In athletics, Millfield athletes have competed in the England Combined Events Championships in Manchester last month. Lower Sixth Lucy Fellows finished in second place in the heptathlon. In the boys decathlon, Lower Sixth Toks Akanbi-Mortimer finished in 12 place overall and placed first in the Welsh Championships. Year 10 Stefan Chirita finished second in the Octathlon with a personal best of 3244 points.

Four Millfield athletes have competed at the Manchester International. The British U18 and U20 teams included Upper Sixth Sophie Hamilton, Lucy Chalmers and Harry Barton in Lower Sixth while recent leaver Seb Clatworthy represented Wales. Read more.

In clay shooting, Millfield’s team enjoyed a successful year, winning every competition they entered. The 35 strong squad won four inter-school fixtures with the final fixture being the Independent Schools National competition held at the prestigious Holland and Holland ground, in Northwood, where they beat last year’s winners Strathallan, and also beat Eton, Harrow and Bryanston. In cricket, Millfield cricket have hosted two international training camps. Ireland cricket men’s team had a five-day training camp at Millfield ahead of their T20 series, watch more here. Upper Sixth student Gabriel Gallmann-Findlay has been selected for Scotland U19s to play in their ICC World Cup Qualifiers in La Manga, Spain.

Upper Sixth Barney Fitch made his 2nd XI debut taking 4 wickets vs Hampshire CCC. Barney has had an exceptional summer with the county in age group cricket. 

Upper Sixth Luke Pearson-Taylor made his professional debut for Somerset CCC vs Northants CCC 2nd XI taking 4 wickets in Somerset’s win.

Upper Sixth Joseph Eckland played in the last 5 Hampshire CCC 2nd XI Championship games after a strong August in the Hampshire academy side.

OM Ned Leonard made his debut for Somerset in their county championship match vs Lancashire. This comes three weeks after he made his List A, white ball debut for Somerset in the Royal London One Day Cup.

OM Jamie Baird captained the MCC to a victory over an England Schools XI at Lords and was named Man of the Match after scoring a sensational 83.

Five Old Millfieldians played in the Royal London One Day Cup vs Nottinghamshire, congratulations to Lewis Goldsworthy, Sam Young, James Hildreth, Kasey Aldridge, and George Bartlett.

In equestrian, Millfield took first place in both the team and individual events at the prestigious National Schools and Pony Club Jumping Championships at Hickstead. Read more.

In fencing, all U17 and U21 fencers have returned to competition with fantastic enthusiasm, focus on progress development and a great squad mentality.

Lower Sixth student Sabrina Jones placed third at the Women’s Epee British Fencing Cadet U17’s Ranking event.

Congratulations to Lower Sixth Sabrina Jones, Year 11 Maisie Everett and Haleena Callaghan who have qualified for the U17 Cadet Great Britain Fencing Team, competing in the European Cups in Belgrade, Serbia from 23 - 24 October, and Heidenheim, Germany from 30 – 31 October.

Old Millfieldians have also seen recent success. David Williams took third at the British Fencing Junior (U20) Foil nationals and Jake Hurst placed eightieth. Hal Jones placed third at Men’s Epee British Fencing Ranking Event with Jacob Mitchell placing 14th.

In football, Lower Sixth goalkeeper Catrin Thomas has been selected for the Wales U17 squad.

Year 10 Azarni Callwood played in a tournament for the British Virgin Islands over the summer.

In golf, Upper Sixth Dewi John represented Wales U18 in the Boys Home Internationals. He also finished seventh in the SGF trophy and runner-up in the Somerset Boys U18 championship.

Upper Sixth Joss Lerwill reached the semi-finals of the Plate for the Welsh Boys U18 championships.

Upper Gracie Mayo reached the quarter finals of the British Ladies Amateur and the British Girls U18 Championship, and the semi-finals of the Wales U18 Girls Championship. She has represented Wales in the Ladies European Team Championships and Wales U18 Girls in the Home Internationals. She placed joint fifth in the Harper Salver, joint 23rd in the Helen Holm Scottish Womens Open Championship and 24th in the English Ladies Strokeplay.

Lower Sixth Harriet Lockley has represented Wales Ladies in the European Team Championships and Wales U18 in the Home Internationals. She placed joint fifth in the Harper Salver, qualifying 11th in the British Ladies Amateur. Harriet also finished 33rd in the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Championship, eightieth in the England U16 Championship and 18th in the English Ladies Strokeplay. She has been selected for the Great Britain and Ireland Junior Vagliano Team v Europe in the Netherlands in October. 

Lower Sixth Freddie Turnell finished runner up in the Scottish Boys U16 Championship. He has also finished joint third in the McGregor (England U16 Boys Championship), joint second in the SGU West of England U18 Championship, seventh in the Midland Boys U16 Championship and fifth in the West England U16 Championship.

Upper Sixth Sam Pepler has finished seventh in the Dorset Boys U18 Championship.

Old Millfieldian Harry Hall won the Wichita Open on the Koran Ferry Tour. Patience Rhodes won the English Girls Championships and Izzy Hopkins won the Wales Ladies Championships.

Several students have represented their county over the summer. Congratulations to Upper Sixth Jo Champion, Year 10 William Welsh, Samuel Hughes, Thomas Richardson, Lowen Stephens and Year 9 Luke Burbridge.

In hockey, Upper Sixth Ollie Mallett, Lower Sixth Maya Kendell & Anna Edwards have been selected for a National Age Group (NAG) Assessment for England Hockey.

Upper Sixth Jess Hazell, Lottie Wakeham-Dawson and Ollie Mallett have been selected to compete for England in the School Games.

Upper Sixth Ollie Mallett represented Wessex Leopards thirds in The Futures Cup, Adam Williams-Lewis represented Celtic Jaguars, Lower Sixth Florence Tuthill, Maya Kendell and Tilly Standen McDougal all represented Wessex Winners and India-Rose Owen represented Celtic Jaguars seconds.

In netball, Year 11 Sarah Long has been selected for the Isle of Man tournament. Read more.

Old Millfieldian Jemima Bugeja has been selected into the Swiss national team.

Millfield netballers Upper Sixth scholar Bella Valeur Adu, Lower Sixth scholar Izzy Mackenzie and external player, Ella Williams have been nominated to attend the England Roses Academy positional days. Read more.

A record number of 16 Millfield students have been selected for Team Bath’s Academy Development Centre (ADC), held at Millfield, for the second year running.

In outdoor adventure, 217 Year 9 students went to the Mendip Hills, taking part in the first camping activity weekend as part of the Nine at Millfield programme.

Eight Year 11 students completed their silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition at the River Wye, canoeing a total of 63km.

Year 10 bronze Duke of Edinburgh students camped at Kingweston and walked through the Mendips near Cheddar Gorge.

285 Lower Sixth students enjoyed their induction camp at Purbeck Valley Campsite in Dorset. They enjoyed bushcraft, axe throwing, archery, coasteering, rafting and jumbo paddle boarding.

In pentathlon, six athletes represented England in Laser Run at the Youth School Games. Year 9 Oliver Tomlinson, Steffi De La O, Year 10 Zac Cooper, Bianca Gomez-Velasco, Year 11 Verner Krynauw and Lower Sixth Sabrina Jones in Lower Sixth all competed. Read more.

Year 9 Oliver Tomlinson, Ed Rose, Daniel Pearce and Annabelle Suffield, Year 11 Verner Krynauw and Lower Sixth Sabrina Jones were selected to represent the South West region at the British Laser Run Championships at Solihull.

In rugby, after almost 18 months, rugby was back on the Sir Gareth Edwards and Butleigh pitches for the first time on Saturday. In the first two weeks of term over 150 students have been involved in fixtures. The teams have been fortunate to play fixtures against Blundell’s, Coleg Sir Gar and Sherborne with exciting, rugby played by not just Millfield, but their opponents too. The teams will play Sherborne again followed by Wellington on Saturday 9th October before the seniors travel to Ipswich for the St. Joseph’s Festival to pay tribute to the leavers of last year.

Upper Sixth Sam Harris is the latest to come through the production line of international rugby students. Sam made his international debut during the summer, playing for England vs Italy which took place on Millfield’s very own, Sir Gareth Edwards Pitch.

In shooting, Millfield has been crowned the South West Regional champions after winning their first competition. Read more.

In squash, Year 11 Amelie Haworth competed in the England Squash silver competition.

Old Millfieldians Mohamed Elshorbagy, newly ranked second in the world, made it to the semi-finals of the Net Suite Open in San Francisco. Marwan Elshorbagy newly ranked 5th in the world, made it to the quarter finals of the same competition.

In ski racing, Millfield Ski Team competed in the BISS National Indoor Championships. Year 10 Katie Saunders took bronze in the girls U16 category, Year 9 Felix Roberts took silver in the boys U14 and Upper Sixth Ciara Vogler took gold in the U21 girls.

In swimming, Year 10 Charlotte Hardy and Upper Sixth Evan Jones have been selected into the Scottish Performance Pathway. Year 10 Zac Cooper has also been selected for the Swim England National Development Squad.

Lower Sixth Matthew Cairns, Isabella Woollard, Conor Cherrington, Year 11 Lucy Buckingham, Zahra Davies, Adam Graham, Nicole De Pree and Year 10 Ivan Hart have been selected into the Swim England National Event Camps.

Year 9 Eva Lawson, Maia Delin, Megs Higgs, Joshua Ulyatt, Henry Guppy, Oscar Ryland-Day, Oliver Newing, Dexter Townsend, Year 10 Annabel Chan, Bianca Gomez Velasco, Francesca Woollard, Natasha De Pree, Sienna Franklyn-Miller, Lauchlan Parrott, Adam White, Ewan Pedersen, Toby Jackson, Harrison Cox and Daniel Heath have been selected for the Swim England National Development Squad.

In tennis, Year 9 Charlie Ruffell has competed in the Road to Wimbledon Regional Finals. He battled against three players, who were ranked in the top 10 of the year group above him, playing on the prestigious courts at Wimbledon. Read more.

Lower Sixth Calum Jessett won the Somerset services to tennis annual award for 2021 after suffering an ankle injury. He has also had a successful summer, winning the U18 boys single, men’s single at the Somerset County championships and the U18 boys doubles with Lower Sixth Fin Edwards. Callum also won the open mixed doubles with Lower Sixth Francesca Davis and the men’s doubles.

Lower Sixth Francesca Davis won the women’s single event in the Somerset County Championships. She also competed in the G1 Women’s British Tour in Edgbaston, finishing runner up.

In triathlon, Upper Sixth Juliette Janne D’Othee placed second in the U18 Belgium Triathlon championships.

Lower Sixth Jasmine Caley and Innes Dunlop represented their regions in the school games held at Loughborough University, both finishing in the top two of their regions.

Lower Sixth Jasmine Caley came eighth in the British triathlon super series grand-final at Malory Park, Leicester.
