In Athletics, Lower Sixth students Mayalee Osola and Lily Martin have been selected for the England Athletics Youth Talent Programme, while Upper Sixth Lucy Fellows has selected for the Junior Talent Programme. Read the full story here. 

In Cross Country, a Millfield Mixed Team took part in the ESAA Cup Regionals at Downside School. The Intermediate girls’ team won the regionals in style with an impressive 19pts score. The National Finals are due to take place in Leeds on Saturday 3 December. The results from the day were as follows: Year 10 Gemma Tolputt was 1st, Year 9 Jemima Davey was 2nd, Year 10 Annabelle Suffield was 5th, Macey Burge was 11th, Matilda Cowan was 33rd and Evelyn Wheeler was 45th. 

A Millfield mixed team also took part in round two of the Gwent Cross Country League at Blaise Castle, Bristol. In the U15 boys’ event, Year 10 Tom Webb was first, followed by Cai Lewis, both beating a highly ranked middle-distance athlete. In the girls’ U20 category, Upper Sixth Ruby Barker came 8th with a strong run. In the U17 events, Lower Sixth Jack Harvey finished 8th in the boys, while Mackenzie O’Dea was 16th in the girls. Well done to Upper Sixth Tara Kay for completing her first Millfield race and finishing strong in the U17 girls’ event. 

In Clay Shooting, it has been an excellent term for the shooting squad, who have won each competition entered with a mixture of teams being represented. 

The boys’ first team squad has comprised Upper Sixth Patrick Salisbury (Captain), Ivor Fothergill, Kaikai Fan, Nicholas Titley and Lower Sixth Teddy Hutchison. The girls’ first team squad comprised Upper Sixth Amber Wilson, Molly Rea-Young, Michelle Li, Madeleine Ebbage and Year 10 Matilda Wilkes. 

Some real talent is coming through from the junior years with some excellent individual performances being recorded. Notably, Year 10 Oliver Austin, who won the High Gun trophy at the recent Marlborough competition beating all first team members from all other schools. 

Millfield’s own Invitation competition saw entries from 17 schools across three separate competitions. The Millfield teams won all three competitions with again excellent individual High Gun performances from Upper Sixth Michelle Li on the Ladies Course, Ivor Fothergill on the A team course and Lower Sixth Louis Watson on the B team course.

Millfield host Clay Shooting Championships

In Climbing, climbers from the Prep and Senior schools took part in Round 1 of The South West Schools Bouldering League at “The Mothership” in Bristol on the Saturday 12 October. The senior school members of the team were Upper Sixth Cyla Leonard, Year 11 Elliott Martinez, Reuben Baron and Year 10 Kira Polyanichko. The team will now be competing in the second round of the competition on the 7 December.

In Cricket, Millfield Cricket won the Forty (XL) Club West Region School of the Year award based on their hosting, spirit of cricket, quality of play and the match itself. The Dinner was hosted in the historic Long Room at Lords Cricket Ground. Upper Sixth Shayaan Calcuttawala was presented with the student medal on behalf of Millfield by former MCC President, Johnny Barclay.

Lower Sixth Dominic Kelly has been selected for the England U19 Tour to the UAE which departs on 28 November and returns on the 16 December. Dominic is the youngest member of that squad and is looking to build on his existing haul of U19 International Caps. 

In Equestrian, on Sunday 6 November riders competed at the NSEA Eventers Challenge Competition at Pontispool, hoping to qualify for the Championships in May 2023. Although the 80cms class did not go according to plan, the team managed to qualify in the 90cm class with Lower Sixth Evie Lewis, Year 11 Harriet Blair, Josh Sully and Year 9 India Heffron being placed second.

In the 1m class Evie Lewis, Harriet Blair and India Heffron were placed first, again qualifying for the May Championships at Hickstead. 

On Saturday 12 November, four riders competed at the British Dressage competition at KSEC. In the Novice 39 Lower Sixth Tesla Martin was placed second in her section. Lower Sixth Charlotte Spicer was placed second in her section in both Elementary tests. In the Prelim 15 Lower Sixth Lola Tremlett was placed third in her section.  

On Saturday 19 November, Millfield Equestrian held their first in-house dressage competition of the year. This was well supported, and everyone was immaculately turned out. Well done to Year 9 Mimi Woodliffe for winning the Prelim 12 and Lower Sixth Tesla Martin for winning the Novice 28. 

On Sunday 20 November, Upper Sixth Lily Lingford Taylor and Bella won the 80cm class at Dorset showground. 

In Fencing, many members of the Millfield team took part in the U17 Cadet Nationals. In the U17 girls Foil, Year 10 Evie Colyer finished 45th. In the girls’ Epee, Lower Sixth Haleena Callaghan was eighth, while Maisie Everett was 18th. In the boys’ Epee, Year 9 Hector Jones was 50th, while Year 11 Charlie Weston was 56th.  

At the U20 Junior Nationals, Lower Sixth Haleena Callaghan was 7th and Maisie Everett was 12th in the girls’ Epee. In the boys’ Epee, Lower Sixth Jamie Mackelden was 34th. Lower Sixth Isaac Searle was 20th in the boys’ sabre. 

Upper Sixth Renee Nassozi Kiggundu finished first in the RAF Fencing Senior Open. 

In the Leon Paul Junior Series (LPJS), Year 10 Maisie Searle was 2nd, Tamara Gomez Velasco was 3rd and Angela Shopova was 5th in the Sabre event. 

In the Cadet U17 BRC Manchester Epee, Lower Sixth Haleena Callaghan was 2nd, while Maisie Everett was 9th. 

Year 10 student Evie Colyer won gold in the U15 girls’ Foil at the Leon Paul Junior Series event held in Bath. 

A group of Millfield fencers travelled to compete in the 2022 Cocks Moors Woods Epee Championships in Birmingham, with Year 10 Evie Colyer and Year 9 Dora Ji winning silver medals in the U15 girls’ Epee and U13 girls’ Epee events respectively. 

Lower Sixth Alba Becker Pombo won top female fencer in the mixed event at the Buckland Handicap Mixed Epee, while Year 11 Stefan Chirita won second place overall.  

Lower Sixth students Haleena Callaghan and Maisie Everett were selected to represent the U17 Cadet Epee GB team in events in Belgrade, Budapest, Klagenfurt and Grenoble. Year 10 Evie Colyer was selected to represent the GB U17 Cadet Foil Team in Manchester. Upper Sixth Umar Badroel Rizwan was selected for the Malaysia U20 Foil team in the Eden Cup in London. 

In Football, the Senior boys’ first team won 2-1 away at Forest School in the ISFA Boodles cup, moving into the last 16. They also claimed a 5-1 win in ESFA Super Cup versus Truro, which they backed up with a 2-0 victory over Torquay Academy, and now progress into the knockout stages. The Senior second team won 2-1 in the ESFA National Cup.

Millfield hosted a U18 Bristol City side, and U18 and U16 sides from Exeter. Matches were also played against Plymouth and Exeter academies, with the U14 boys’ team beating Exeter Academy U14s.

The U15 girls’ team are currently preparing to play their first ever ESFA Game at this age group, while the Senior first team have a must win ESFA Super Cup game coming up.

Millfield footballer Nico Cottle had the chance to train with former Manchester United player and captain Antonio Valencia. Nico travelled to Ecuador during half term and spent two weeks with professional club AV25 Club Deportivo after reaching out to one of their players to enquire about the possibility of joining in with their training. OM Anthony Hudson has been taking part in the World Cup in Qatar in his role as Assistant Manager of the USA National Team. 

In Golf, Upper Sixth Harriet Lockley has signed for Alabama University, and travelled to Florida for a Welsh Ladies training camp.

Upper Sixth Josh Izod competed in the Junior European Open in Spain. 

The Millfield HMC Foursomes Team won their first-round match against Exeter and now face Sherborne in the next round. The team included Upper Sixth Freddie Turnell, Josh Izod, Lower Sixth Dylan John, Maddy Beeching, Year 11 William Welsh and Year 10 Zach Banks. 

In Hockey, Upper Sixth Anna Edwards and Lower Sixth Monica Watkins have been selected for the England U18 squad, while Year 10 Lilly May Holmes has been selected for the U16 squad. Read the full story here.

Millfield Hockey players selected for England squads

The girls’ U14A team finished as runners-up in the Tier 1 Regional Finals. 
 
The girls’ U15A team are through to the ISHC quarter-finals after a good performance v Dauntsey’s School. The U15B squad had their first win of the year, defeating Blundell’s School 9-1. 

The girls’ U16 team are through to their England Hockey Regional Competition, which was played on Wednesday 30 November. 
 
The boys’ first XI and U16 team are both through to the England Hockey Tier 1 Regional Last 4 Indoor Tournament on Tuesday 6 Dec.  
 
Upper Sixth Hugh Middleton and Leo Norwood made their National League Club debut this month for Clifton Robinsons Hockey Club. 
 
The girls’ first XI are four games into their England Hockey Tier 1 League, registering wins against Canford School, Clifton College, Stowe School and Marlborough College. 

First team player and Lower Sixth student India Dusanjh Auty has been playing in goal for the fourth team, embodying the Millfield values. 
 
Lower Sixth and girls’ first XI player Charlotte Manton has been selected for the Great Britain Rowing development programme after various assessments this month. 

In Modern Pentathlon, 90 Millfield Senior and Prep athletes attended the Southwest Biathlon, at Bath University on 9 November. For some this was their first biathlon, and they loved it! For others, this was a more competitive experience, with many qualifying for the National School Finals in March 2023. The event was a big Millfield team affair, with great team support, effort and smiles by all.

In the Year 9 boys’ event, Ted Chesworth was 2nd, while Charles Robinson was 5th. 

In the Year 10 boys’ event, Tom Webb was 2nd, Reuben Brindley was 3rd, Oliver Tomlinson was 4th, Cai Lewis was 7th, Henry Guppy was 11th and Jasper Tibbatts was 12th. The team of Tom, Reuben and Oliver were overall team first, while the team of Cai, Henry and Jasper were overall team third. 

In the Year 10 girls’ event, Macey Burge was 1st, Annabelle Suffield was 2nd, Emilia Evans was 5th, Erin Pritchard was 8th and Alba Escobar Barfoot was 10th. The team finished as overall team first. 

In the Year 11 boys’ event, Jamie Bedford was 4th, Stefan Chirita was 5th and Harry Falconer was 6th. The team finished as overall team first. 

In the Year 11 girls’ event, Bea Kinnear was 3rd. 

In the Year 12/13 boys’ event, Lower Sixth Gerard McGrady was 1st. 

In the Year 12/13 girls’ event, Upper Sixth Jasmine Caley was 1st, Ruby Barker was 3rd, Lower Sixth Melissa McCusker was 6th, Upper Sixth Drew Keam was 7th, Lower Sixth Alba Becker Pombo was 8th and Upper Sixth Charlotte Barr was 9th. The team of Jasmine, Ruby and Melissa finished overall team first, while the team of Drew, Alba and Charlotte finished as overall team third. 

In Netball, Lower Sixth Alice Lillie has been selected into the Wales U21 National Academy Squad for the 2022/23 season. 

The U14, U16 and U19 age groups all progressed into the Regional Schools Netball Tournament taking place in January, where the U16s and U19s were crowned champions. The U19 tournament was held here at Millfield for the first time in six years.

The U19A, U19B, U16A and U15A squads have all progressed onto the next round of their cup fixtures, which will take place later in the term. 

Five students have been selected into the U17 Team Bath NPL squad for this season. The selections are Lower Sixth Sope Ilelaboye, Fechi Okafor, Year 11 Cammie Collins, Amalia Eneanya-Bonito and Year 10 Olivia Pitt. 

Upper Sixth Poppy Sawyer has been selected into the Team Bath U18 Player Development Programme.

The Millfield boys’ netball team took part in their first ever competitive match up against Wells Cathedral School, and claimed a win in the process! The team was formed following the all-boys MAP session which Millfield Netball started this year. The boys have trained once a week for eight weeks leading up to this first ever Millfield boys’ netball fixture. There are many exciting matches and sessions coming up, including guest coaches from the Men’s England Netball squad, The Thorns.

Upper Sixth student Ella Honey and Lower Sixth Sarah Long travelled to Gibraltar for the U17 Netball Europe Challenge, representing the Republic of Ireland and the Isle of Man respectively. Both Sarah and Ella put in fantastic performances, with Sarah and the Isle of Man finishing third, while Ella and Ireland claimed a silver medal. They were joined in Gibraltar by Director of Netball, Jenna Adamson, who received her first international umpiring selection for the event. 

The senior first and second teams took part in fixtures up against Galmington Netball Club, while the third team played against Bridgewater College Academy. 

In Rugby, following being given the NextGenXV award for best rugby school in the world, award-winning documentary The Season visited the school to shoot a documentary, covering the rugby programme. 

The boys’ first XV defeated Whitgift School 52-19 in The Schools Championship. 

The Year 11 boys’ team played Whitgift in a nail-biting game, culminating in a hard-fought narrow victory.  

The boys’ U14B team continued their five-week winning streak with their away fixture in South London.  

The U15s were unfortunately knocked out of the National Cup in the third-round vs Canford School.  

The second half of term was kickstarted with a visit from/to Bath University and Loughborough University, which proved a great opportunity for the students to explore alternative pathways into education and rugby. 
 
Upper Sixth Ioan Emanuel was selected for the Wales U18 training camp. 

In Squash, Millfield squash celebrated the brand-new refurbishment of its six courts by hosting Truro School and Wycliffe College for round one of the National Schools Key stage 3 Championships. The Millfield team finished top of their group and are looking forward to the next stages. The KS4 team also progressed through to the next round of the National Schools tournament, topping their group in the first round of matches held at King’s College Taunton.

The KS5 team finished top of their group in Round 1 of the National Schools tournament, defeating King’s College Taunton, Cheltenham College and Peter Symonds College in the process. 

The Millfield squash second team took on Sherborne School at home on Saturday 26 October. It was an incredibly close encounter, with Millfield coming out on top by three matches to two.

The Millfield squash Squad travelled to Wrocław, Poland for the Polish Junior Open, where Lower Sixth Ayaan Vaziralli was boys’ U17 champion.  

 Amelie Haworth competed and won the U19 Warwick Silver championships and was also runner-up in the Ladies English Championships. 

In Swimming, the Millfield swim team travelled to London for the English Schools’ Swimming Association (ESSA) Secondary Schools’ Team Championships, and achieved great results, collecting seven golds, four silvers and one bronze. 

In Table Tennis, the U16 boys’ team were crowned table tennis county champions after beating Taunton School in the finals, while the U19 girls were also crowned county champions. 

In Tennis, the U16 boys' squad have reached the final four of the National Championship for the second consecutive year. They will compete in the National Finals in Bolton on 3-4 December following their win in the South-West Finals on 11 November.

The girls' first team claimed a 3-1 win over the University of Bristol to maintain to go two wins from two in the Women's National Premier League this season.

Year 10 Laila Moledina won the U16 girls' singles at the South-West Tour event in Sherborne on the 8 October. 

Upper Sixth Calum Jessett was runner-up in the mens' singles at the Team Bath Grade 3 event on 9 October. 

Year 9 Sofiia Vashchuk won the U14 girls' singles at the Ivybridge Grade 3 event. 

Upper Sixth Calum Jessett and Fin Edwards won the Men's doubles at the Ivybridge Grade 3 event during half term. 

Lower Sixth Lola Mansfeldt won the womens' singles event at the South-West Tour in Sherborne, while Year 10 Laila Moledina was runner-up. 

Lower Sixth Forbes Hollingsworth won the mens' singles event at the South-West Tour in Sherborne. 

Several students (and members of staff) were selected to represent their counties in the prestigious National Men's/Women’s Winter County Cup events, taking place at various venues around the UK from Friday 25 - Saturday 27 November. The selections included: Upper Sixth Francesca Davis representing Somerset (Women’s Division 2), James Sclater representing Dorset (Men’s Division 4), Calum Jessett representing Somerset (Men’s Division 4), Lower Sixth Sarah Long representing Isle of Man (Women’s Division 6), Year 10 Charlie Ruffell representing Somerset (Men’s Division 4), Joshua Craze representing Somerset (Men’s Division 4), Miss Walker representing Northumberland (Women’s Division 2) and Mr Manlow and Mr Gabb representing Somerset (Men’s Division 4). 

In Triathlon, Year 11 Jamie Bedford and Year 10 Erin Pritchard both competed in the CARIFTA Games from 12-13 November. Jamie got a bronze medal in the 16-21 age group and silver in the mixed team relay, while Erin came second in her age group.
