Sport Round Up - April-May 2022

In swimming, Year 11 Jade Phiri travelled to Lusaka, Zambia for the CANA Zone IV African Swimming Championships, winning gold in the 100m butterfly, 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle events. She also picked up silver medals in the 4 x 50m medley relay and 4 x 50m freestyle relay, while claiming bronze in the 100m freestyle event. Jade has been selected to represent Zambia at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. 

Upper Sixth student Evan Jones was included in Scottish Swimming's list of nominations to be considered for Team Scotland selection at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. 

Upper Sixth student Tamryn van Selm has been selected to represent Team England in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She will be joined by coaches Euan Dale (Team Coach) and Daniel Waddingham (Physical Prep Coach), alongside OMs James Guy, Brodie Williams and Cameron Kurle. 

OM swimmers Tatiana Tostevin (Guernsey), Imara Bella Thorpe (Kenya), Emma Harvey (Bermuda) and Kieran Bird (Wales) have been selected to represent their respective nations at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. 

Upper Sixth student Evan Jones and Lower Sixth students Elliot Woodburn and Alex Painter have been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in Bucharest, Romania. 

The Millfield swim team travelled to Ponds Forge, Sheffield to compete in the 2022 British Swimming Championships. Across the event, 75 lifetime best times were achieved, with 28 students reaching the finals in their respective events. Upper Sixth student Tamryn van Selm and Lower Sixth students Elliot Woodburn and Alex Painter all achieved senior school record times in four different events; Elliot and Alex were joined by Upper Sixth student Evan Jones in picking up junior titles across the weekend. Elliot also achieved two Great Britain age group records in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke. 

Millfield welcomed double Olympic Champion Lizzy Yarnold OBE onto campus, who delivered inspiring talks to our sports captains and coaches.

In netball, Director of Netball Jenna Adamson has been selected to represent Team Wales as a coach at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. 

In rugby, OMs Will Joseph and Mako Vunipola were called up to Eddie Jones’ England Rugby training camp in preparation for the upcoming game against Barbarians and their tour of Australia. 

In football, both the senior boys second team and the U14 boys team won the Somerset County Schools Cup. The girls senior team, girls junior team and the boys U15 were runners-up in the same competition.  

Year 11 Morgan Jones and Elena Martinez Chamorro represented ISFA in a match against Wales Schools Football Association. 

Upper Sixth students Ella Smith, Clarissa Jackson and Lower Sixth Maya Kendell all represented the ISFA U18 Girls National team in their win over Watford Women U23s. 

Year 9 Dimitar Aleksandrov received a call-up to join the U14 National team of Bulgaria for a four-day training camp in Sofia. 

Upper Sixth student Theo Mara and Lower Sixth student Ben Harcourt-Harrison have received their first international caps after representing the national Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA).

In Hockey, Year 9 Lilly May Holmes secured two England Hockey National titles with her team Knole Park, who won both the National Cup and the National Supra League.  

OMs Kitty Chapple and Becky Mantle represented England Hockey U21s alongside Lower Sixth student Anna Edwards in their recent three match test-series versus Belgium. 

In Sailing, Year 9 Maia Delin represented Great Britain at the ICLA Youth Easter Meet in Lake Garda, Italy.

Millfield sailor Lucy Davis qualifies for World Sailing Championships

Upper Sixth student William De Jaeger is in the GB National squad for the 29ers Typhoon Trophy in June. William finished fourth in 29er national ranking event and ninth in 29er nationals in Plymouth. He is currently progressing to 49er (Olympic class) and is preparing for the European and World Championships later this year. 

In modern pentathlon, Year 11 Gerard Mcgrady, Bianca Gomez-Velasco, Year 10 Stefan Chirita and Year 9 Tom Webb have been invited to attend the UIPM International Biathle in Maderia on the 28 June. 

Year 11 Gerard McGrady and Year 9 Tom Webb qualified for the European Championships in biathle, which will take place in Athens, Greece from 24-28 August this year. Read the full story here. 

Year 9 Annabelle Suffield placed 2nd and Oliver Tomlinson placed 5th in their respective age groups in the European triathle qualifier at Leweston School. They will join Year 11 Gerard McGrady and Year 9 Tom Webb at the European Championships in Greece. Year 10 Zac Cooper and Bea Kinnear are both reserves for the championships. 

In ski racing, Lower Sixth student George Black finished third at the end of season Great Britain National Giant Slalom Championships. George finished 3rd on the podium in the overall national championship race, and was Giant Slalom Champion in the U18 and U21 classes. As a result, he was awarded the Gordon Skiers Cup for being the top ranked U18 male the Palmer Tonkinson Trophy for being the first placed skier who was not in the British team. 

In cricket, Upper Sixth student Philippa Letchford was named as girls first XI captain.

Year 11 student Dominic Kelly was selected by Hampshire County Cricket Club for his first-class senior debut, where he took two wickets against a Sri Lanka Development XI. Dominic is the youngest player in Millfield’s glittered cricketing history to receive a first-class call-up. Read the full story here. 

Lower Sixth Reuben Du Toit scored an incredible 207 not out off 124 balls while representing the boys first XI in a match against Blundell’s School. 

In Outdoor Adventure, both the Year 9 and 10 teams completed the Ten Tors challenge on Dartmoor. 

In equestrian, Year 11 Freya Barry competed at the Blue Chip Winter Show Jumping Championships at Hartpury Arena, Gloucestershire.  

On Saturday 30 April, Josh Sully was champion in the Discovery Class at Dorset Showground, while Freya Barry achieved had a double clear in the 1.30m class. 

Lower Sixth student Hatty Kingsford won her 100 section at the BE Mendip Plains event. 

Upper Sixth Anna Crowe, Maeve O’Neill and Lower Sixth Lily Lingford Taylor represented Millfield at Stonar in the NSEA One Day event. Anna finished as fourth individual at the event. 

Millfield Riders have qualified for the British Show Jumping National Championships at Stoneleigh in August. Lower Sixth students Cisca Norris and Hatty Kingsford, alongside Year 9 Lexi Chaney, all contributed to these qualifiers along with riders from Millfield Prep School. 

OM Phoebe Locke who has been named as one of the Senior GB team for the home leg of the Eventing Nations Cup at the end of the month. 

In tennis, Year 9 Charlie Ruffell claimed his first ITF rankings points in the Wrexham Junior ITF event.

Year 9 Joshua Craze and Charlie Ruffell won the doubles title at the U14 Wrexham International TE event.

Lower Sixth student Francesca Davis won the National Grade 2 singles event in Wrexham, and was runner-up in the doubles.

In squash, Year 11 student Amelie Haworth has been selected to represent the England U17 team at the upcoming European Championships. 

In fencing, The Millfield fencing team travelled to the British Youth Championships in Sheffield. These students had qualified through their results earlier in the year at the regional south west championships. Some of the best results are as follows. 

Lower Sixth Renee Nassozi Kiggundu was third in the U18 Girls Sabre, Lauren Tang was seventh place in the Girls Foil, Year 11 Haleena Callaghan was second place in the U16 Girls Epee, Patrick Jackson was sixth place in the U16 Boys Epee, while Year 9 Evie Colyer was seventh place in the U16 Girls Foil. 

In fencing, Millfield students travelled to the Fencing Cadet and Junior World Championships Dubai, with Lower Sixth Lauren Tang taking part in the Womens Foil, Umar Badroel Rizwan in the Mens Foil and Renee Nassozi Kiggundu the Womens Sabre.

In athletics, the Millfield squad travelled to Yeovil for the Somerset County Athletics Championships. Over 50 athletes took part, with medals being secured across a large range of events. 

In the 110m hurdles, Upper Sixth student Harry Barton was crowned County Champion, while Ella Smith took a sprint double winning the 100m and 200m titles. 

The senior boys team claimed the Lutra Shield for their combined efforts. 

Year 11 Melissa McCusker and Year 11 Gerard McGrady both took gold medals respectively in the 300m and 400m events. 

Year 10 Venetia Mahony claimed the gold medal in the 300m hurdles, despite it being her first time competing in the event.

Year 9 student Gemma Tolputt was junior champion in both the 1500m and 3000m junior girls events, while Lois Moore won the junior girls high-jump with a personal best 1.59m, which places her in the top ten in the country for her age-group. Year 9 Sam Lumsdon took second place in his first-ever hammer throw competition. 

 Year 9 Sam Lumsdon took second place in the junior boy’s hammer throw with a throw of 24.53m in his first ever competition in the event. Year 10 Venetia Mahony competed in the 300m hurdles for the first time, and claimed the gold medal. 

In the Cambridgeshire Athletics County Championships, Upper Sixth Keira Gilman claimed gold in the 200m, breaking the championship record in the process with a time of 25.77 seconds. 

Millfield hosted the first round of the English Schools Athletics Cup. The event finished with the girls team on 439 points and the boys team on 393 points. Congratulations to the following students who put in impressive performances in their respective events: Year 10 Amalia Eneanya-Bonito, Venetia Mahony, Sengul Ceylan, Oscar Webb, Seva Kava, Kayo Adeniji and Year 9 Zoe Allen, Lois Moore, Sam Lumsdon, Samuel Geall, Daniel Pearce, Charlie Roebuck, Cai Lewis, Annabelle Suffield, Gemma Tolputt, Isla Miller, Tavie Thomas and Ari Kasunmu. 

Upper Sixth student Sophie Hamilton was selected to represent the Great Britain U20 team at the Loughborough International Event. 

The Millfield athletics team competed in the annual interschools athletics competition, which was hosted at the Millfield track. 

Lower Sixth Toks Akanbi-Mortimer, Year 9 Daniel Pearce and Zoe Allen claimed wins in the hurdles in their respective age groups 

On the flat, Year 10 student Sengul Ceylan ran 12.7 seconds to win the junior girls 100m event, while Kayo Adenji took home a new personal best and first place in 11.4s in the 100m.  

In the middle-distance events, Year 9 Annabelle Suffield won the 800m, while Gemma Tolputt claimed gold in the 1500m.  

In the senior girls 100m event, Upper Sixth Keira Gilman took first place, while Tottie Taylor was second. Upper Sixth Ella Smith followed suit with a 24.6s run in the 200m, winning valuable points for the team. Lower Sixth Ella Wintle then completed the set by taking the 400m gold. 

Lower Sixth Ernesta Danquah Amoah and Izzy Mackenzie took gold and silver respectively in the high jump, both clearing 1.55m. Lower Sixth Lucy Fellows produced her best jump in almost a year with a 5.93m jump.In the throws, Year 10 Amalia Eneanya-Bonito threw 11.5m to win the shot putt. Year 10 Oscar Webb continued his strong start to the outdoor season with an assured 1.75m high jump.  

In the relays, both the girls and intermediate boys teams collected gold medals in the 4x100m. Millfield ended the day as champions across both the girls and the boys’ events. 

A team of 63 Millfield students attended the annual Achilles relays meeting, which was was held at the Sir Roger Bannister track, Oxford.

OM Elise Thorner posted a time of 9 minutes 32.42 seconds in the 3000m steeplechase at the Payton Jordan Invitational, Stanford, California. This time beats the existing UK U23 national record — which had stood for ten years — by six seconds. It also ranks Elise as second in the US Collegiate rankings for the distance this year, ninth in US collegiate history and seventh on the all-time list for a UK female athlete. 

OM Ollie Thorner achieved a plethora of personal bests to gain a score of 7602 in the decathlon in Mt Sac, California. This score was just short of the Commonwealth Games qualifying score of 7750, and had Ollie briefly ranked as the number one senior decathlete in the UK, and 16th in the US collegiate rankings.

In golf, Upper Sixth Gracie Mayo finished third in the Irish Girls Championship, and claimed fourth place in the Womens event. Gracie also finished fifth in the Helen Holm Scottish Womens Championship. 

Lower Sixth student Harriet Lockley represented Wales Ladies, finishing as fifth individual in the Nations Cup. 

Year 11 Maddy Beeching was Berks Bucks and Oxon U18 champion. 

Lower Sixth Freddie Turnell finished 15th in the West of England stroke play event. 

Upper Sixth students Dewi John, Stanley Richardson and Freddie Turnell all took part in the Somerset U18 team who won the Four Counties event. 

The Millfield HMC team of Upper Sixth Harriet Lockley, Lower Sixth Hugo Wu, Josh Izod, Year 11 Freddie Turnell, Year 10 William Welsh and Thomas Richardson were crowned regional champions after defeating Sherborne School, and have now qualified for the National Finals, which will take place in June.
