Millfield 23 selected for 2022 Commonwealth Games

Millfield School have received 23 selections for this year’s Commonwealth Games, so far.

The 22nd Commonwealth Games will take place in Birmingham between Thursday 28 July and Thursday 8 August, featuring some of the best athletes from around the world.

Millfield’s 23 selections exceeds the 14 that they had for 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia, where they picked up a total of nine medals, including six silvers and three bronzes.

Millfield’s 23 selections are made up of six current students and staff and 17 Old Millfieldians.

Upper Sixth swimmers Evan Jones and Tamryn van Selm have been called up to represent Team Scotland and Team England respectively, while Year 11 student Jade Phiri will be representing Zambia in the pool. Millfield Director of Swimming Euan Dale will head to Birmingham as a coach for Team England, and will be joined by Physical Prep Lead Daniel Waddingham. Millfield Director of Netball, Jenna Adamson, has been called up as a coach for Team Wales.

A further seven OMs will be representing their respective nations in the pool in Birmingham. Double Olympic champion James Guy will be joined by Brodie Williams and Cameron Kurle in the Swim England team. Kieran Bird will swim for Wales, Emma Harvey for Bermuda and Tatiana Tostevin for Guernsey, while Imara-Bella Thrope will represent Kenya, 40 years after her father Conrad Thorpe swam for Kenya in the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia.

OM Jazmin Sawyers will fly the flag for England in athletics for the third time at the Commonwealth Games. OMs Hannah Cozens and Toby Reynolds-Cotterill will represent Team Wales in hockey, while Niall Caley will fly the flag for the Isle of Man in the Triathlon. Stuart Rushmere will represent Team England in hockey, while Alec Coombes will be in rugby sevens action for Scotland. OM squash players Peter Creed and Colette Sultana will also compete in Birmingham, representing Wales and Malta respectively.
