In Athletics, at the ESAA Combined Events Championships in Stoke from 21-22 September, Upper Sixth Edward Williams was 23rd in the Senior Boys Decathlon. Year 11 Tabitha Olivier was 33rd in the Inter Girls Heptathlon.
The following students were selected for the England Athletics Youth Talent Programme: Lower Sixth Lottie Quinn, Tom Webb, Zoe Allen, Emily Marshall and Andre Onyekwe.
Upper Sixth Eden Robinson was selected into the Welsh Athletics Pathway.
22 Millfield athletes represented Somerset Schools at the English Schools' Championships at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham from 12-13 July. Eight students claimed top eight finishes, with three students claiming medals in their events. Lower Sixth Tom Webb won silver in the Intermediate Boys 3000m, Upper Sixth Eden Robinson won bronze in the Senior Girls Long Jump, while recent leaver Lily Martin won bronze in the Senior Girls Discus. On top of that, four National Standards, nine Entry Standards and four personal bests were achieved across the event.
Upper Sixth Lewie Jones competed in the U18 European Championships in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, from 18-21 July. In Javelin, Lewie qualified for the final with a throw of 63.58m, before claiming an eighth place finish in the final with a throw of 63.52m. Lewie was also selected to represent Wales at the Manchester International in August.
Lower Sixth Eden Robinson won the England Combined Events Championships in Birmingham with 5597 points, which was a personal best and Millfield School record. Eden was also selected to represent Wales in Javelin and 4x100m at the Home Countries International, Eton during August, and to represent Great Britain at the World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru during the same month.
Lower Sixth Tom Webb competed for England Schools at the SIAB Schools International in Carmarthen, on 20 July. Tom finished second in the 3000m with a time of 8:32.61. On 26 July, Tom became U17 3000m Champion at the England U17 Championships in Birmingham. He was also 3000m Champion at the School Games.
Recent leaver Bellsie Honey came in seventh place in the 100m at the England U20 Championships in Birmingham. Bellsie was also selected to represent England U20 in 4x100m at Home Counties International, Eton on 17 August. Leaver Lily Martin was selected to represent England U20 in the Discus at the same event.
In Clay Shooting, Lower Sixth Oliver Austin participated in 12 national and regional competitions over the summer: Eight in Trap, three in Sporting and one All Round as well as a couple of local trap competitions. He added to his six county U21 Championships with a Southwest Regional U21 Championship in the All Round event. He got the U21 bronze medal in the UK Championship for the ‘Universal Trench’ Trap. He got his first cap for Somerset when the U21 team won the Inter County ABT Trap Championship. At the South West Region Inter County Sportrap competition, Oliver and his teammate Reuben were winners as part of the Somerset Junior (U21) team, achieving the best team total score.
In Cricket, the Girls' First XI lost to Bradfield College in the semi-final of The Cricket Paper National Schools 100 Ball Cup.
The Meyer’s XI lost to St Peter’s School, York in the U18 National Schools T20 Cup at Lord’s.
The Boys’ U15A team won the County Cup and then progressed through several rounds to play in the National U15 One Day Cup. The team played well yet lost out to a very good Scarborough College team on the day.
Upper Sixth Caleb Falconer scored his maiden Middlesex CCC 2nd XI hundred with a 130 vs Lancashire CCC 2nd XI in the 2nd XI Championship. Caleb followed this up with 230 vs Sussex CCC Under 18s three weeks later.
OM Archie Vaughan played for the England Invitational XI vs England U19s and Sri Lanka U19s in two 50 Over matches. Archie scored 85 in the game vs England U19s. He also helped the Somerset CCC 1st XI to the final of the Metro Bank One Day Cup with a combination of economical overs of off spin, a crucial innings to secure a run chase vs Worcestershire CCC 1st XI as well as important catches throughout the competition. Archie also made his First Class and County Championship Debut, for Somerset vs Durham CCC on Thursday 29 August.
OM Dominic Kelly represented England U19s vs Sri Lanka in the U19 ODI series. Dominic then played a pivotal all-rounders role for Hampshire CCC 1st XI in the Metro Bank One Day Cup. Dominic was a consistent run scorer with the bat and took both five wickets and a hat-trick in his county’s victory vs Derbyshire CCC 1st XI.
Year 11 Louie Lawrence became the youngest ever Meyer’s XI centurion with a magnificent 147 vs Hampshire U18’s for the Meyer's XI. Louie was then selected to play in the ECB U15 Regional Festival (known as the Bunbury Festival) scoring 76 in the London and SE’s game vs the Midlands.
Upper Sixth Finn Kelsey scored his maiden County Age Group 100 for Somerset vs Cornwall U18s, with an innings of 105 not out.
Upper Sixth Harry Fairchild scored 101 for Dorset U18s vs Cornwall U18s in the three-day County Championship.
Year 11 Noah Lewis-Jones also represented Millfield at the Bunbury U15 Festival, playing for the South and West team. Noah was voted as the top spinner in the event by the Regional Coaches. Noah played consistently for the Somerset U18s team throughout summer, which is a great achievement.
In Equestrian, Year 10 Vaasvi Khaitan represented India and won Gold at a prestigious FEI International Competition in Germany.
Year 11 Agatha Stamper and Year 10 Jack Guppy won their respective classes at the Cotswold Cup Unaffiliated Eventing qualifier at Pontispool Equestrian Centre, qualifying for the Championship.
Millfield teams attended the National Schools Equestrian Association showjumping at Moreton Equestrian Centre. The 0.80cm team of Lower Sixth Mariella Frost, Amber Moxon, Year 11 Alice De Fonclare, Max Bonney, Year 10 Jack Guppy and the 1m team of Year 11 Agatha Stamper, Bella Steer-Love and Year 10 Elsa Weaver both placed second qualifying for the National Championships in October.
Lower Sixth Amber Moxon was second and Year 11 Bella Steer-Love were fourth in the 1.10m class, both achieving individual qualification for the National Championships.
Year 10 Lola Spooner was selected for the U16 British Showjumping squad, winning their first England Competition in July. It was very competitive and to qualify she came second out of 100 riders.
Year 11 Mimi Woodliffe qualified for and competed at the British Eventing International Youth Championships at Bishop Burton in the summer, as well as the Hickstead NSEA Showjumping and Pony Club Eventing Championships.
In Golf, Lower Sixth Abigail Moore and Year 11 Ffion Lockley represented Somerset Ladies in the South West County Week in Perranporth, Cornwall, playing well but just missing out on qualifying for the National Finals in September. Both Ffion and Abbie also represented Somerset Girls in the Inter County Championships at Cumberwell Park.
Lower Sixth Abigail Moore finished third in the Somerset Girls’ Championship at Enmore.
Year 10 Ashleigh Moore won the 18-hole nett Somerset Girls' Championship with a score of 64.
Lower Sixth Abigail Moore finished 28th in the Scottish U16 Girls’ Championship, 60th in the England U18 Girls’ Championship and won the Wedmore Ladies’ Club Championship by nine shots.
Year 11 Ffion Lockley won the Girls’ Gross at the High Post Junior Open. She also played in the Welsh U18 at Wenvoe Castle and finished joint fifth. Ffion played in the Welsh Ladies Championship at Royal St David’s and finished 24th.
Year 10 Bradley Lock won the Torrington Junior Open with a gross 70. He is also performing well in the Devon Junior League with several top 10 finishes in various events.
Year 10 Joss Monachello won the Ham Manor Junior Open with a gross 71. In the Douglas John Trophy, he finished 36th, with a gross 78, with the event being reduced to 18 holes due to a thunderstorm.
Year 10 Seva Johal won the British Masters Junior Open with a gross 79 (+9) at the Belfry and in doing so, has qualified to play in the Pro-Am of the British Masters (DP Tour). Seva won the U14 Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Junior Championship with 82 + 79 and goes to the Champion of Champions Final later in the year.
Year 11 Karoline Tochtermann finished sixth in the Northern German U16 Championship. In the German Team Championship, Karoline scored her best gross score of 73 (+1).
Year 10 Jack McMeekin won the Bath Junior Open, Enmore Junior Open and made his debut for Somerset U16's vs Glamorgan.
Upper Sixth William Welsh won the Salisbury and South Wilts Club Championship with gross score 69 + 74. In the SEBO he finished 18th with a four-round total of 293 (+7).
The following students have represented their respective counties in matches throughout the summer: Oli Hopkins, Jack McMeekin, Toby Morris, Luck Burbridge, Wills House Bradley Lock, Joss Monachello, Ffion Lockley and Abbie Moore.
In the round robin first round of the Swifts U18 National Foursomes, Millfield played Sherborne at Enmore, winning 3-0. The team was made up of Upper Sixth William Welsh, James Clemens, Lower Sixth Abbie Moore, Wills House, Year 11 Joss Monachello and Year 10 Jack McMeekin. In the U15 category, Millfield played Sherborne at Yeovil and won 2-0. The team was made up of Year 10 Seve Johal, Zane Bignall, Tate Sinfield-Day and Sophia Nesbitt.
Year 9 Tate Sinfield-Day won the Peter Green Trophy, leading the Somerset Junior Order of Merit. He was also named Players’ Player of Somerset Juniors for the second successive year.
Year 10 Jack McMeekin hit his first Hole-in-One on the 18th at Wedmore when playing in the Wedmore Junior Open. He also finished seventh in the JH Taylor Gold Medal at Burnham.
Lower Sixth Abbie Moore finished equal 14th in the Women's Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa.
Year 11 Joss Monachello won the Wedmore Junior Boys Open.
Year 11 Ffion Lockley won the Wedmore Junior Girls Open.
Year 10 Bradley Lock led the Justin Rose event at Saunton, scoring a gross 76 around the East Course.
The annual Millfield Golf Championship was played at Burnham, in testing conditions. It was great to have 20 students with single figure handicaps playing this year. The champion for 2024/25 is Zane Bignell, a Year 9 golfer playing off five and returning a very creditable winning score of gross 74 (+3). Runner-up and Junior champion was Year 11 Toby Morris (gross 75). Girls’ champion Lower Abbie Moore scored a gross 78 and nett champion was Year 10 Oli Hopkins (nett 63).
In Hockey, Upper Sixth Makenzy Beard played in the European Championships for Wales U21, during which they qualified for next year’s U21 World Cup.
Upper Sixth Joe Casey played for Wales U18 in the 8 Nations, while Charlotte Robertson played for Scotland U18 in the 7 Nations.
Upper Sixth student Jasmine Porter and Lower Sixth Grace Williams took part in an England U18 assessment.
Upper Sixth Jasmine Porter and Lower Sixth Charlie Milsom made their Premier League debuts for Clifton Robinsons Hockey Club. It is a fabulous achievements to play in England's highest domestic league while being so young.
The following played in the end of cycle Talent Academy Tournament in Nottingham: Will Morgan-Hughes, Charlie Lamprell, Reuben Lunt, Patrick Taylor-Ross, Skye Kay, Sammy Digby-Duell, Katie Harris, Lilly Holmes, Dinobi Okafir, Millicent Wright, Emily Franklin-Adams, Grace Wetherall.
Year 9 Tristan Thomas and Rosie Grant Peterkin played for the U14 UK Lions.
In Netball, Upper Sixth Hope Jordan won Bronze with Team Bath U17 NPL squad. Lower Sixth Olivia Pitt won Bronze with Mavericks U19 NPL squad at the Netball Performance League Tournament in Nottingham in July.
Upper Sixth Matilda Moore has been selected into the U19 squad for Northern Ireland.
In Modern Pentathlon, Sixth Form athletes hit the ground running with a busy start to the school year, taking on the world stage at the U17 and U19 Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Portugal and Lithuania.
Representing Great Britain in the U17 category, Lower Sixth students Reuben Cawley and Gordon Ballantyne gained invaluable experience as they continue their pentathlon journeys. Gordon competed in the Men’s Relay, finishing 18th, and narrowly missed out on the individual final in a challenging qualification group. Meanwhile, Reuben delivered a standout performance, securing seventh place individually after an impressive laser run and earning fifth in the Mixed Team Relay.
In the U19 category, Lower Sixth athletes Chloe Johnson and Sebastian Forrest also flew the flag for GBR. Sebastian placed 18th individually, while Chloe secured a top ten finish in ninth. Together, they capped off the event with a podium finish, winning bronze in the Mixed Relay.
Lower Sixth Chloe Johnson won gold in the U19 Girls Tetrathlon at the School Games, while Reuben Cawley was U19 Boys Tetrathlon Champion. Upper Sixth Sebastian Forrest was second in the U19 Boys' Mixed Relay and was fastest laser run. Upper Sixth Zac Cooper was sixth in the U19 Boys Tetrathlon and was fifth in the Mixed Relay. OM Gerard McGrady was eighth in the Boys Tetrathlon and also eighth in the Mixed Relay. Year 10 Ruby Bodman was fourth in the U17 Girls Tetrathlon and seventh in the Mixed Relay. Gordon Ballatyne was third in the U17 Tetrathlon and was Mixed Relay National Champion. Mateo Elliott was fourth in the U17 Boys Tetrathlon and second in the Mixed Relay. Valentina Kemp was 14th in the U17 Tetrathlon and third in the Mixed Relay. Kruze Frampton was U15 Boys National Tetrathlon Champion and was second in the Team Relay. Polly Warman was U15 Girls National Tetrathlon Champion was Team Relay fourth.
In Rowing, Year 10 Zara Barnett competed at the Henley Womens Regatta on the 21 June 2024. Her local composite crew finished 11th in the WJ16 4x event.
Millfield Rowing competed in their first British Junior Championships from 19-22 July, and had some fantastic results over the weekend including: Year 10 Zara Barnett achieved 10th place in the WJ16 4x event and 16th place in the WJ15 2X event; Upper Sixth Lucy Buckingham U6 Year 10 Lottie Godsell had a podium finish, winning silver medals in the Womens Beginner 2x event.
Millfield OMs produced incredible performances at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Rory Gibbs won gold with the Mens’ Eight, Helen Glover won silver in the Womens’ Four and Annie Campbell-Orde won bronze in the Women’s Eight.
In Rugby, Winscombe U18 Women hosted Netherlands U18 Women at Millfield, playing on the Sir Gareth Edwards pitch, Lower Sixth Sereana Matebalavu represented Winscombe in the fixture. It was a dominant display by the Dutch however a great experience for Millfield Girls’ Rugby.
As part of the MBA programme a group of senior rugby players from Millfield go weekly to support the ‘Growing Happiness’ allotment that grows food for local foodbanks.
Millfield Rugby Seniors attended a pre-season camp in Tignes, France. Watch a video of the trip here.
House matches were played out before Exeat, with Holmcroft winning the junior event and Mill House winning the senior event.
In Swimming, at the Aquatics GB Summer Championships in July, Millfield produced a record medal haul of 45 medals. Of particular note, Upper Sixth Charlotte Hardy claimed silver in both 50m and 100m breaststroke, Year 10 Colton Dorffeld claimed silver in the 50m butterfly with a new school record, Year 11 Jose Rodriguez claimed gold in the 50m breaststroke with a new school record, alongside five other championship medals, Year 10 Kaden Frampton claimed silver in the 200m, 800m and 1500m freestyle, Upper Sixth Lauchlan Parrot claimed silver in the 100m freestyle, Lower Sixth Megs Higgs claimed silver in the 50m freestyle, Upper Sixth Sienna Franklyn-Miller claimed silver in the 50m freestyle, Lower Sixth Sophie Davies claimed silver in the 100m freestyle, Upper Sixth Toby Godsell claimed gold in the 50m backstroke alongside four other championship medals, Year 11 Wilfred Leigh claimed gold in the 200m individual medley and a new school record alongside five other championship medals. Finally, Year 10 Xander Tovey claimed a British age group record and gold in the 200m freestyle alongside six other championship medals.
At the Swim England National Summer Meet in August Millfield claimed five medals, with notable performances from Year 11 Oliver Murray claimed gold in the 100m freestyle and Upper Sixth Zac Cooper who claimed silver in the 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle.
At the Olympic Games in Paris, swimmers associated to Millfield claimed four medals with OMs James Guy and Kieran Bird claiming 4 x 200m relay gold and performance squad member Matt Richards claiming gold in the same relay event, plus silver in the 200m freestyle.
At the Swim England National Open Water Championships in July, Year 10 Kaden Frampton claimed silver in the 3000m event.
In Triathlon, September saw the final round of the Super Series at Mallory Park and the crowning of the overall Super Series winners for 2024.
Upper Sixth Annabelle Souter finished 3rd overall in the series and raced her first ever European Championship.
Lower Sixth Tom Webb finished 15th in the race and 12th overall in the Super Series for 2024 with a blisteringly fast run.
Year 11 Jacob Wright attacked on the bike and came into the run in first place.
Upper Sixth Nate Ground had an amazing final race of the season, finishing in 15th in his race with one of the fastest runs of the day.
Millfield triathletes now look forward to the first round of the English Schools Cup Cross Country Relays in the second week of October.
