Ten Tors
The Ten Tors Challenge is an annual event held in early May for 2,400 young people in the South West. It is organised and ran by the British Army on Dartmoor. It starts and finishes at Okehampton Camp, where teams of six complete a 35, 45 or 55 mile route, dependent on their age and ability. Participants are expected to be self-sufficient from the start at 7am on the Saturday until they return by the 5pm deadline on the Sunday. If the whole team returns before the deadline they are awarded a team certificate as well as individual medals.
Training takes place in the Autumn and Spring Terms and requires students to commit to a number of day and overnight walks to ensure that they are fully prepared for the event. Participants need a thorough understanding of map and compass work, camp craft, first aid, safety procedures and teamwork.
