Sport Round Up - March 2022

In athletics, the pole vault group travelled to Cardiff to take part in their first ever pole vault competition. Year 11 Luidji Louis-Hansen and Year 10 Oscar Webb showed off their hard work by both clearing 2.51m in their first competition. Year 10 Carlotta Muller battled through an opening height scare to record a clearance of 2.31, while Lower Sixth Sabrina Jones, also taking part in her first competition, managed to break the 2m barrier with a 2.01m clearance. 

In cricket, Year 10 Lilly Hawkins and Year 11 Scarlett Hale went on tour with Somerset CCC Women and Girls in Sri Lanka. 

In netball, the girls U19 team won the Independent School Netball Final, defeating Guildford High School in the finals. The U15 team were runners up in the same competition.

Millfield girls Netball U19 team finished as second in the country in the England Netball National Schools Final, losing narrowly to the Blue Coat School. 

The U14’s girls netball team finished in the top 12 in the country at the England Netball National Schools Competition. 

In fencing, OM Jacob Mitchell won a silver medal in the European Championships U20 team event. 

OM’s Hal Jones and Jacob Mitchell have been selected for the U20 England fencing squad for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. 

The Millfield Fencing team were crowned Overall Public School Champions for the ninth year in succession at the Public School Fencing Championships, which were held at Lee Valley, London. Read the full story here.

Lower Sixth Alex Cupper was crowned Senior Boys Foil Champion, with Upper Sixth Ben Huckle finishing eighth, Peri Newman was 69th and Lower Sixth Seth Hedgecock 42nd. 

Ben Huckle was Senior Boys Master at Arms. 

In the Senior Girls Foil, Upper Sixth Elena Launder was 11th, Vivien Taylor was 16th, Gabby Bolt was 23rd, while Lower Sixth Lauren Tang was 14th and Renee Nassozi Kiggundu was 29th. 

In the Junior Boys Foil, Lower Sixth Umar Badroel Rizwan was second, while Year 10 Ben Turner was ninth, Year 11 Arseniy Orekhov was 26th, Year 10 Charlie Weston was 31st, Aleksey Ageyev Jr was 41st, Year 11 Isaac Searle was 44th, Year 10 Stefan Chirita was 78th and Zac Cooper was 89th. 

In the Junior Girls Foil, Year 11 Maisie Everett was 11th, Haleena Callaghan was 23rd, Year 10 Zoe Holloway was 42nd, Bea Kinnear was 44th and Francesca Woollard was 45th. 

In the Mount Haes Boys Foil, Year 9 Andéol Drion was 14th, Kaden Woname was 26th and Oliver Tomlinson was 32nd. 

In the Mount Haes Girls Foil, Year 9 Evie Colyer was sixth, Ava Cooke was 27th, Angela Shopova was 42nd and Maisie Searle was 46th. 

In the Senior Boys Epee, Lower Sixth Alex Cupper was third, Upper Sixth Ben Huckle was 22nd, Peri Newman was 26th and Lower Sixth Seth Hedgcock was 73rd. 

In the Senior Girls Epee, Upper Sixth Vivien Taylor was sixth, Abbie Freeman was seventh, 8th Kelsey Woname was eighth, Olivia Mahony was ninth, Elena Launder was 14th, Lower Sixth Renee Nassozi Kiggundu was 18th, Lauren Tang was 27th and Upper Sixth Gabby Bolt was 38th. 

In the Junior Boys Epee, Year 11 Patrick Jackson was sixth, Jamie Mackelden was 26th, Stefan Chirita was 33rd, Upper Sixth Umar Badroel Rizwan was 36th, Year 10 Harrison Cox was 64th, Charlie Weston was 86th, Zac Cooper was 92nd, Aleksey Ageyev Jr was 97th and Year 11 Iggy De Alvaro was 110th. 

In the Junior Girls Eppe, Year 11 Maisie Everett was fifth, Haleena Callaghan was 15th, Year 10 Maya Corbin was 19th, Zoe Holloway was 22nd, Francesca Woollard was 31st, Bea Kinnear was 36th, while Bianca Gomez Velasco was 42nd. 

In the Mount Haes Boys Epee, Year 9 Andéol Drion was 17th, while Oliver Tomlinson was 51st. 

In the Mount Haes Girls Epee, Year 9 Steffi De La O was sixth, Evie Colyer was 17th, Maisie Searle was 18th, Ava Cooke was 23rd, while Angela Shopova was 45th. 

In the Senior Boys Sabre, Upper Sixth Ben Huckle was 11th, Seth Hedgcock was 46th, Peri Newman was 57th, while Lower Sixth Alex Cupper was 58th. 

In the Senior Girls Sabre, Lower Sixth Lauren Tang was seventh, Renee Nassozi Kiggundu was eighth, Upper Sixth Elena Launder was ninth, while Vivien Taylor was 22nd. 

In the Junior Boys Sabre, Year 11 Isaac Searle was ninth, Oliver Coombe was 18th, Ben Turner was 39th, Year 10 Stefan Chirita was 45th, Aleksey Ageyev was 52nd, Zac Cooper was 61st, Charlie Weston was 72nd, while Jamie Hague was 75th. 

Junior Girls Sabre – Year 11 Maisie Everett was tenth, Year 10 Bianca Gomez Velasco was 11th, Francesca Woolard was 13th, Zoe Holloway was 14th, Bea Kinnear was 17th, while Maya Corbin was 19th. 

In the Mount Haes Boys Sabre, Year 9 Andéol Drion was third, Kaden Woname was seventh, while Oliver Tomlinson was 31st. 

In the Mount Haes Girls Sabre, Year 9 Evie Colyer was joint third with Maisie Searle Y9, while Ava Cooke was 15th and Angela Shopova was 17th. 

Year 9 Evie Colyer was crowned Mount Haes Girls Champion at Arms. 

Lower Sixth Umar Badroel Rizwan claimed a bronze medal in the U17 Foil team event at The Asian Cadet and Junior championships 2022, while Lauren Tang was tenth in the U20 category and sixteenth in the U17 Foil. 

Year 9 Kaden Woname represented Ghana in the 2022 African Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships, coming second in the U15 boys sabre category and sixth in the U17 Cadet Championship. 

Upper Sixth Kelsey Woname capatined the Ghanaian team at the 2022 African Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships, finishing eighth in the U20 category. 

Lower Sixth Renee Nassozi Kiggundu represented Uganda at the 2022 African Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships, finishing fifth in the U17 category. 

In ski racing, Year 10 Katie Saunders became the U16 overall female champion at the English Alpine Championships in Bormio, Italy. Read the full story here

Millfield skiing champion on slopes with trophy

OM James Whitley finished sixth in the men’s standing giant slalom in the Beijing Winter Paralympics. 

In rugby, Upper Sixth Lia Green and Poppy Whittingham became South West Regional Champions, representing Winscombe Warriors U18s, the day after representing the school at football in the girls’ senior ISFA Cup semi-finals.  

Lower Sixth Ioan Emmanuel was selected in the Wales Under 18’s training squad for their game against England, where he played against fellow Millfield student Upper Sixth Sam Harris. 41 Millfield students travelled to watch the inspirational fixture held at Taunton Rugby Club. 

After three years, Millfield Rugby returned to Rosslyn Park 7s, with 72 students taking part. The Millfield girls 7s teamed made a historic debut at the tournament, and finished as runners-up in the plate competition. The boys first VII finished as runners-up in the overall cup final.

In clay shooting, the Millfield boys first team, consisting of Upper Sixth Boris Findlay, Thomas Rogan, Lower Sixth Patrick Salisbury, Ivor Fothergill and Kaikai Fan were first at the Sherborne A competition, with the Millfield boys B team also coming first in the Sherborne B event. The boys A team claimed third place at the very competitive Holland and Holland event. 

Millfield travelled to the Harrow Fido Cup, and claimed first, third and fifth places in the event, with Lower Sixth Patrick Salisbury being the High Gun. 

Upper Sixth Boris Findlay was the High Gun as Millfield claimed first place at The Schools Challenge event and did likewise in the Cheltenham 1st competition. 

The Millfield Ladies team placed first in the Cheltenham Ladies competition. 

In football, Millfield boys U14s and the Senior boys second team have made it through to the County Cup Final. 

The senior girls first team reached the semi-finals of the ISFA Cup, losing out in a close match to Rossall School.

In tennis, competing against older and highly experienced opposition, the boys first team of Upper Sixth Tim Jarvis, Lower Sixth Calum Jessett, James Champion, Ralph Bartlett, Fin Edwards, Year 11 Devon Dominguez and William Thomas progressed through the Men’s National Premier League Doubles event to reach the national playoffs in Loughborough. Here, Lower Sixth Tim Jarvis teamed up with Mr Manlow, but lost to a strong pair from the University of Stirling in a close match in the final round. 

Year 9 Charlie Ruffell won five out of five matches to claim the title in the Senior Progress Tour event held at Cardiff Metropolitan University.   

13 Millfield students represented their respective counties at the inaugural U18 Junior County Championships event.   

Representing Somerset were Lower Sixth Callum Jessett, James Champion, Fin Edwards, Francesca Davis, Year 10 Charli Beeson, Year 9 Niamh McLoughlin and Charlie Ruffell.   

Representing Dorset was Upper Sixth Tim Jarvis and Lower Sixth James Sclater.  

Upper Sixth Indie Lucas represented South of Scotland, Lower Sixth Ralph Bartlett represented Essex, Lina Teleshun represented Middlesex and Year 11 Sarah Long represented the Isle of Man.  

 In the U14 National Clay Court Championships, Year 9 Charlie Ruffell came in fifth place, with Hugo Dunn ninth and Joshua Craze 11th. The event was held at Sutton Tennis Academy, where Year 10 Simon Hegarty and Year 11 Devon Dominguez travelled to for a Senior Progress Tour Event, finishing second and third respectively.

Lower Sixth Callum Jessett and Fin Edwards travelled to Edgbaston for the £5,000 Men’s Progress Tour. Fin lost out in qualifying but bounced back well to win his next two matches, while Callum made it to the last 16 of the main draw, and was the youngest player to reach that stage.  

Lower Sixth Francesca Davis reached the semi-finals of the Bath British Tour Women’s event, taking her into the top 50 in the UK women’s senior rankings.

Year 9 Rafe Samuel was the champion at the U16 Winter Regional Tour in Swindon. 

In equestrian, congratulations to OM Freddy Tett who has been announced as France’s Champion Amateur Jockey for 2021. 

At the Eventers Challenge in Moreton, Year 10 Fleur Kingsford and Dotti formed part of a team that won the 90cms and 1m, qualifying for the NSEA Eventers Challenge Championships at Hickstead in May.  

The 90cms team of Year 10 Harriet Blair and Smartie, Josh Sully and Lala, Rupert Hyde and May and Fleur Kingsford and Dotti have qualified for the NSEA Eventers Challenge Championships at Hickstead in May. 

Millfield attended the NSEA Showjumping Competition at Pontispool, coming away with 2 wins. 

Year 9 Bronwyn McMenamin and Rosie, were part of the victorious 70cms team, made up of Senior and Prep School riders. 

Lower Sixth Bryany Smith riding Kally, Year 10 Harriet Blair riding Smartie and Sienna Franklyn-Miller riding Lady were all part of the victorious 90cms team. 

These riders have qualified for the NSEA Championships at Keysoe in October. 

Millfield polo players had their first match of the year at home, Vaux Park polo club. Year 10 Lily Mazzotti, Carlotta Hauck and Year 9 Nurain Said all performed well despite a 6-4 loss to Sherborne. 

In squash, the KS5 girls team were crowned National Champions at the 2022 National Schools Squash Championships. Congratulations to the team of Upper Sixth Lily Thomas (captain), Eva Ford Year 11 Amelie Haworth, Year 10 Soha Khatri, Alice McIntyre Newton and Year 8 René Mattinson.

The KS3 boys team finished fifth in their category. The team included Year 9 Harry Deering, Cai Lewis and Kai Kiernan.  

In the Competition Surrey Gold, Year 11 Amelie Haworth finished fourth in the U19 girls category, while Ayaan Vaziralli was 17th in the U17 boys event.

Lower Sixth student Jasmine Caley finished second in the U19 girls category, while Upper Sixth Juliette Janne D’Othee took the bronze. 

Year 11 Gerard McGrady was U16 boys British individual Champion.

In the U15 girls category, Year 10 Bianca Gomez-Velasco placed second. 

Year 9 Dexter Townsend was British Biathlon individual champion in the U14 boys event, while Tom Webb claimed the silver medal. 

Year 9 Annabelle Suffield finished in the bronze medal position in the U14 girls event. 

In sailing, Year 9 Maia Delin placed 3rd in the U16 girls at the UKLA Marine and Ovington Spring Qualifiers and Weymouth. 

In swimming, the Millfield team travelled to Cardiff for the Premier Final of the National Swimming League. A fantastic display across 42 events saw Millfield place second overall, with Mount Kelly Swimming gaining top spot. 

Congratulations to the following students who won their events on the day: Upper Sixth Tamryn Van Selm, Evan Jones and Lower Sixth Elliot Woodburn and Elena Pedersen in the Open 4x50m mixed medley; Lower Sixth Conor Cherrington, Elena Pedersen, Year 11 Nicole De Pree and Year 9 Sophie Davies in the U16 4x50m mixed free relay; Upper Sixth Evan Jones in the Open 100m butterfly; Year 11 Zahra Davies in the U16 girls butterfly; Year 11 Leo Ferguson in the U16 boys butterfly; Year 9 Reuben Alty, Katherine Bolton, Joshua Ulyatt and Megs Higgs in the U14 4x50m mixed relay; Lower Sixth Conor Cherrington, Year 11 Lucy Buckingham, Nicole De Pree and Year 10 Lauchlan Parrott in the U16 mixed medley relay.  

A special mention to Lower Sixth Conor Cherrington who came away with the top boy award in the 16 and under category. 

On the weekend of 26-27 March Millfield hosted a last chance regional qualifier meet, with many students showing outstanding drops in time. An amazing 56 students took part; well done to all involved. 

Upper Sixth student Wyatt Walsh will be joining the Class of '26 at Quincy University, Illinois. Wyatt has secured both a swimming and academic scholarship. 

In outdoor adventure, students completed their DofE Gold practice expedition in Brecon Beacons. 

Students from Years 9 and 10 prepared for the Ten Tors event with a series of training expeditions taking place in the Mendips, Exmoor and Dartmoor. So far the students have completed a total of 75 miles in preparation for the 35-mile event on Dartmoor in May where they will take on the challenge alongside over 2000 youngsters in teams of six from the South West and further afield.

In Karate, students achieved the following belts at their recent grading: 

Year 11 Jamie Mackelden achieved a purple belt, while Lower Sixth Harrison Pierce and Eleanor Davies achieved green belts. Lower Sixth Maddy Barton, Year 11 Luidji Louis-Hansen, Daria Zimina, Year 10 Alex Jones and Year 10 Alexander Hutchcroft all achieved orange belts. 

In triathlon, Year 9s Dexter Townsend and Macey Burge were champions at the Bath Duathlon, while Lower Sixth Daisy was third. 

In hockey, OMs Vicki McCabe, Becky Manton and Kitty Chapple have been selected for next month's Junior World Cup in South Africa. 

The girls U16 hockey team were runners up in the England Hockey Tier 1 National Finals, held at Lee Valley. 

The girls hockey first XI finished 3rd at the England Hockey Tier 1 National Finals, held at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. 

The boys U16 team reached the Quarter Final in the England Hockey Tier 1 National Schools competition. 

The girls U14 team came fourth in the England Hockey Tier 1 National Schools competition. 

In golf, Upper Sixth student Dewi John represented Wales U18s in their match against Ireland U18, and has committed to join the Class of '26 at Southern Charleston University, South Carolina on a golf and academic scholarshi️p. 

Upper Sixth Gracie Mayo won the Somerset Schools Girls Championship at Weston, scoring a three-under-par 69. Lower Sixth Harriet Lockley was runner-up with a level par 73. Lower Sixth Freddie Turnell became the Somerset Schools Boys Champion, shooting a credible score of 1 under par, 69 at Weston. The team of Freddie, Harriet and Gracie were the Team Gross Somerset Schools Champions. Freddie has been selected for the Somerset Men's County Team, and has begun training with the England South West U18 squad.

Upper Sixth Gracie Mayo and Lower Sixth Harriet Lockley competed in the Spanish Ladies Open, and have both been selected to represent Wales in the forthcoming European Nations Cup at Real Club de Sotogrande, Spain from the 30 March - 2 April. 

In trampolining, two students attended the National Schools Trampoline Championships in Macclesfield on the 18 March. Year 10 Ellis James placed third in the Year 10-14 Elite Boys competition, while Emery Taylor finished sixth in the Year 10 - 14 Novice boys competition. Both boys bounced extremely well on the day, performing two ten-bounce routines in front of a judging panel.
