Sport Round Up - November 2021

In clay shooting, Millfield hosted their annual invitational shoot. Millfield entered six teams, Millfield A team, consisting of Upper Sixth Boris Findlay (captain), Alex Mayman, Lower Sixth Ivor Fothergill and Patrick Salisbury placed first. Millfield B team, consisting of Lower Sixth Kaikai Fan, Upper Sixth Tom Rogan, Year 9 Oliver Austin and Pierre Joubert placed second. Millfield ladies, consisting of Upper Sixth Charlotte Taylor, Lower Sixth Xanthe Clothier and Year 9 Matilda Wilkes, took the title of the ladies’ competition.

In cricket, Upper Sixth Jess Hazell has been reselected for a second year into the Western Storm Regional Academy for the 2021/2022 season.

Upper Sixth Barney Fitch, Aman Rao and Lower Sixth Thomas Stewart have been selected to join Somerset County Cricket Club’s ‘Potential Somerset Player Programme’ (PSPP).

Year 10 Lilly Hawkins has been selected onto Somerset Girls Emerging Player Program (EPP) for the 2021/2022 season.

Year 11 Archie Vaughan has been offered an academy contract with Somerset County Cricket Club.

Upper Sixth Joseph Eckland has been signed onto the Hampshire CCC Academy for the 2021-2022 season.

Year 11 Dominic Kelly has had his academy contract with Hampshire CCC extended for the 2021-2022 season. This is the third year that Dominic has been part of Hampshire Academy

In cross country, Millfield have made the National Cross Country Cup final in Newquay on 4 December.

Year 9 Macey Burge has placed seventh in the Regional Cross Country Cup with Year 9 Annabelle Suffield placing eight, Matilda Cowan placing 15th, Year 10 Bianca Gomez Velasco placing 27th and Year 9 Steffi Berndt De La O placing 43rd.

In cycling, OM Milly Tanner has won bronze at the World Championships.=

In equestrian, Year 10 Rupert Hyde competed in the British Show Jumping Seniors, Dodson and Horrell National Amateur and Veteran Championships. He qualified throughout the year locally both 85 & 95cm, the finals were 95 & 1.05cm. He also won the Dorset show second rounds.

In fencing, Upper Sixth Kelsey Woname met with Vice President of Ghana and Mr Mahadi and was presented with her achievers’ award.

Evie Colyer placed third at Newham Junior Series.

OM Beth Plant took silver at the Senior National Championships.

Coach Glen Golding has travelled with EIS and Disability Fencing to coach at the Pisa World Cup.

Year 11 Haleena Callaghan, Maisie Everett and Lower Sixth Sabrina Jones represented Great Britain on the European Cadet Circuit in Grenoble.

In football, the boys first team have made the quarter finals of the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) cup.

The girls first team are into the third round of the English Schools Football Association (ESFA).

Upper Sixth Theo Mara, Lower Sixth Ben Harcourt-Harrison, Ted Gibbs and Year 11 Arthur Nasta are all into the last round of trials for the ISFA team.

OM Tyrone Mings scored his first goal for England, helping them to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In golf, captain Gracie Mayo has signed for the University of Oklahoma.

Millfield team Upper Sixth Joss Lerwill, Dewi John, Lower Sixth Freddie Turnell, Josh Izod, Harriet Lockley and Hugo Wu won 3-0 at the HMC Foursomes v Kings Taunton.

Freddie Turnell has started training with the South West England Golf Union (EGU).

Harriet Lockley, Gracie Mayo and Dewi John have been training with Wales.

Joss Lerwill and Josh Izod are currently competing in the European Junior Open in Spain.

In gymnastics, Year 11 Ilaria De Neiva Konig has won GB silver at the Acrobatic Gymnastics British Finals, competing in the Women's Youth Trio category.

In hockey, the U14A girls’ hockey team have become the Tier 1 EH GU14 Regional Champions. The team played a series of fixtures on campus and have now qualified to compete in the National finals in February.

The girls first team have made the last 16 of inspiresport Independent Schools Hockey Cup (ISHC) and the girls U15 side have made the quarter finals.

Boys first team have won their England Hockey T1 league game vs Warminster.

Lower Sixth Anna Edwards and Ollie Mallett have made the next stage of the National Age Group (NAGS) programme.

Upper Sixth Lottie Wakeham-Dawson is training with the Great Britain Elite Development Programme (EDP). 

OM Vicki McCabe has been selected for Great Britain U21 selection for the Junior World Cup, in South Africa this December.

In modern tetrathlon, Year 10 Bianca Gomez Velasco, Year 9 Steffi Berndt De La O and Annabelle Suffield won gold in the Modern Tetrathlon team event.

In netball, Year 11 Sarah Long has had her first international cap for the Isle of Man. Playing in the Europe U21 Championship for the U21 squad at the age of 15.

OM Ella Porter also got her first U21 Wales cap at the same competition.

Year 11 Sarah Bugeja has been selected for Switzerland’s U17 long squad for the 2021-22 season. Read more.

Millfield U14, U16 and U19 teams are through to the regional school finals in January.

12 students have been selected for the Somerset County Netball Academy.

Performance Development Coach Ellen Morgan made her first pre-season Superleague appearance for Team Bath.

In rugby, Millfield players took part in a workshop ran by the Non-perfect Dad on the theme of listening and sharing. Senior boys shared their experiences of rugby at Millfield with U16 and U15 players.

OM Rhys Davies has been selected for the Welsh squad.

OM and former Head Boy Josh Bayliss made his debut for Scotland.

The U15 Boys team consisted of Year 9 Kai Kiernan, Cai Lewis, Jake Servan-Smalley and Prep pupils Rayaan and Shunsaku.

The U19 Girls turned out a stellar performance, consisting of Upper Sixth Lily Thomas, Eva Ford, Year 11 Amelie Haworth, Year 10 Soha Khatri and Prep pupil Renee.

The U19 Boys also put in an impeccable performance, the team consisted of Upper Sixth Toby Smith, Harry Scriven, Alex Welton, Amnan Sevany, Year 11 Ayaan Vaziralli, and a Prep pupil Shunsaku.

In swimming, Millfield swimmers competed at the Swim England Southwest Regional Short Course Championships held at Millfield School 5-7 November. Congratulations to Upper Sixth Tamryn van Selm who made a new school record in the 100m Freestyle (54.49) and 200m Freestyle (1.58.49) and Lower Sixth Alex Painter in the 100m Individual Medley (56.46).

In the junior events, congratulations to students who won gold. Lower Sixth Conor Cherrington 100m Individual Medley, Elliot Woodburn 50m Breaststroke and 100m Breaststroke, Solomon Williams 400m Freestyle, Kirsten Powell 100m Individual Medley and Matthew Cairns 200m Butterfly.

Bronze: Year 9 Sophie Davies 100m, 200m and 400m Freestyle events, Year 10 Annabel Chan 100m Backstroke, Lower Sixth Kirsten Powell 50m Breaststroke and 100m Backstroke, Lower Sixth Isabella Woollard 200m Backstroke, Year 10 Peter Yu 50m Breaststroke and Lower Sixth Matthew Cairns 200m Backstroke.

In the senior events, congratulations to students who won gold. Upper Sixth Evan Jones 200m Individual Medley and Tamryn van Selm 100m and 400m Freestyle.

Silver: Isabella Renwick 100m Backstroke and Lower Sixth Alex Painter 100m Individual Medley.

Bronze: Lower Sixth Elena Pedersen 50m and 100m Backstroke, Upper Sixth Evan Jones 400m Freestyle and Lower Sixth Alex Painter 50m Freestyle.

Millfield swim team competed in round two of the national league in Keynsham and placed first.

They also competed in the annual English School Secondary School Relay Finals at the London Aquatics Centre. They competed in 12 events, four junior relays (Years 7 and 8), four intermediate relays (Years 9 and 10) and four senior relays (Year 11 and over). Congratulations to the senior boys who achieved a national record of 1.42.29 in the Medley Relay and a school record (1.34.46) in the Freestyle Relay. Senior girls recorded a school record time (1.46.56) in the Freestyle Relay and placed second in the Medley Relay. Intermediate boys placed second in the Medley Relay.  They also achieved a national record time of 1.40.31 in the Freestyle Relay, as did the intermediate girls (1.49.91). Intermediate girls placed second in the Medley Relay. Junior girls won gold in both the Freestyle Relay and Medley Relay and the junior boys placed sixth in their Medley Relay.

Fifty students have qualified for the Swim England Winter Championships to be held in Sheffield 3-5 December. Congratulations to Year 9 Meghan Higgs and Sophie Davies. Upper Sixth student Hannah Cromhout completed a 10km charity swim in aid of Young Minds and Stem4, raising £1,420.

OM Cameron Kurle has been selected for the Fina World Short Course Championships, held in Abu Dhabi, in December.

OM Stephanie Clutterbuck has won the Ironman Portugal-Cascais 2021 competition.

In tennis, the Year 9/10 boys teams were convincing winners in their age group at the South West regional playoffs in the National Schools Championships. Congratulations to the team, Year 10 Simon Hegarty, Year 11 Devon Dominguez, Max Griffiths and William Thomas who have qualified for the National Finals which will be held in Bolton from 4-5 December.

Girls team finished in third place in the South West playoffs, congratulations to Year 10 Charli Beeson, Stella Grech, Izzy Knott and Year 11 Sarah Long.

Year 9 Joshua Craze and Charlie Ruffell overcame the second seeded pair to reach the doubles semi-finals at the Liverpool U14 international event.

Joshua Craze reached the last round of 16 in the boys’ singles at the same event.

Year 9 Hugo Dunn has reached his first international singles quarter-final at the Liverpool U14 International and has reached the doubles quarter finals at the same event.

Year 9 Rafe Samuel reached the main draw of the boys’ singles at the Liverpool U14 International.

Year 9 Calum Jessett has won the U18 Winter Regional Tour event in Swindon without dropping a single set in the tournament.

In triathlon, 17 students from the team took part in the Street 5k.

Millfield students receiving their A level results 2022

Millfield leavers are celebrating their A level and BTEC results today following the return to exams this year, with grades higher than in 2019 as predicted. The 284 students in this year’s Upper Sixth cohort have displayed exceptional resilience, hard work and determination. 

Millfield twins Elena and Rosa have achieved outstanding identical A level results

Millfield twins, Elena and Rosa Launder, both achieved top identical results today.

The eighteen year-old sisters, who live in Somerton, Somerset, gained an outstanding three A* grades each, and are separating for the first time since birth and heading to opposite ends of the country.
