The team contested the time trial or an outright A Final qualification, facing up against athletes who had been rowing almost daily for nearly three years. By contrast, the Millfield crew was highly inexperienced, consisting of three Year 9 rowers "rowing up" a year group, and all five athletes only picked up an oar for the very first time last summer. In Rugby, the Year 9 rugby team visited Bath Rugby’s training ground, where the boys took part in a session alongside Wellington College. The coaches spoke in detail about both on-field and off-field expectations, emphasising key attributes such as organisation, communication, commitment, attention to detail, intensity, and intent. This insight was particularly beneficial, as it helped the boys understand that success at higher levels of the game is driven just as much by character and mindset as it is by technical ability. Following this, the group took part in a practical training experience delivered by Bath’s academy coaches. They then moved inside to the indoor facility for a skills session, where they were coached at a very high level and exposed to professional-standard training environments and expectations.
