Sport Round Up - October 2021

In biathlon, Millfield students competed in the 2021 British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships. In the U13 boys individual category, Year 9 Dexter Townsend came first, Tom Webb placed sixth and Oliver Tomlinson came 16th. In the team event they placed first as a trio and were presented their medals by Modern Pentathlon Gold medallists Joe Cheung and Kate French. In the U16 individual category, Year 11 Verner Krynauw placed fifth.

In cross country, all year groups took part in the House Cross Country Relays on 12 October.

Coach Jason Allen took a group to run the Dorset Jurassic Coast for a special countryside experience.

In dance, students have excelled in the latest dance examinations. Congratulations to OMs Holly Taylor and Rebecca Woodcock who both achieved a Merit and Anna Taylor-Payne who achieved a Distinction in the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet Grade 7 exams.

Year 11 Bo Edwards, Upper Sixth Mia Insley and OM Olivia Davies all achieved Distinctions and Upper Sixth Eloise Parton achieved a Merit in the RAD Ballet Grade 8 exams.

Upper Sixth Jo Maddock, Ella Gambold, Year 11 Lola Morland and Abby Hodder achieved Merits and Lower Sixth Daisy Taylor and Year 11 Ilaria De Neiva Konig passed the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) Modern Grade 5 exams.

OM Sophie Holmes and Holly Taylor achieved Distinctions, Upper Sixth Eloise Parton achieved a Merit and OM Erin Kielty passed the ISTD Modern Grade 6 exams.

In equestrian, our riders have enjoyed an action-packed half term which has included: riders meetings, starting an online psychology course, show jumping training, trip to Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), in house competitions, NSEA competition, Bryanston friendly and fitball fun.

In fencing, three Millfield students were selected by British Fencing to represent Great Britain in the U17 European Cadets Circuit. Read more here.

Four Old Millfieldians competed in the British U23 Championships. David placed third, Becci placed seventh, Jake placed 14th and Dylan placed 41st.

Congratulations to OMs Hal Jones and Jacob Mitchell on their selection for the British 20 GB Epee squad. They will both travel to compete in Riga, Latvia.

In football, Millfield won their round three of the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) U18 Cup match, 2-0 at home v Lancing College.

In girls football, U18 & U16 teams won their first English Schools Football Association (ESFA) Round 1 matches this month, with the U16 girls drawing their Round 2 match too.

In golf, Lower Sixth Harriet Lockley represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Junior Vagliano Team v Europe in the Netherlands earlier this month. She has also competed in the Wales Ladies Championship, finishing 10th and is currently training with Wales ladies. She is currently playing in the Faldo Series Final 2021 at Brockett Hall.

Upper Sixth Gracie Mayo placed joint 17th in the Wales Ladies Championship, won the Girls Singles at the HMC at The Berkshire and has been training with Wales ladies. She came joint 9th in the Irish Women’s Championships.

Lower Sixth Freddie Turnell has placed third in the JH Taylor Golf Medal and is currently training with South West England squad.

Gracie Mayo and Lower Sixth Sophie Sharp won the HMC girls team competition.

Freddie Turnell and Upper Sixth Dewi John placed third in the HMC boys team competition.

Old Millfieldian Harry Hall has placed 8th in the US PGA Shriners Childrens Open.

Old Millfieldians Daryl McMahon, David Gregory, Phil White, Nic Elliot, Adam Yates, Giles Legg have won Grafton Morrish.

The official opening of the John Graveney Golf Centre took place on Saturday 9 October. John was a loved member of the Millfield community, having been Chairman of the OM Society, a School Governor, Foundation Trustee, and involved with both cricket and golf at the school.

In netball, Millfield’s Director of Netball, Jenna Adamson, has become only the second coach in England to attain a Level 3 Netball Coaching Qualification alongside holding her A award in officiating. Read more here.

A record number of 11 students have been selected into Somerset County Netball Academy.

Millfield U14 and U16 teams both qualified at the County Tournament for the Regional Schools competition in January. U14s are county champions and U16s are runners up.

Year 11 Sarah Bugeja has been selected into Switzerland Netball U17 long squad for the 2021-22 season.

Old Millfieldian Ella Porter has been selected for Wales U21 for Netball Europe next month.

In racing, Lower Sixth Matthew Rees has won the British Formula 4 title.

In rugby, Millfield have won the 2021 St Joseph’s Rugby Festival, claiming a record 7th title in the process. The squad have been named the most successful team in the tournament’s history. Read more here.

In swimming, a record number of students are on national performance pathways.

Congratulations to Year 8 Asta Maddox and Mila Brooke, Year 9 Eva Lawson, Maia Delin, Megs Higgs, Joshua Ulyatt, Henry Guppy, Oscar Ryland-Day, Oliver Newing, Dexter Townsend, Emilia Evans and Year 10 Annabel Chan, Bianca Gomez Velasco, Francesca Woollard, Natasha De Pree, Sienna Franklyn-Miller, Lauchlan Parrott, Zac Cooper, Adam White, Ewan Pedersen, Toby Jackson, Harrison Cox and Daniel Heath who have been selected onto Swim England’s National Development Camp.

Congratulations to Year 10 Ivan Hart, Year 11 Lucy Buckingham, Zahra Davies, Adam Graham, Nicole De Pree and Lower Sixth Conor Cherrington, Matthew Cairns and Isabella Woollard who will take part in the Swim England National Event Camp.

Upper Sixth students Tamryn van Selm and Evan Jones join Old Millfieldians Brodie Williams, Kieran Bird, Cameron Kurle and James Guy on British Swimming’s World Class Programme for 2021-22.

In tennis, Lower Sixth Ralph Bartlett has won the title at the men’s grade three event in Bath without dropping a set.

Year 9 Hugo Dunn and Joshua Craze competed at the National Age Group Performance (NAGP) Matchplay weekend winning five games out of sixth against strong opposition.
