Whilst Millfield Sport were unable to run a complete voting process for the Sports Awards 2020, we are delighted to announce a top 3 podium in four Awards. Congratulations to Sport of the Year: Cricket, 1st XI Football and Polo; Sue Woods Spirit of the Year: Annabelle Davis, Alice Sismanovic and Christian Willsher; Coach of the Year: Ben Boyd (Football), Kirsty Fontaine-Henley (Equestrian) and Alan Lerwill (Athletics); Support Staff of the Year: Lee Carroll (Kingweston Groundsman - Football), Ellie Devine (Admin Manager - Swimming) and James So (Athletic Development Coach – Netball).

Save the date for the 2021 Millfield Sports Personality of the Year which will take place on Friday 28 May.

In Athletics, Lucy-Jane Matthews has been named as the third best British Junior Female Athlete with Athletics Weekly.

In Clay Shooting, a group of clay shooting students attended an Olympic Shooting Day in High Wycombe, with the BASC, The British Association of Shooting and Conservation.

In Dance, students took part in the annual dance show: Social-dis-dance. Taking the current two metre guidelines as the creative inspiration for movement, the show explored the movement potential of social distancing in a performance that featured 50 dancers from all year groups.

In Golf, students across the year groups took part in the annual Curtis Cup. Congratulations to Freddie who took home the trophy.

In Hockey, Kitty Chapple has been selected for the GB Elite Development programme, it serves as a feeder into the central, senior programme and includes players from all of the GB home nations including Scotland, Wales and England U23s.

Year 9 House Hockey got the students into the Christmas spirit with teams dressing in fancy dress. The competition was divided into two pools, with the top team of each group progressing to the final. The competition was played in an excellent spirit by all and demonstrated the progress that the girls had made throughout the term.

OMs Emily Price and Mimi Rhodes have been selected for the GB&I Vagliano and Curtis Cup squads for 2021.

In Karate, Year 10 Jamie Mackelden, Year 11 Harry Rowland and Lower Sixth Lucy Nowicki and Anna Crowe successfully passed their grading for their orange belts. Year 11 Rachel Hughes successfully passed her grading for her brown belt with two stripes, she is now two gradings away from obtaining her black belt.

In Netball, seven netballers trailed for Somerset netball.

Rugby hosted an internal rugby kicking competition, four weeks of lunchtime competitions saw 39 students across all year groups take part.

Year 9 House Rugby ended a busy term for the Year 9 rugby players. The coaches have commended their outstanding commitment to the Monday morning rugby games session, working hard on improving the students handling, decision making and contact skills. During the last session they held a Millfield Super Bowl.

In three Upper Sixth Millfield swimmers and two recent leavers have been chosen for the Swim England National Junior Squad for the 2020-21 season. Upper Sixth students Joseph Deighan (1500m Freestyle), William Ellington (200m Breaststroke) and Tatiana Tostevin (100m Backstroke) have been named as some of the most promising English athletes of the future. Recent leavers William Mitchell (100m Breaststroke) and Rachel Anderson (400m Freestyle), who now attend Loughborough University, have also been selected. Both Will and Rachel currently swim in the Loughborough performance groups, targeting the Olympic trials in April. Millfield Swimming Coach Rachel Aldington has also been selected as part of the coaching team, where she will be working with the distance freestyle group. Read more here.
