German Sixth Form students explore Zürich over half term

This year’s sixth form German trip led five Millfield Lower and Upper Sixth students to contemporary, cultural and vibrant Zürich, Switzerland’s largest city, to experience Swiss German and culture at first hand.

All three days in Switzerland were packed with a varied and busy programme. The students visited Zürich’s Old Town, its famous Bahnhofstraße, went on a fun paddle boat trip on Lake Zürich and had a walk up to Uetliberg which offered the group a spectacular view over the lake, the Alps and the city itself. They also completed a devilishly tricky escape the room challenge and put their football knowledge and skills into practice when visiting the Fifa World Football Museum. The group also did not miss out on a chance to try out typical Swiss Rösti, bratwurst or Zürcher Geschnetzelte at Zeughauskeller, Sternen Grill or the Rathaus Brauerei.

Another highlight was our day in the magnificent city Luzern where we got to know more about Swiss architecture and art by visiting the stunning Old Town and Luzern’s Museum of Art, which enabled us to take back lots of case studies for the important ‘art and architecture’ unit of the course. In the evening, the group visited the impressive Luzerner Theater where we saw the brilliant production of ‘Der Besuch der alten Dame’, a play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, which is the set text studied at A level. The play was a great success and gave us plenty to talk about on the train back to Zürich, as it was a truly unique take on the classic work of literature.
