Monday 27th January saw the Vocal Final of the Millfield Musician of the year competition. After nearly 6 hours of auditions throughout the week, fifteen candidates made it through to the final, adjudicated by tenor, conductor, and educator Mr Edward Goater.
The first category to compete was VOC. 1 – Classical, Year 9 and 10. Up first was Jasmine (Y.10) who sang Spring Sorrow by John Ireland. This was followed by Alex (Y.10) who still with a treble voice sang Silver Swan by Orlando Gibbons. The final two competitors for this category were Maya (Y.10) who sang Vega Luna by Vincenzo Bellini, and finally Chichi (Y.10) who sang The Bird’s Lament by R.R Bennett. The winner of this category was Maya (Y.10).
The second category to be judged was VOC. 3 – Musical Theatre and Jazz, Year 9 and 10. Special mention must go to Cecelia (Y.09) who made it through to the final but was unable to compete on the night. Once again, Jasmine (Y.10) was up first singing Home by Alan Menken. Following this, Teddy (Y.09) performed a very charismatic and natural performance of Chattanoogo Choo Choo by Harry Warren. The final two competitors were Maya (Y.10) singing the very powerful song On My Own by Schonberg; and Lola (Y.9) singing When I Look at You by Frank Wildhorn. The winner for this category was Lola (Y.9).
As the evening reached the half-way point, it was time for the Year 11+ categories. Up first was VOC. 2 – Classical, Year 11+. Maddie (Y.11) was first on stage singing It was a Lover by Madeleine Dring. The second candidate was Annabella (L.6) who performed a very plaintive rendition of O Led Me to Some Peaceful Gloom by Henry Purcell. The final candidate for this category was Harvey (U.6) who sang The Vagabond by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The winner for this category was Harvey (U.6).
The final category for the evening was VOC. 4 – Musical Theatre and Jazz, Year 11+. Up first was Maddie (Y.11) who sang By Strauss by George Gershwin. Up next was Ellie (L.6) singing She Used to be Mine by Sara Bareilles. The final two candidates were Freddie (U.6) who sang Why God, Why? by Schonberg, and finally Rowan (U.6) who sang Empty Chairs at Empty Tables by Schonberg. The winner for this category was Freddie (U.6).
