Upper Sixth student becomes Youth Ambassador for mental health campaign

Millfield student Sophia Wilson has been selected to be a Youth Ambassador for a mental health campaign to address struggles amongst young people.

Sophia, in Upper Sixth, has been keen to share her passion in helping young people speak out about mental health alongside British charity guru, adventurer and organiser of the campaign Bernie Hollywood OBE. Bernie will be taking on the world's toughest rowing challenge and aims to bring hope to young people who have been battling with mental health issues as he raises funds and awareness for their struggles.

Bernie is taking on the Talisker Whisky Challenge – an incredible feat of 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean, in support of mental health charity Samaritans and British Rowing Charitable Foundation, LOVE Rowing. His journey across the Atlantic, in a one-man rowing boat, suitably named the ‘Boat of Hope’.

The impressive work Sophia has been doing for the campaign over the last year has been recognised and she has been given the role of Youth Ambassador for the charity. Sophia will attend the unveiling later this month and she will join the campaign team in visiting schools in the UK and talking to children about mental health in the coming months, whilst juggling her A levels.

Sophia said, “Mental health in young people is incredibly important, especially after the last few years. Opening up and talking about issues we may be faced with is key and if I can encourage even one person to do this, I will be thankful. Too many young people suffer in silence, and it is our mission to help remove the stigma around mental health.”
