Sport Round Up - May 2021

In Athletics, all houses took part in the annual house athletics competition, including events in javelin, high jump, long jump, discus, shotput and sprints. A special award was launched this year in fond memory of the former Director of Athletics, Alan Lerwill. Read more here.

In Athletics, Lower Sixth Harry Barton placed second in the 110 metre hurdles at the Loughborough Internationals, finishing second in a new personal best time of 14.45.

Millfield Athletics displayed some excellent performances in Millfield’s internal and external competitions this month.

The first competition saw Lower Sixth Lucy Chalmers run a 400 metre hurdles time of 61.5. Lower Sixth Harry Barton moved to the top of the UK under 20 rankings in the 110 metre hurdles with a new personal best of 14.49 seconds. Upper Sixth Max Nicolle ran his first 2000 metre steeplechase in Yeovil and ran a personal best of 6.18 minutes leaving him third in the UK rankings. Upper Sixth Will Aitkin ran a solo 1500m race to win in 4.08, an outstanding effort in terrible weather. Year 10 Iris Courtney ran a superb 5.05 in the 1500m.

On Saturday 15 May, the middle-distance events stole the show with Upper Sixth Max Nicolle and Will Aitken running an 800 and 1500m double. The girls group showed quality in this area with Year 10 Iris Courtney running an excellent run of 5.00.2. The 800m was again a super competitive race with Lower Sixth Eva Holland pipping Upper Sixth Pia Lewis to the post in 2.22.7 to 2.23 mins.

On Saturday 22 May, Millfield competed in its first competitive Athletics match in over two years. Nine schools attended and the event saw some high-level performances from all athletes. Millfield took the overall win with Senior Girls, U17 & U16 Boys winning their events and the Senior boys finishing joint first.

Lower Sixth Matt Bailey ran a new personal best of 10.8 seconds in the 100m to break the 11 second mark for the first time ever as well as winning the senior boys 110m hurdles in 14.6 seconds. Lower Sixth Keira Gilman won the Senior girls 100m and Year 9 Kayo Adeniji won the Junior boys 100m in 12.1 seconds. Upper Sixth Holly Lawrence produced a swift run in the 80m hurdles winning by over a second in 11.8 seconds while Year 9 Charlie Tuthill took on the event for the first time and won in 13.2 seconds.

In the senior girls shot put it was a Millfield top three with Upper Sixth Jamie Holland taking the win in 11.20m with Year 11 Lucy Fellows behind with a personal best followed by Year 11 Maya Kendell in third. Lower Sixth Amirah Weightman-Dauda jumped 1.63m to win the girls high jump to continue her strong start to the season.

Millfield’s team spirit was personified by Lower Sixth Kai Snell this weekend as she stepped in to run the 400m after a withdrawal and came home in third place. The relay teams also won all races that they entered.

In Clay Shooting, after a long-awaited return to competitive shooting, the Millfield squads have won both their fixtures during May, the first competitions since Autumn. A team of five won at Abbey Ling’s shooting ground against Taunton, despite the weather, with Year 11 James Hoddinott taking the competition High Gun. A team of four won at Ian Coley Sporting against Cheltenham College at their home ground, on this occasion, High Gun was won by Lower Sixth Boris Findlay.

In Cricket, former-England spinner Peter Such coached some of our upcoming cricketers. Peter held one-to-one sessions with our cricket students whilst establishing Millfield’s relationship with The Spin Academy. Watch more here.

In Duke of Edinburgh, 31 Lower Sixth students braved the elements last week on their Gold DofE practice expedition to Dartmoor. The groups camped next to Whiteworks on the moor near Princetown and awoke to some of the wettest and windiest weather ever for a DofE Expedition. Everyone performed brilliantly despite the poor conditions, they are all now well prepared for the toughest conditions and ready to undertake the qualifying expedition at the end of June.

In Equestrian, Lower Sixth Sofia Scriven competed in the grand prix final on Saturday jumping brilliantly to come a very respectable 19th in a large class

In Girls Football, Upper Sixth Millie Quaintance has been accepted to study Sports science as an elite athlete in football and javelin at Loughborough University. Read more here.

In Girls Football, Millfield U18 team came second in the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) 7’s competition and the U15 side reached the semi-finals.

In Hockey, 1st XI keeper Lottie has been selected into the England U18 Squad.

In Swimming, the Millfield community was represented at the European Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Current student, Lower Sixth, Tamryn van Selm achieved her first European medal, winning gold in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay. Read more here.

OMs James Guy, Brodie Williams and Kieran Bird competed for Great Britain and Max McCusker for Ireland at the championships. GB finished top of the medal table and it was the most successful championships in history. James Guy contributed to the medal earning with six to his name (three gold, two silver and one bronze).
