJ W was third in the 13/14 100m Breaststroke. Year 9 Owen B was second in the13/14 100m Butterfly. 

In the Male 13/14 200m Medley relay, the team of Year 9 Owen B, JJ W and Daniel S finished third. 

Male 15/16 200m Freestyle relay, the team of Year 11 Xander Tovey, Dmitrijs T 11, Year 10 Charlie P and Ray D-R finished second. 

In the 17 and Over Male 200m Medley relay, the team of Upper Sixth Filip N, Reuben A and Year 11 Colton D finished second. 

In the 13/14 Male 200m Freestyle relay, the team of Year 9 Owen B, Daniel S and Ollie G finished third. 

In the 15/16 Male 200m Medley relay, the team of Year 11 Dmitrijs T, Xander T, Year 10 Charlie P 10 and Henry F 10 finished first.  

In the 17 and Over Female 200m Freestyle relay, Upper Sixth Tilly C, Sophie D, Megs H and Year 11 Emily H finished second. 

In the 17 and Over 200m Freestyle relay, Upper Sixth Filip N 13, Reuben A, Lower Sixth Skye S and Wilfred Leigh finished third. 

In the 400m Mixed relay, the team of Upper Sixth Megs H, Lower Sixth Skye S, Year 11 Esme W, Year 10 Charlie P, Year 9 Jada Y and Owen B finished third. 

In Tennis, the Millfield Girls A Team were winners of the LTA National Schools Year 11-13 Regional Finals. The team included Upper Sixth Niamh M, Leah F, Lower Sixth Sofiia V, Bea S and Year 11 Valentina B.  

The Millfield Girls B Team finished in third place at the LTA National Schools Year 11-13 Regional Finals. The team included Lower Sixth Aleksija B, Anais M, Olivia G and Carolin M.  

Upper Sixth Hugo D was the Boys Singles Winner Millfield Tennis Annual Club Championships 2026. Lower Sixth Jason W was Boys Singles Runner Up at the Millfield Tennis Annual Club Championships 2026.  

Year 10 Veronika V was the Girls Singles Winner Millfield Tennis Annual Club Championships 2026. Year 8 Almendra C G was Girls Singles Runner Up Millfield Tennis Annual Club Championships 2026. 

In Triathlon, Upper Sixth Tom W became Junior (U20) National and British Sprint Duathlon Champion (run, bike, run), and he came sixth overall amongst the seniors (over 20).

From Millfield to the Mid-Atlantic: OM Rufus Lewis Takes on the World’s Toughest Row

Old Millfieldian Rufus Lewis (Walton House, 2015–2019) is preparing to take on one of the world’s most demanding endurance events: the World’s Toughest Row - Atlantic - a solo ocean row of more than 3,000 miles from San Sebastián de La Gomera to English Harbour, Antigua.

Rufus is set to race in December 2026, spending weeks at sea in a completely unsupported, self-sufficient crossing. Alone on the ocean, he will manage everything from navigation and weather to repairs, nutrition, and the mental challenge of isolation - all while rowing for up to 18 hours a day.
