Millfield student wins Mini London Marathon

Millfield athlete Tom Webb won the TCS Mini London Marathon on Saturday.

The 17-year-old tri-athlete and endurance runner, from Taunton, raced the most promising young athletes from across the UK to claim the top spot over the 2.6k British Athletics Road Championship course, finishing on The Mall outside Buckingham Palace.

Tom came fourth in the 2022 Mini London Marathon and was determined to take the top spot this time.

The England Athletics talent pathway athlete, whose running career started with Junior Parkruns in Taunton, said: “I’m absolutely buzzing at this win. I knew I had it in me as long as everything went to plan on the day which isn’t guaranteed in highly competitive races. The atmosphere in London was electric and I had a lot of supporters on the sidelines cheering me on which really helped with the last push for the finish.”

Tom was delighted to receive recognition from triathlon Olympic gold medalist Alex Yee on social media after the event, who ran the London Marathon for the first time on Sunday and who competed in Mini London Marathons during his own early career.

“I was lucky enough to meet Alex at a 5k race last month” Tom said. “Following his career path and how he developed from a running background to become an Olympic Triathon Champion our countries best triathlete is an inspiration to me.”

Tom is competing in the British Triathlon Super Series for the third year running with the first race in May, in Llanelli, Wales.

The Millfield School student is heading to Italy this week (Thursday 1 May) to represent England in one of Europe’s premier road races, the Trofeo Opitergium U20 10k in Oderzo.
