Sport Round Up - November

In Clay Shooting, at the Rugby Schools competition, the Millfield first team were victorious. The team included Upper Sixth Oliver Austin, Satya Singh, Will Hutchison and Lower Sixth Archie Monk. 

At the Marlborough Schools competition, the Millfield Ladies team finished in overall second. The team included Upper Sixth Matilda Wilkes, Year 11 Peggy Swankie, Rebecca Zhao and Mikaela Pearson. Peggy won the Ladies High Gun. The second team of Year 11 Toby Wellspring, Jed Roy-Assen, Theo Taylor and Charles Eyre came fourth. 

The Millfield Challenge event saw 17 schools and 160 shooters take part. The Millfield first team of Upper Sixth Oliver Austin, Satya Singh, Will Hutchison and Lower Sixth Archie Monk won the challenging A course layout. The Millfield second team, comprised of Upper Sixth Omran Baassiri, Ammar Abid, Lower Sixth Jack Eatch and Year 10 Henry Illingworth came second in the B course layout. The Ladies team of Upper Sixth Matilda Wilkes, Year 11 Mikaela Pearson and Rebecca Zhao won their competition. 

In Cross Country, Millfield hosted the Mendip Area Cross Country Championships, an important first step towards the English Schools Cross Country Championships. 140 runners from 11 schools took part across eight age group races. All Millfield students who participated are in strong contention to be selected to represent the Mendip Schools’ Area Team at the Somerset Schools Championships on Saturday 17 January. 

In Hockey, Upper Sixth Bella Hinde-Smith (U18) and Year 10 Josh Hinde-Smith (U16) have been selected for the England Age Group Programme for the 2025–26 cycle. 

In Karate, students from Millfield attended the Autumn Gasshuku at the Wincanton Dojo during October. Currently the squad are busy practising for their next belts, which includes a change to the fighting rules. Students will be allowed to use all aspects of their training, which will for the first time include groundwork, locks, holds and chokes, similar to MMA but more emphasis on self-defence. Captain Emma Martin has been invited to test for her 1st Dan (Shodan) Black Belt in March 2026. 

In Netball, the First Team were crowned at U19 County Champions. 

Students have been selected into Team Bath Development Programmes. Year 11 Ferne Pike, Lower Sixth Harriet Pickering and Year 11 Gracie Tubb are in the Team Bath Junior Player Development Program (PDP). Upper Sixth Olivia Doherty, Olivia Pitt, Isabella Lofthouse are in the Team Bath U19 National Performance League squad (NPL). 

In Rugby, Millfield teams took part in competitive block fixtures, including matches against Sedbergh and Cardinal Newman School from Argentina.

In Ski Racing, the Millfield ski team delivered an outstanding set of performances across both the National Schools Indoor and Outdoor Championships this season. In October’s Indoor Special Slalom, Year 10 Amelia Midgley secured a strong fourth place in the U16 girls’ category, while the boys dominated, with Year 10 Nathaniel Stringer taking first and Arto Jaccoux-Ikazawa third in the U16 field. The Senior Mixed First Team of Amelia, Ava, Nathaniel, and Alex also impressed with a third place finish.  

Momentum continued at the Outdoor Open Champs in Aldershot on 9 November, where Amelia claimed second in the U16 girls’ race, and in the U19 girls’ category Upper Sixth Coco He and Lower Sixth Anisha Oberreit placed second and third respectively. The team events showcased exceptional depth, with Senior Mixed Team A (Amelia Midgley, Alex Kim, and Arto Jaccoux-Ikazawa) winning first place, and Senior Mixed Team B achieving an excellent second. A fantastic set of results all round, highlighting skill, teamwork, and dedication across the squad. 

In Squash, the Millfield U19 Squash first team played three matches against Bristol Grammar School, King's College Taunton and Exeter College. Millfield won all three matches and now progress to the Regional Finals. 

The Millfield team consisted of Shunsaku Kariyazono, Gilad Wiegenfeld, Tamir Wiegenfeld, Naomi Wiegenfeld, and Pierre Joubert. 

A special mention goes to Year 9 Naomi, who is currently excelling on the European stage, and has represented her country at U19 level despite still being eligible for U15 competition. 

In Swimming, Upper Sixth Ethan Stubbs-Green won eight medals at OECS in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. 

Year 9 Jada Yankey competed in 18 events and finished the competition as the third best young swimmer overall at African Aquatics Zone 2 (Western and Central Africa) Championships in Accra, Ghana. 

In Gala 2 of the Premier division, the Millfield A team claimed first place, while the B team finished third.
