Millfield footballer Lily Macfarlane has been selected for the Yeovil Town Ladies U16 academy.
After being scouted at a training session, Year 10 Lily will be training alongside the team and coaches in preparation for fixtures against other academy clubs. Left-footed winger Lily will join Year 11 Clarissa Jackson who has been training with the U16s since September 2019. The Yeovil Town Academy was founded to develop and nurture young talent in football, providing them with elite coaching opportunities, support and advice.
A boarder at Millfield since September 2019, Lily is currently studying for her GCSEs. She says “my goal is to stay at Yeovil Town and Millfield, I hope to apply for a soccer scholarship paired with science at an American university. In the future I would like to pursue a career in football and would be honoured to play for the Lionesses one day!”
Lily’s selection shows the sport’s growing popularity at Millfield where the school has a dedicated, full time girls football coach, Dani Rodriguez.
Dani says: “It is fantastic and very well-deserved that Lily has been offered a place in the Yeovil Town Ladies U16 squad. Lily is a very talented and hardworking player, she is a great asset to the development of the Millfield Girls U15 team, as well as Millfield Girls 1st team. We are very confident that more players like Lily, as well as the players currently playing for ISFA national teams, will have the chance to live great football experiences.”
Girls football has had further recent successes, Millie Quaintance and Gia Sundaram represented the U18 Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) in a game at St George’s Park in December, both have been selected as part of the squad for the next match in Edinburgh on Saturday 1st February. Year 10 Lauren Pickup and Year 11 Clarissa Jackson also represented ISFA in an U16 game against English Schools Football Association earlier this month, which was hosted at Charterhouse School in Surrey.
Yeovil Town signed former Millfield student Tom Whelan last summer as well as OMs Reuben Reid (now of Cheltenham Town) and Ben Nugent (defender at Stevenage). A high percentage of footballers go on to play professionally and other credible OMs include Lawrie Wilson (Ebbsfleet United), Alan Robertson (Stellenbosch FC, South Africa) and notably Tyrone Mings who made his England debut in Summer 2019.
This is the first year that Millfield has offered Year 9 girls football as a main sport option. There are plans to put in place a full-time girls football programme which would involve the inclusion of further team sessions, futsal, video analysis, athletic development and gym sessions. Millfield’s coaches would also like to run sessions at Millfield Prep to grow the girls knowledge and expertise from a younger age.
