Abba, Keane and Adele hits showcased at 2020 Contemporary Millfield Musician of the Year finals

On Saturday 1st February students, staff and audience gathered for the Contemporary Final of the Millfield Musician of the Year Competition, 2020; adjudicated by Miss Sarah Graves, and Mr Peter Wood.

The first category to compete was POP. 2 – Guitar/Bass/Drums, Grade 7+. Up first was Luca (U6) who performed Schism by Tool on Bass. Up next, Connor (L6) performed on guitar. Following this, Rhys (Y.10) performed Reapers by Muse on electric guitar; whilst the final guitarist of the evening – Harrison (Y.11) played Drifting by Andy Mackee. Our final contestant was Kim (U6), playing The Sound of Musak by Porcupine Tree on Drums. The winners for this category were Rhys (Y.10), and Kim (U6) with joint first place.

The second category to be judged was VOC. 5 – Contemporary Voice, Year 9 and 10. The first singer to take to the stage was Ines (Y.9), who sang I Have a Dream by ABBA. Up next was Oyinkan (Y.10) who sang Don’t Watch Me Cry by Jorja Smith. Following this was Patrick (Y.9) who sang Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi. Chichi (Y.10) followed this with a performance of Somewhere Only We Know by Keane; whilst Eddie (Y.10) accompanied himself on guitar singing Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran. Up next, Amelie (Y.10) sang Someone Like You by Adele. The penultimate performance was by Charlie (Y.9) who sang Imagine by John Lennon; and the final contestant for this category was Eliza (Y.9) who sang Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi. The Winner for this category was Eliza (Y.9).

The final category in the Contemporary Class was VOC. 6 – Contemporary Vocal, Year 11+. Up first was Imi (Y.11), who sang When The Party’s Over by Billie Ellish. Following this, Eloise (Y.11) performed Omen by Sam Smith. Caity (Y.11) then took to the stage, singing My Mistake by Gabrielle Aplin. Next up was Tana (Y.11) who accompanied herself as she sang Skyfall by Adele. Tierney (U6) performed next, signing Remedy by Adele Atkins. Following this, Tabi (U6) sang Always Remember Us This Way by Lady Gaga; whilst Isla (Y.11) sang People Help the People by Simon Aldred. The penultimate performance of this category was by Honey (L6) who sang Thank You for the Music by Anderson and Ulvaeus. And to conclude this category, Paige (U6) sang You’ve Got a Friend by Carol King. The winner for this category was Caity (Y.11)
