Learning Development Centre

"A major feature and strength of the school"

The Personalised Curriculum Centre

Millfield Prep’s Personalised Curriculum Centre (PCC) lies in the heart of the school. It comprises of both the Learning Development Centre (LDC) and English as an Additional Language (EAL departments). The department is staffed by experienced, specialist teachers, all with a huge understanding of additional educational needs and English as an additional language. The children are taught in small groups, developing their learning across the curriculum. Here at Millfield Prep, we see the strengths in every child. Each pupil is unique, and we ensure we support individual strengths, to enable pupils to compensate for their learning differences and needs. We see potential in every pupil and give them the opportunity to achieve their goals.

Ethos

Millfield Prep is a happy, vibrant, inclusive and active school. We recognise that learning may be challenging, and that children’s self-esteem suffers when they find learning difficult. However, we ensure that children achieve success, teaching from an individual’s strengths. Pupils learn how to learn, and as such, they feel in control of their learning, developing a positive, reflective outlook.

The PCC is a specialist department within the mainstream school, located in the centre. It is an integral part of the school, with many of our children enrolled to extra help and support. We believe every child is unique and encourage each one to aim high. Here at Millfield Prep, dyslexia is a strength and we work on this strength to build a pupil’s confidence. We also acknowledge the value to the school in enrolling pupils whose first language is not English and provide a personalised plan for them to develop their English and access mainstream classes.

Curriculum

The PCC Department is a purpose-built teaching area designed to implement multi-sensory programmes, which train and develop areas such as visual and auditory perception, discrimination and processing, as well as memory, thinking and reasoning skills. Pupils pursue programmes to develop their reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension, their grammar and vocabulary. However, more than this, pupils are taught to remove barriers to learning and know how to use their strengths to learn across the curriculum, developing their learning skills for life.
