Millfield Cricket joins Joe Root’s Academy

Millfield is teaming up with England Test Captain Joe Root and the “R66T Academy”, in an exclusive deal which will bring the world-class cricket programme to Somerset. The partnership creates the opportunity for young players from across the UK to attend the R66T academy at the school’s facilities in Street, Somerset, for courses during the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays.

Millfield’s highly qualified and experienced coaching team will assist R66T Academy Lead Coach, Shaun Seigert across the three-day courses starting at the end of June (29th -1st July).

R66T Academy players will have access to Millfield’s new multi-million pound, industry-leading Indoor Cricket Centre launched in early 2020, which features new PitchVision technology on three lanes, a state of the art 4G fielding area, three adaptable bowling and batting surfaces, as well as five nets and an expansive 22 metre run-up as well. The participants will also practice on the iconic Millfield Cricket Pitch and excellent grass nets.

The R66T Academy was launched by England Cricket captain Joe Root and his father as a not-for-profit organisation that sees all proceeds reintroduced back into grassroots cricket.

Millfield is one of the finest cricketing schools in the UK, with 17 teams in active competition against schools across the South West (13 boys and 4 girls). Millfield has a thriving girls’ programme with two squads (U15s and Senior) which includes numerous county fixtures and matches against County Cricket Club Academies from Somerset, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Glamorgan and various university teams.

Shaun Siegert, Head Coach at R66T Academy, says, “I’m excited to be bringing a snapshot of the High Performance Programme that I developed with Joe Root, 27 other International and over 100 First Class players during the last 13 years. This programme is relevant to any player looking to develop, and take more control of their game, not just now, but into the future. I’m looking forward to coming to Millfield, a leader in cricket in the UK, and working with young cricketers from around the UK.”

There will also be opportunities for Millfield pupils and coaching staff to attend the R66T Academy Tour which heads to India each Easter. Every participant who signs up for the R66T Academy at the end of June will receive access to the R66T Academy Coaching App. The interactive app is a magnificent resource for any aspiring young cricketer.

Millfield has a highly qualified coaching team led by Director of Cricket Mark Garaway (ECB Level IV Tutor/Assessor), the former England Assistant Coach and Performance Director of Irish Cricket. Dan Helesfay (ECB Level III, Assistant coach to 2018 Kia Super League Champions, Surrey Stars) and Jack Moore (ECB Level III & Somerset Age Group Coach) complete the team as Assistant Coaches. The school have recently added former Northants batter, David Roberts (ECB Level III, Somerset Women’s Head Coach) and Kieran Peters (ECB Level III) to their extended cricket coaching team.

Millfield’s Director of Cricket, Mark Garaway says, “We are delighted to bring world-class cricket coaching to Millfield with Joe’s fantastic training academy. We can’t wait to develop our relationship with Joe, his brother Billy (Glamorgan CCC Batter) Shaun Seigert and Joe’s father, Matt, and to unlock the potential of the Joe Roots of the future right here in Somerset. The combination of the R66T Academy being held in our world leading cricketing facilities is an exciting prospect for any young and aspiring cricketer.”

The partnership includes additional benefits for Millfield pupils. The R66T Academy High Performance Programme in Adelaide will become Millfield’s official Gap Year Cricket Programme Partner. Over the past eight years, 15 Millfield graduates have headed to Australia to work with Shaun Seigert during their Gap year between A levels and University/Professional contracts with counties.

The course will be available for players with good levels of hard ball experience from U12 to U16 age groups.
