Sport Round Up - June 2023

In Athletics, over 60 Millfield athletes from Year 9 to Upper Sixth competed at the Somerset Schools Championships on Saturday 10 June, with many achieving personal bests and gaining selection to the Somerset Schools team for the South West Championships.

40 students were selected to represent Somerset Schools at the South West Schools Championships in Exeter on Saturday 17 June. A strong showing from the team saw several English Schools’ standards and Podium finishes achieved.

At the England U20 Championships in Chelmsford, Upper Sixth Lucy Fellows claimed gold in the U20 Women’s Long Jump, Noah Miller was fourth in the U20 Men’s 400m Hurdles, Lower Sixth Lily Martin was fourth in the U20 Women’s Discus and Lucy Wintle was second in the U18 400m Hurdles.

At the Welsh Senior Championships in Cardiff, Upper Sixth Lucy Fellows claimed Gold in Long Jump with a leap of 6.34m, achieving European Junior qualification standard. After Lucy won the England U20 Championships and has now achieved the standard, she will be selected to represent Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in Jerusalem from 7-9 August.

Millfield students competed at the South West Schools Combined Events Championships from Saturday 24 - Sunday 25 June in Yeovil. There were some fantastic results with all of the following claiming personal bests in their events. Lower Sixth Mayalee Osola won gold in the Senior Girl’s Heptathlon. Lower Sixth Kizzi Reed claimed a silver in the Senior Girl’s Heptathlon. Year 11 Stefan Chirita took home a silver medal in the Intermediate Boy’s Octathlon. Year 10 Zoe Allen was seventh in the Intermediate Girl’s Heptathlon. Year 9 Tabitha Olivier won a silver medal in the Junior Girl’s Pentathlon, while Mimi Woodliffe was 13th.

Millfield athletes have been selected to represent Somerset Schools’ at the English Schools’ Championships at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham from Friday 30 June to Saturday 1 July.

The students selected as follows: Upper Sixth Ella Wintle, Lucy Fellows, Noah Miller and Toks Akanbi-Mortimer. Lower Sixth Alice Wilson, Bellsie Honey, Eliza Olinma, Lily Martin, Lucy Wintle, Mayalee Osola and  Tamara Jackson. Year 11 Amalia Eneanya-Bonito, Year 10 Gemma Tolputt and Tom Webb. Year 9 Harry Wilson, Ini Asuquo, Jemima Davey, Joe Reid, Lily Jones and Teddy Woodbridge.

In Cricket, the Boy’s U14As competed against Kings College on Tuesday 27 June in the County U14 Final.

The Girl’s 1st XI beat Epsom College in the National quarter finals to secure a place in the National Finals Day at Shrewsbury School on the 28 June. 

Year 11 Lilly Hawkins scored her maiden Somerset Women’s 50+ score against Wales, helping her team to a fantastic victory. 

Lower Sixth Scarlett Hale became the world’s youngest ever International Umpire in Rwanda recently during the Kwibuka Women’s T20 tournament, featuring the home nation, Botswana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, UAE, Nigeria and Cameroon. Scarlett umpired eight matches and was third umpire in other matches too. Scarlett was selected to umpire the Competition Final between Rwanda and Uganda.

In Equestrian, students competed in the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) show jumping qualifier at Rectory Farm on 11 June. The 80cm team of Year 10 Emily Shaw, Diana Bulyndenko, Mariella Frost and Year 9 Agatha Stamper placed second and have qualified for the National Championships in October.

The 90cm team of Year 10 Emily Shaw, Year 9 Agatha Stamper, Sarah Box and Bella Steer-Love placed second and have qualified for the National Championships in October. Agatha also placed second individually.

The 1m team of Year 11 Sienna Franklyn Miller, Mathilda Brooks-Francis and Year 9 Bella Steer-Love placed second and have qualified for the Hickstead Elite Championships in August.

Year 9 Isla Sully has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2023 Junior European Dressage Championships in Germany in July.

At the British Eventing Nunney International Horse Trials, Year 11 Harriet Blair was second in the Open Novice U18 event, while Lower Sixth Evie Lewis was fourth in the BE100 U18 event.

At the NSEA One Day Event at Moreton, Year 10 Emily Shaw was first while Mariella Frost was sixth in the 70cm qualifying for the championships in October.

In Fencing, four Millfield fencers competed at the Exeter Senior Open. Lower Sixth Maisie Everett was 5th in the Women’s Epee, Haleena Callaghan was 6th and Year 10 Evie Coyler was 15th. Evie finished 2nd in the Women’s Foil. In the Men’s Sabre, Lower Sixth Oliver Coombe was 11th, Year 10 Kaden Woname was 18th and Anton Sidorov was 22nd.

In the England Youth Championships, Year 10 Oliver Tomlinson was 33rd, Year 9 Harry Gulliver was 41st and Bertie Weston was 49th in the U15 Boy’s Epee.

Year 10 Anton Sidorov was 25th in the U15 Boy’s Sabre.

Year 9 Dora Ji was 8th in the U15 Girl’s Epee. In the U15 Girl’s Sabre, Year 9 Victoria Baughan was 12th and Year 10 Tamara Gomez Velasco was 18th.

In Golf, Upper Sixth Freddie Turnell was the joint winner of The Berkshire Trophy, a prestigious 72-hole event. Freddie Turnell scored -16 after scores of 67, 68, 67 and 69. Freddie has also verbally committed to attend the University of Central Arkansas in Fall 2024.

Upper Sixth Harriet Lockley is one of six players to be selected to represent Wales Ladies in the Women’s European Team Championships at Tawast Golf Club, Finland, in July.

Year 10 Abbie Moore finished joint fifth in the Somerset Girl’s Championship at Worlebury and returned the best score in the morning of the 36 hole event.

Year 11 Lowen Stephens represented Somerset U18s in the match v Gloucestershire U18s.

Year 10 Luke Burbridge and Wills House represented Somerset U16s in a match against Gloucestershire U16s.

In Hockey, Year 10 Lilly May Holmes has been selected for England U16s for the 8 Nations in July.

In Karate, having been fast tracked through the brown belt system over the duration of the last 12 months, Upper Sixth Harrison Pierce successfully graded for his black belt (1st Dan) on 10 June. This included four hours of mandatory training and concluded in a two-hour grading on the same day. Grading alongside Harrison was Lower Sixth Jamie Mackelden who successfully graded for his brown belt (1st kyu). Jamie will now move towards grading for his black belt next year.

On 17 June, Year 10 Emma Martin, Sophia Leung and Christina Zhang successfully graded for their green belts. They will now progress onto the purple syllabus which will mark the halfway point to black belt.

In Modern Pentathlon, on 3 June the Millfield Modern Pentathlon Team attended the National Triathle which was also a qualifying event for the World Championships being held in Bali in November. In the U15 Boys, Year 9 Charles Robinson was 10th. In the U17 Boys, Year 10 Oliver Tomlinson was 6th, qualifying him as a reserve for the World Championships. In the U19 Girls, Year 11 Bea Kinnear was 4th, qualifying her for the World Championships. In the U19 boys, Lower Sixth Gerard McGrady was 6th, and is qualified for the Championships in Bali later this year.

Millfield also attended the National Schools Biathle, held at Leweston school on 18 June. Lower Sixth Lily Chorley and Gerard McGrady took part in the Years 12/13 Boys and Girls events respectively, with Gerard finishing 2nd. Year 11 Stefan Chirita was 1st in the Year 11 boys, with Year 10 Leah Mooney was 1st in the Year 11 Girls event. Year 10 Alba Escobar Barfoot was 1st in the Year 11 Girls event. In the Year 9 Girls competition, Year 9 Lexi Taylor finished in 2nd place.

Lower Sixth Gerard McGrady, Year 11 Zac Cooper and Year 10 Tom Webb travelled to Erding, Germany to compete in the Biathle and Triathle European Championships.

In Rugby, Lower Sixth Maddy Gissing has been accepted into the National Ultimate Rugby Sevens programme.

In Swimming, nine of the Millfield Swimming community will be on international duty this summer.

Matthew Richards, Emily Large and Coach Livingstone will take part in the World Aquatics Championships in Japan.

Upper Sixth Solomon Williams, Lower Sixth Evie Dilley and Adam Graham will compete at the European Junior Championships in Serbia.

Upper Sixth Solomon Williams (Wales) Year 10 Sophie Davies (Wales), Lower Sixth Adam Graham (England), Evie Dilley (England), Year 10 Ethan Stubbs-Green (Antigua) and Coach Aldington (England) will compete at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

Lower Sixth Rhys Insley, Pippa Charleson and Year 10 Erin Pritchard represented Bermuda at the Bahamas National Championships in June.

Throughout July and August Millfield Swimming will have over 50 students competing in the British Summer Championships and the English Summer Championships.

In Sailing, the Millfield team were in training for the Eton Thames Valley Team Racing Event, which was held at Queen Mother Sailing Club, Datchet. The team finished 6th out of 16 schools.

In Squash, Year 9 Shunsaku Kariyazono has been selected to represent Japan in the 2023 Asian Games in August. Shun will represent the U17 team despite being only 14 at the time of selection.

Lower Sixth Amelie Haworth will compete in the individual and team events at the U19 World Championships in Melbourne, Australia from 18-29 July.

In Triathlon, Year 10 Erin Pritchard has been selected to compete in the Commonwealth Youth Games this summer.
