Millfield sailing pair qualify for World Championships

Millfield sailors Maia Delin and Vanja Ramm-Ericson have qualified for the World Sailing Junior Championships in Germany.

Maia and Vanja qualifed after placing second in the Juniors Gold Fleet at the UK RS Feva National Sailing Championships recently. The pair, currently ranked third in the world, have been competitively racing a double-handed RS Feva together since 2018 and joined the UK Regional South West Squad in 2020 which has been their pathway to national and international success.

Year 8 Maia from Bath and Year 9 Swiss Vanja are both full-time boarders at Millfield Prep and Millfield respectively. The sailing duo train together on Wednesdays and Sundays in Weymouth via Millfield’s Sailing Programme with the Andrew Simpson Foundation.

Maia said, “Mr Maxwell and Mr Churchill have been very supportive of our training and given us flexibility between the senior and prep groups. We have been able to use our own boat and continue training every Wednesday which has been very helpful.”

Vanja said, “We both have future ambitions to aim for the Olympics in our sailing careers and hopefully represent our country in the future. One regatta at a time!”

Millfield’s Sailing programme works closely with the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and Chew Valley Lake to provide equipment and specialist coaching. Sailors at Millfield are able to get on the water twice a week, with students able to hire equipment or use their own boats. Students also utilise strength and conditioning training sessions with Millfield's expert coaches and sailing theory sessions on land, to better equip students once they are on the water.

The World Junior Sailing Championships are being held in Travemünde, Germany on 23rd July.
